This was a pleasant hike without any steep elevation changes. I did this hike mid-week on a sunny day in December with temperatures around 50* F. I was surprised how few other people took advantage of the weather. I only encountered one couple walking their dog and 1 trail runner.

This is a hike that you can take kids on because of the relatively easy grade and distance. Although it is 5+ miles out and back, you can leave people at the bluff top parking lot (halfway point) and come back by car to pick them up later.

Even though the main restrooms at the Glencoe parking lot are now closed for the season, there were rather new and clean porta potties both there and at the bluff-top parking area.

By the way, you can park at the bluff top parking lot and then walk a little over 5 minutes back along the trail to reach the scenic Meramec River overlook.

The only other thing I might add is that the trail was somewhat damp from a snowmelt the week before. So hiking poles were much appreciated in keeping balance at some of the slippery points along the trail.

Nice relatively easy hike, mild grade. Fabulous view at the bluff at the end. Definitely worth it.

We tried to do the Al Foster trail starting with the directions at Castlewood Park. You have to take the river scene trail a ways to get there. This is definitely mountain biking - not road biking. Pretty trail but would not call this “easy” for kids to bike

There are several hidden gems along these trails. Pick your terrain: paved, crushed stone, sandy, or dirt. In the woods, next to a river, shaded trail that's kid friendly, wheelchair accessible, mountain biking, hiking, this system of trails cover them all.

Rock Hollow begins on Ridge Rd at the elementary school. It's paved with woods on either side of the trail. My niece is in a wheelchair. While it was a little challenging going up the incline in the last mile back to the car, it wasn't a deterrent from coming back a second time. For those who don't want a cultivated paved trail, endure it for a mile or so. You'll get to a few entrances into the woods for a more rugged hike or mountain biking. 10 miles worth I believe. I don't know where the one to the left goes. I hiked it for about an hour linear then turned back. The trail to the right of the Rock Hollow trail goes to Bluffview which overlooks The Meramec River. Rock Hollow, Al Foster, and another trail (I don't remember its name) all converge. It's all well marked.

Sherman Park has the Al Foster trail to the right. It's crushed stone and also wheelchair friendly. It's well shaded and runs along the Meramec River. If you go to the left at the trailhead, it's sandy beach type terrain only for 5 or ten minutes. Then it's into the woods for hiking.

If you want to go hiking or even just walking in seclusion, my advice is to hit it early on a weekday.

Nice trail. Watch out for mountain bikes.

If you live close by, I can see that this trail is handy to get out and "stretch your legs." I knew it was quite busy on the weekends so I visited on a Wednesday in late September.

The section along the Meramec River from the Glencoe trailhead to Sherman Beach Park was the most busy section.

I only encountered 1 biker and 1 trail runner between Sherman Beach Park and the turn around point in Castlewood SP. And, there was only one car parked at the Sherman Beach Park lot.

The walk is easy but I just didn't feel like I was hiking as it felt too suburban at several points. But, if you live nearby, it certainly makes for a nice place to get out for some exercise.

BTW, the trail as shown on the map is not a loop but is instead an out-and-back trail.

Nice path that starts along the river, all shaded but must keep an eye out for the mountain bikers.

Follow trail signs for Bluff View

Solid hiking trail, but this is a trail that appears to be more used for mountain biking. This isn’t bad, but you do need to keep any eye out for them.

fast pace trail very cool temps throughout the hike due to the woods

Great trail for the whole family. Very easy bike ride

is the 9.7 mile easy to follow?

Enjoyed the bluff view. There are a lot of mountain bikers. Lots of mosquitoes.

Great trail, just be aware of all the bikers. They don’t like to say anything when they are coming, so you have to be aware.

Hiked this with my three kids, 12,9 and 5. They aren’t ones for long hikes, but they enjoyed this 5 mile out and back with a great lookout at the turn. Close enough to civilization that you have cell service in the event you suddenly hear thunder and need to check radar, as we did. I highly recommend this trail for families in the STL area looking for a nearby hike.

I’m relatively new to mountain biking, but could not imagine a more enjoyable, picturesque trail.

Good overall Trail with little bit of everything, along the river, along a vertical bluff, then a little elevation, forest, a little stream, culminates into a picturesque valley view with a river running through it, and then back.

Flat trail that has a lot of offshoots allowing you to add mileage as needed. Will definitely hike this again!

Great trail with a good mix of uphill and downhill. Beautiful view at the top. Hikers and mountain biker use both, most bikers give good warning that they are coming up behind you as the trail is narrow.

Easier to find trailhead in Bluffview Park rather than by the railroad. Nice hike but lots of bikers.
