This trail was quite busy for a rainy/foggy day. The parking lot for the trailhead was full by ~10am. Unfortunately most of the leafs were past peak and the hike was in the cloud so no great views. Very windy at the top.

NOTE: Not sure if there's been a trail name change, but AllTrails has one of the descending trail named as "Cathedral Forest Trail", but the trail signs said "Holt-Clark Cutoff" Great hike. Lost the Manning trail twice at two places where it seems like some yellow trail blaze paint would have been helpful. Missed a hard right up a small ledge maybe half-way to Firescrew as many people took a left, forming a "false trail" for maybe 100 yards. Then missed another right and ended up going up rock slab and after awhile not seeing any cairns, realized my mistake. So one should always pay close attention. Otherwise, great trail, but with a lot more significant scrambling than I expected. Definitely shoes with good traction is recommended. There was some light ice (but melting quickly) today making it a bit more nerve wracking. Not sure I would have wanted to descend that way (down Manning). Otherwise, great views and a very unique mountain - very unlike what I had been doing in the White Mountains. I did a detour to the South Peak, which was very short and had a great view back up to Cardigan - definitely recommend that. The decent was particularly nice on a nice, sunny late Fall day.

Went up south ridge better early views of south east, it’s a little steeper in places than west ridge trail, so I recommend going up the south ridge and coming down west ridge

Word to the wise. I did not realize that this loop, which I did counter clockwise would land me on a treacherous situation on the last 1/2 mi to the summit. Greatest fear was that I would begin to slide and ... I would not recommend attempting this route clockwise, especially when wet or icy! The views are spectacular, though conerns that the wind would blow me off kind of put a damper on me being able to enjoy them. Probably best to stick to West Ridge trail for an easy out and back. Especially when wet and snowy.

The trail was difficult especially after the rain and the incline was a little intense for my father who is 77, but we made it! And it was worth it!

Second time doing this hike. amazing views of the White Mountains and the foliage was peaked when we did this hike. It was gorgeous! The peak was incredibly windy but worth the trek.

HikingGreat!

Manning had varied difficulty & terrain, making for an interesting hike, with short slab climbs at the top. Beautiful views of lake & Presidentials for quite a while leading up to the top of Firescrew. Fun, mostly solid rock traverse to Cardigan, which also had incredible 360 views. Top of Clark was short, steep climb down to gentle wooded trail. River gorge near the end of this fast and easy descent. Had to park 1/4 of a mile away, but we had waited until afternoon, so most were gone by the time we finished.

HikingGreat!Rocky

First things first parking lot bathrooms were locked... consider yourself warned. The hike itself is great! We hiked up the more heavily trafficked west ridge trail, then you can either return as you came or if you are feeling adventures complete the route down the south ridge trail. Do not recommend doing this hike without hiking shoes because at points it was rather slippery or rocky. At the top are amazing views but would recommend the walk to the south peak if you are planning on eating as it has good cover from the wind.

Hiking

Gorgeous views from Holt trail on the way up and 360 views at the summit, but definitely be prepared to scramble/climb for the last half mile to the summit. There are some wet rock sections that are pretty challenging due to slipperiness. Would not recommend descending on the Holt trail. The descent via Vistamont and Clark is much, much easier. Nice views of Cardigan from South peak and Mount Gilman. Awesome hike if you like to scramble.
