Beautiful vista

The reviews and photos for this “trail” are all over the place. Some of the photos are on the xcountry ski trail, others appear to be on the Lakeside to Blacktail trail which is NOT a loop. It appears from other reviews that people did not even know where they were. Very untrustworthy, and not dependable.

flat & easy. A small stream in the first mile. Not too many good overlooks. The Alpine Loop that cuts through the to the right follows a very deep gorge.

Good hike up above the Izaak Walton Lodge (drive up the road behind the lodge to the trailhead to start). We saw only one other family up at the lake all day. The walk was aggressively steep at times, and very overgrown (mainly thimble berry bushes, but watch out for the occasional devil's club bush) in many areas. It was significantly harder than any other "moderate" rated trail we have done.
If you start early on a dewey morning, you might be in for a wet walk.
Lake is a picturesque spot for relaxing, or taking a swim (water was cool, but quite swimmable). Lots of small trout rising to take emergers off the surface.

We didn't walk the whole way. It's along logging roads.

We found the trail to be moderate but there are no signs for it. If you park at the Izaak Walton Lodge (which looks pretty cool). You have to take the metal bridge over the tracks. Not dog friendly especially in the summertime (that metal is very hot). We asked a lodge employee where to find the trail. I think he mistakenly told us to go the wrong way. You can park closer to the trail if you take the next road to the west that says Dickey Creek. Follow that road around to the left and you avoid the Izaak Walton Inn.

Okay, so I'd give it a 4.5 if you go on a weekday on an off week. Good hike with a few beautiful vista lookouts on the way up to the lakes. Defiantly worth the hike!

Great for Xcountry in the winter and Mtn biking late spring through summer and fall. Fairly popular year-round and a favorite with dog owners....recommend leasing until clear of other users! Deer and the occasional moose, fox and coyote is what I've seen, but I suppose cat, bear and even wolf inhabit the area from time to time.

9 miles of uphill. Well, the last bit is straight downhill. So, 7 mules of a graduated uphill with nice views of the Rockies. The last couple miles is rolling up and down before you take a plunge with twists and turns. Definitely worth the ride. We took our time and rode for about 3 hours. We would rate this moderate and the downhill a bit more than moderate.

One of my favorite hikes for fishing. Very steep but short trail i would rate as difficult. Can be accessed in winter via snowshoes, skis, or snow mobiles offering outstanding ice fishing for large trout.

Nice trail ride there yesterday. With the recent tree thinning, the views are much better!
