Explore the most popular trails in Kittatinny Valley State Park with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

Glacial lakes, limestone outcroppings, former railroads, and a small airport are features of Kittatinny Valley State Park. Lake Aeroflex and Gardners Pond form part of the headwaters of the Pequest River and are excellent for fishing and boating. This scenic property is home to a variety of wildlife such as whitetail deer, wild turkey, a variety of songbirds, beaver, muskrats, and squirrels. Hunting, hiking, mountain biking, birding, and horseback riding are popular activities. The four lakes offer fishing, boating, and kayaking opportunities. The Paulinskill Valley Trail and the Sussex Branch Trail are former railroads that have been converted for use as multiple use trails. Both railroads were critical to the development of Sussex County through the late 1800s and early 1900s. The wide cinder surface is ideal for walking, running, mountain biking, and horseback riding. When snow conditions are abundant, these trails provide and excellent opportunity for cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. You might even see a musher and his dogsled team running down the trail!

Trail was very beautiful and a nice hike. The waterfront is stunning with the lily pads. The trail condition was good and there was very little mud.

We saw fish in the lake, they were nice.

It’s not a bad trail, however the bugs were AWFUL. I spent the entire walk swatting them away.

Trail was good for most part except the southern, narrow loop which was blocked by big pool of water and a tree. In addition there are multiple standing water so loads of mosquitoes.

This is an easy trail with OK views. Take note: wear bug spray. It's very buggy and filled with ticks and deer.

Super easy and nice trail to walk. Lake views are good.

Excellent Trail. This trip, about 5 miles, was a bit icy but enjoyable. Hope to do it again in the Spring.

As was stated in an earlier review this is a very popular area for people on bicycles, almost dangerously popular. Loses points for the horse and dog droppings. Also the low flying planes create noise. If you are willing to look past those things it is a decent hike close to the lake. Plenty of parking, almost litter free (only a few discarded water bottles), well marked trails. Could use some more maintenace with the downed trees and erosion. Looks like some clear cutting of trees and brush is happening in one section of the trail. Interpretive signs are a nice touch, but need updating. The trail as shown on the map is good for most skill levels. There are many intersecting paths yet it is easy to stay on course. Would recommend to check it out, although I will not return. Better options nearby.

My map didn’t quite match up. Followed only black trail markers. Bit rocky. Nice elevation changes.

Very scenic, easy walk/hike. Paths are well marked. I went at about 9:30am on a Sunday morning and saw 5 mountain bikes and 1 other hiker. The paths aren’t wide enough for both so I had to step off the path frequently. Not a big deal, but worth keeping in mind if you’re going with kids. I didn’t notice too much poison ivy, but definitely be careful. I also saw a lot of horse droppings, right in the middle of the paths. Again, not a big deal, but not the best experience.

Started on the easy white dot trail. Found a black dot on the way. Great hike. Over some hills.. through bushes. Nothing too difficult - but the right amount of spice.

Nice easy hike, lots of greenery and ends at a park/beach.
