Good day hike to do with the dog. First mile was rough but it was easy after that initial incline. Lots of fallen trees to crawl under, and the water was really high so there were limited spaces to sit by the water.

Beautiful views for a quick out and back trip. Easy enough for a season starter to get you back into hiking.

The snow is about 3- 4' deep at this time. A friend and I snowshoed up with my two Labs. The lake is still frozen. The first part of the trail is a steep uphill grind but it levels off, sidehills for a distance and then drops into the lake. Nice hike. Its about two and a half mile round trip according to the Hiking guide of Montana which I would agree with. Great Northern and Grant Ridge which you can see from the foot of the lake are gorgeous.

Amazing scenery all the way up. Beginning of Trail can be confusing. The view from the top is worth every step. We passed quite a few little mountain goats.

This is by far my favorite hike in the flathead valley! There hasn’t been a time when I haven’t seen some form of wildlife (mountain goats, moose, etc.). Highly recommend!

Did this trail years ago with Wes and Sue. Camped and fished at the lake. Slid down the Glacier in July. I remember the bugs were relentless! Good memories.

Not as bad as I thought for a summit trail. It is a trek up but if you take your time you'll be fine.

Perfect little day hike. Lots to see along the way. In the fall the colors are amazing and it's not very crowded.

If you are looking for a trail that has steep switchbacks through the woods, with no noteworthy views for most of the hike, and little more than a dirt road at the end, then this is the hike for you! With the exception of a nice view of the lake at the beginning of the hike, this was a pretty disappointing hike.

Beautiful views and easy for everyone!

Great hike anytime of the year!

It hailed the whole time, but always a great time in the back country!

Cool Fall day, tons of bear scat, no bears!

Great loop. My gps measured at 2.2. FYI. A lot of bear sign. Bring your spray.

We hiked this trail right after it snowed. Beautiful scenery and a challenging climb. The view from Mt Aeneas was gorgeous. We took a different trail down.

Pretty trail, moderate difficulty. Lake is beautiful and has great fishing. I take my out of town family here every visit.

Great trail! Uphill climb in, easy out.

This hike is amazing ! We seen several goats, the wild flowers were amazing, and the views can't be beat. It's a HARD climb, so be prepared for that. the only bad part, was the flies !! We had bug spray on, and they seemed to love it ! The higher you get, the bigger the flies get and harder they bite !
I recommend going in the morning, so it's cooler while ur climbing. We didn't see any bears, but did see a few scat piles....so make sure you carry spray.
Have a great hike !

If this is "moderate," I'll be staying away from "hard" ratings.

Great hike. Was definitely interesting there was a nudist at the top!!

Great hike. Great views. LOVED IT! Just know the above info is not correct. My guess is the 3.2 miles is one way. Forgot to charge my GPS or would have a number for you. The map above is not the loop the description talks about either. It shows the hike as basically an out and back trip (ignore the loop it shows). If I had studied the map at the trail head, I would have found 717 goes down the other side of the summit and swings back around to Picnic Lakes. From the lakes you can proceed back the the parking lot finishing your loop. So study the map (or get one to take), know that your hike is likely 6 to 7 miles long and the hike is more than just a gradual incline to the summit. Also, don't forget to enjoy every step. Without the loop (which I would have loved) it's still a fabulous hike!

Very nice hike - no bugs and almost no people. Went a mile beyond maintained trail. Next time I'd go early and try for the mission range ridge.

Awesome views and a great trail to hike! Certainly one of the best trails I have ever hiked!

Good hike up above the Izaak Walton Lodge (drive up the road behind the lodge to the trailhead to start). We saw only one other family up at the lake all day. The walk was aggressively steep at times, and very overgrown (mainly thimble berry bushes, but watch out for the occasional devil's club bush) in many areas. It was significantly harder than any other "moderate" rated trail we have done.
If you start early on a dewey morning, you might be in for a wet walk.
Lake is a picturesque spot for relaxing, or taking a swim (water was cool, but quite swimmable). Lots of small trout rising to take emergers off the surface.

It was an absolutely beautiful trail. Lots of wildflowers and adorable chipmunks. I only encountered a few people and the lake was small, but completely worth it. The smoke was pretty bad so you couldn't see the valley. However, there were a lot of beautiful things on the trail to keep me distracted. The lake was pretty and a perfect temp to pop in and cool down!
I didn't think it was that hard of a trail. I mean I'm a bit out of shape so I was kind of puffing, but I'm out of shape!

Great hike. Do it every year

Amazing wildflowers! Shade and blue skies. Bring a map for peace of mind.

Visited from Canada. We hiked to Twin Lakes which was very beautiful. My friend jumped in which was glacier cold. Bring your bug spray!
