on North Ridge Trail

It was a great day for a hike & we just wanted a short one before heading back to the city. This gave a moderate challenge with the hill climb. The end was a bit disappointing. If there had been leaves on the trees you probably wouldn't be able to see the river.

Great warm up trail. Good elevation changes, and the Overlook area is really beautiful late fall.

Good hike for the location. Waiting on fall to head back, should be beautiful.

Easy hike with decent views. Can imagine it'd be much more beautiful in the fall with the changing colors.

This trail was pretty, but it offered neither the variety of views offered by other trails in the park nor views of the river. When we used this trail, it had not been used recently, and the span of the trail had so many spiderwebs across it that my husband and I had to remove the webs at least every five feet the entire length of the trail. Grass and moss had grown lushly over spans of the trail. We turned back approximately 0.2 miles from the end because we were tired of knocking down webs.

My husband and I only walked the 1.8 mile stretch from the Weston Bend State Park down to the trail-head near Bethany. This park was gravel rather than paved, which we preferred. The trail was well-cared for and bright. It ran along the edge of Weston Bend State Park and was closely flanked by a railroad track. It had nice views of the river, a bridge over a small creek, and we saw a variety of wildlife, including squirrels and a small garter snake. I would recommend this trail for a gentle walk or bike ride.

This trail, only moderately-difficult at one or two points, offered much for visual gratification. The landscape below the trees was beautiful, with lush undergrowth, vines climbing up the trees, and dramatic fluctuations of elevation. At 4-5 points along the trail we saw well-kept signs that offered insight into the speciation, migration, and survival habit of birds that live in the area. It was a short, enjoyable hike my husband and I plan to do again in the future!

Great trail.. we brought our dog for a morning hiking session outside KC. Didn't give it 5 only because the views weren't all that spectacular and the trail head was a bit deceiving. We ended up walking more than we needed to, which is fine just a little confusing.

Good hike, some steep hills nice views of the river

Nice little hike. Keep dogs on leash. if they like bounding into the woods without looking they might fall off of a very high ridge/cliff.

Really nice hiking. The trails hold up when damp too.

Pretty trail, overlooks the Missouri River on the west side of the loop. Unfortunately, a coal train goes by every twenty minutes or so ruining the peace.

Take plenty of water with you, lots of hills!

Nice local trail for me at one time.
Good place to get out of the city and into nature.

Not the most scenic, but a nice set of trails. There are some views off of the west ridge, where you can look over into Kansas. I got about 2.5 miles in a loop. Part of the trail enters the paved course. You can copy and paste the link below for details.

good 2.25 mile trail, they have revised it so it isn't straight out and back. took our 4 year old and she made it the whole way.

We started at sunrise. Sight was beautiful. Overlook the river and trains. We also had three deer across our trail. We are going back soon. Well worth the 45 mins drives from my house. Wish it was a longer hike.

my 6 year old daughter and I hiked this trail this morning. It is a easy trail that measures .9 miles each way. while walking we saw multiple types of butterflies and a snake. The scenery didn't really offer much views due to the woods being so thick and the trail just seems to end in the middle of nowhere. overall it was a decent little hike.

great trail make sure it's been dry for a couple days before you hike. it could be muddy otherwise.

good views of the river. I enjoyed it.

This trail offers a great wide path for hikers only. You'll find various audio descriptions along the way with QR codes or a downloadable app to your smart phone. The trail has 209ft of elevation gain with a spectacular view just slightly beyond the trails end (be careful this part is very narrow).

My review is a repeat of what I wrote on the page for the Paved Bike Trail. The AllTrails description above captures this trail well.
I really like to walk/hike the Paved Bike Trail until it reaches the Harpst/Overlook trails. Then you're on a natural trail and climbing up the ridge to reach a large wooden deck to overlook the Missouri River. From there, join the West Ridge Trail and follow it along the top of the ridge, with the river below you and Leavenworth, KS just across the River. It's great to be on the trail when the leaves are all down, because the view of the Missouri River is really fantastic. Definitely watch for tree roots and precarious areas where the ridge drops off! Some barbed fencing, so be careful if you bring pups with you (canine or human!).

Descend the West Ridge Trail to meet up with the paved trail again, and you still have about 2 miles to loop back to the TH.

Love this hike. The best around this area, specially during fall. A bit challenging, which is awesome! Great views of MO lake. A must do if you love to hike and live around the KC metro area.

Was in St. Joe for business and stopped by park on way home. Simple hike along the bluff overlooking the Missouri river. Worth the hike when at the Park. Not a destination hike.
