Not muddy or overgrown. Nice trail, lots of switchbacks. I needed to catch my breath a few times but the grade is not so steep that it hurts your knees coming down like some of the steeper trails. There was still quite a bit of snow around the lake. Not the prettiest lake but it was a great cardio session going up. No signs of bears. Saw several groups and families. Parking was a little crowded. Trail is mostly shaded. 2.5 miles uphill then a pretty much level last half mile to the lake once all the switchbacks are done.

Beautiful breathtaking views of Flathead valley and Hungry Horse Reservoir

Is there parking at the trailhead?

It was a nice trail. Beautiful views. But when we got close to the lake, I was far away from my husband, and then I hear my husband yelling for me "are you coming?". After that, I hear the bushes moving and a trampling noise through the bushes ahead of me. I saw my husband down the hill making rustling noises too. I realized that I heard a huffing of a bear. I did not see the bear. But it came down to the trail between my husband and I. I made sudden advances towards him. That is when my man headed down off the trail into the brush to get some distance from the bear. It was scared, this is the first time my hubby has an encounter like this. We are blesssed to be alive. He was too close to that bear. I love him so much and I want to be with my hubby for a long time.

We went a few days ago and we found it to be an enjoyable hike. Decent cardio workout. We didn’t see anyone the entire time which made us nervous about bears but we didn’t see any bear sign at all. Parts of trail were a little muddy and once we were close to the lake we were on deep packed snow. The lake was mostly frozen still. It was all uphill but not super steep. Our small dog made it no problem. The only animals we saw were chipmunks and a huge garter snake. The lake/views were pretty. There are absolutely no signs to help you find the trailhead. If you go over the bridge you’ve gone too far; the trail head is up on the right side of the road just before the bridge.

Wonderful trail! Great vistas of Flathead Lake! Hit the brewery

I’ve done this trail multiple times and it’s beautiful.

One of my favorite trails. Switchbacks are challenging but the views are worth it. Tried to hike it today but the top had too much snow to get all the way in.

you gain a lot of elevation... then drop low again. For a backcountry skiier its always a loss when u lose elevation and have to climb and gain it back. but the veiws of the valley are hard to beat!

Great trail if you are looking for a challenge!

difficult to find, dont follow the map link because that takes you to private property on the golf course. take the "getting there" instructions and you will find it.

would probably be great if you didn't spend most of your time just trying to find the trailhead.

Amazing scenery all the way up. Beginning of Trail can be confusing. The view from the top is worth every step. We passed quite a few little mountain goats.

This is by far my favorite hike in the flathead valley! There hasn’t been a time when I haven’t seen some form of wildlife (mountain goats, moose, etc.). Highly recommend!

Did this trail years ago with Wes and Sue. Camped and fished at the lake. Slid down the Glacier in July. I remember the bugs were relentless! Good memories.

Not as bad as I thought for a summit trail. It is a trek up but if you take your time you'll be fine.

Perfect little day hike. Lots to see along the way. In the fall the colors are amazing and it's not very crowded.

Hard to find the trailhead during the winter so i'm rating this a 3/5. Not groomed or anything either, but definitely plenty to discover and do a little bushwhacking.

quiet and be ready for a swim

The reviews and photos for this “trail” are all over the place. Some of the photos are on the xcountry ski trail, others appear to be on the Lakeside to Blacktail trail which is NOT a loop. It appears from other reviews that people did not even know where they were. Very untrustworthy, and not dependable.

If you are looking for a trail that has steep switchbacks through the woods, with no noteworthy views for most of the hike, and little more than a dirt road at the end, then this is the hike for you! With the exception of a nice view of the lake at the beginning of the hike, this was a pretty disappointing hike.

Awsome mountain biking trail!!!!!!

flat & easy. A small stream in the first mile. Not too many good overlooks. The Alpine Loop that cuts through the to the right follows a very deep gorge.

Bug spray and cover up for the flies! We did this hike in late July with the beargrass on full display.

Cool Fall day, tons of bear scat, no bears!

Not what I expected. I was looking for a 10 mile hike and thought this was it. When this says it is 5.3 miles I thought the trail would end. There is a small waterfall at about 2.5 miles but the trail continues on after that. If you want to go to the lookout at the top of the mountain it is about 7.3 miles one way that are pretty steep. Since I didn’t know what to expect on this trail I kept going past the waterfall. If you want to see a better waterfall than the one that is directly on the trail, cross the small river and go up the riverbank on the right. There is about a 20 foot waterfall about 2/8 of a mile up the river. The trail does go up at first and then down and then up. The last 4 miles are really steep so be prepared. The view from the top is breathtaking.

Great loop. My gps measured at 2.2. FYI. A lot of bear sign. Bring your spray.

We hiked this trail right after it snowed. Beautiful scenery and a challenging climb. The view from Mt Aeneas was gorgeous. We took a different trail down.
