Nice trail with a cool 360 view at the end. The grade is really pleasant for most of the hike and the steep grade towards the end is rocky, giving it a technical element (thus making it less grueling).
Definitely a great hike other than it being a pretty busy trail (saw about 8 other groups on a Sunday). In the summer you should definitely leave early to skip the midday/afternoon heat.

if you bring a dog you are only allowed to do trail 101 witch is VERY poorly marked (if even marked I didn’t even see anything out there). I talked to the ranger when I got back in you must walk approximately 100 feet down path 100 (which clearly says no dogs) before you see the break off to path 101. I wasn’t able to do the hike after talking to the ranger due to heat.

It’s a very fun hike! I would totally recommend to invest into some good hiking boots/shoes because it does get slippery going on down. The best part of the hike was the view at the top.

Fun! Did this hike this early this morning (4:30 a.m.) to catch the sunrise at the peak. Like others have said, the last 1/2 mile is killer.

The Black Mountain Trail is the perfect combination of mild to somewhat extreme, and I recommend taking a previous commenters suggestion and do the hike in moderate temperatures. It's not difficult, but the last half-mile to mile section gets to be a bit of a rocky climb. The trail makes for great desert scape/ wildlife observation. It's a peaceful hike, but once at the top you get bombarded by flying bugs. There's a white flag at just passed mid-way, and an American flag at the top next to a rock fort with a sign in canister. It takes about 2 hrs to get up with a moderate pace and breaks and about an hour and a half down at the same pace. The views at the top are definitely worth the work, and you can see the entire valley including Boulder City and part of Lake Mead. I would do it again and recommend it to others.

Kids loved the scrambling ..

it gets pretty steep so hiking shoes are a must

We walked late so it was already hot at 2pm.. the dry waterfalls leading to the petroglyphs are quite challenging for hikers with kids. Nice experience still

Trail was well marked. The water fall area was beautiful and the petroglyphs were cool. The majority of the trail is through a sandy wash. Unless you enjoy hiking / running in sand and scree, I would avoid this trail.
The park closes at 4:30. Plan according.

awesome trail.. great views and signed the message book at the flag! Great day!

Fun trail. Our 8 year old hiked right along side us, taking breaks when necessary. Awesome views along the way. Pretty strenuous at times but well worth making it to the peak. Didn't know there was a flag and sign in book up there so that was a nice surprise.

GoogleMaps and the "Directions" tab on BLM website took me to wrong places. Look or Democracy Dr and Via Firenze intersection. Now it's paved all the way. Straight part of trail is pretty boring. I took trail 100 and went right at the marker. Some climbing but easy trail, well marked. You'll see first petroglyphs on the left as you start to go around the bend. Soon after you'll see them all around. Then you'll hit the 10ft dropoff. Pretty easy way climbing up and around the right side. The most interesting part of the hike. Take water and a snack. Loose gravel the whole way.

I love going on this trail...lightly populated and lots of trail off-shoots from the main path to give a variety of distances and difficulties...I like the views too.

Not an easy trail. If you don’t do the loops, the trail is 7 miles. It is a nice trail. Definitely gets the heart pumping.

I took Option 2, the 200. The climb was pretty easy and the view was fantastic. Got a bit confused on the way back. There was a side route without any markings, but looked very used. I thought the petroglyphs were down that way. After a while I gave up and headed back down the 100. That’s when I found them! They are neat. Climbing down the waterfall is a bit tricky. I don’t suggest taking children or dogs. Biking is a definite no-go.
Really fantastic, except for the bit of confusion and the climb down the waterfall.

Great option to get away from the normal Las Vegas crowds

Pretty tough climb! The mountain progressively gets more challenging, but the view at the top is worth it. I wouldn’t do this on a day above 75° or any kind of rain. I’ve done some other “hard” trails on AllTrails, but this one was the toughest so far (mainly the ascent).

Awesome challenging trail. Definitely worth the view.

We had a great experience today, our 8 year old crushed the trail! Not an issue following trial, fairly easy finding markers and staying on course! Great hike! Petroglyphs were exciting to see!

Petroglyphs were awesome, waterfalls were fun to scramble up. Fun trail all around. Great staff at the ranger station.

wonderful Trail to amazing petroglyphs! Trail was easy to follow. Not sure why the person before had such trouble. There is one dry waterfall to climb up right before the petroglyphs but easy to do. Highly recommended.

The trail is very poorly marked. For those planning to do the whole loop study the map carefully and pay close attention to the 100/200/300 sign posts. I’m an experienced hiker and went off trail both times I hiked here. Today I went 10.5 miles on a supposed 3.8 mike hike. I take some responsibility for not bringing a map but I’m shocked at how poorly marked it is, considering they do have a ranger station. Not sure if I dare to try this again, unless I have someone waiting to pick me up in Jean!

Great early morning hike

I hiked the 100 trail here, but could definitely see it being good for trail running as well. Most of the hike is on loose sand/gravel so wear footwear with some lateral support. There is no shade, bring plenty of water and sunscreen! The second half of the 100 trail is very cool, as you walk through the canyon and find petroglyphs on the rocks. It's pretty easy hiking, there are a few dry waterfalls that you have to climb up, but nothing too difficult. I wish I had had more time to do the other trails!

This is one of the worst trails I’ve ever been on it is extremely rocky! And it is a double black diamond trail not an easy trail it is labeled wrong on this app

It was a fairly easy hike with some rock scrambling. The petroglyphs were amazing! There were quite a few to look at.

I really really enjoy running this trail. At the trailhead when you park, there is a bathroom and water. It’s not too hilly and you can run 8 miles out and back or take the many side trails. There are hikers and bikers and everyone was nice and respected sharing the trail. There was no trash!! Love these trails.

love the elevation gain.

if you want a harder 404 trail to the top of black mountain then go to the left of the original starting point wooden sign.

where you start the trail at the shack there are two Trails one to the left side of the mountain and one to the right side of the mountain.. The one to the left side by the water tanks or big beige gas tanks is a more strenuous difficult trail that not many can handle.

so if you want more of an adventure go to the left.

keep up with the trail with the wooden stakes poking out and rocks that prior hikers have placed on trail.

enjoy!
