Explore the most popular nature trips trails in West Rattlesnake Natural Area with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

It's the shortest trail to the summit of West Rattlesnake but it is really steep with some scrambles. I didn't had much time so I took this route to catch the sunset over the squam lakes.

I underestimated the trail and brought barely a quarter of a 16.9 ounce water and ran out when I got about 80% to the summit. The hike down was much easier so I didn't needed any water.

The views from the summit of West Rattlensnake was absolutely memorable so it was totally worth the quick hike. This was my second hike to the summit of this mountain this year.

Great little hike, steep! It does connect to other trails, recommend taking ridge trail on your way back over to west rattlesnake summit, the view is even more incredible there!!

Incredible view!

Great family friendly hike. Easy enough but a decent workout. My dog loved it too. Beautiful views of Squam Lake at the top.

Short hike with a big reward of a view.

lots of folks with dogs, noisy on top headed over to east rattlesnake a great day go breeze

Nice well maintained trails. We took old bridal path to Col trail and made a loop after reaching the peak of west rattle snake. We did a lot of down hill climbing on Col trail before ascending up. A relatively easy trail. We had a four yr old w us who did just great.

Moderately busy at height of the season but worth the short climb for the view.

Great trail. Well maintained. Hike is good for kids and dogs (there were many dogs the day we went).
View is great at the top.
Parking was tricky we had to park on the road (be sure not to be over the white line if you’re on the road because we saw people getting ticketed).

Every place marked No Parking. We had to turn around and leave. :-(

Amazing view awarded after a relatively easy hiking under 40 minutes. Perfect for young kids and dogs. The view at the top is unobstructed and there is plenty room to roam around and take a rest. The trail can get muddy at places (we went after a few days on rain) but it doesn't get slippery. Highly recommended.

Nice, easy trail. Great for kids. Great views!

I've combined the Old Bridle Path with the Ridge Trail to East Rattlesnake to make a nice half day hike. The panoramic view from West Rattlesnake mtn in particular was absolutely breathtaking. I had a nice pair of binoculars with me so I was able to really see all over the Squam Lake. The water was so clear, blue and pristine it was out of this world.

The surrounding mountain range of Mount Webster, Mount Morgan, Mount Percival was spectacular as well. The view from East Rattlesnake is not as good as from the west side but still worth the trip especially when the trail is just moderately difficult. The first leg of the trail Old Bridle path is easy but the Ridge trail between West and East Rattlesnake is moderate difficulty.

My son really like it that there is a couple of trees along the way that was covered with mushroom. He calls them the mushroom tree. We didn't see much wildlife along the way however other than the usual squirrels and chipmunks and native birds. I was hoping to see an osprey or hawk or owl but didn't see any that day.

Now that I've done it I can see why it earns the top spot for the best trail in the area. The trail to the west rattlesnake mountain is easy but interesting every step of the way. The panoramic view of Squam Lake from the West Rattlesnake Mountain is absolutely memorable. I've recently purchased a nice 12x binocular for the hike and what an absolute treat.

I was able to see kayakers, sail boats and distant houses from the gorgeous summit. There is a good reason why this mountain always pack a crowd. There are plenty of shade so we really enjoyed the picnic food as well. The way back is even easier and more enjoyable as it is an easy downhill stroll all the way. This is one trail that I will definitely do again.

The east rattle snake trail is a little more wooded and thus more buggy than the west rattle snake mountain side. The view is good but definitely can not compare to the west rattle snake side. But it's a short hike for a relatively good reward.

Ridiculously beautiful payoff for such a short, easy hike. I’m usually a stickler for proper footwear but we did this in sandals with no problem.

Great for the the whole family

My kids do not like hiking as much as I do. My kids love this hike for the rock jump and swim!

Very easy trail. The leaves are slippery, but we were able to do the entire trail in an hour and 45 minutes with a couple of 15 minute stops at the tiny beaches! We even saw a massive snapping turtle in the water, which was cool, but I definitely didn't wanna go for a swim after seeing him haha. Bug spray is a must!

You cant beat the views for such an easy little hike. The one downside is how busy it always is.

Fantastic view for such a quick hike! Some parts are quite steep, but the view is worth it. If you're parking at the trailhead, make sure you get there early. There's only room for 4 or 5 cars
