The natural beauty that characterizes Missouri is more than skin deep. Missouri, the Cave State, has more than 5,500 caves, and some of the state's most scenic natural wonders lie beneath the surface -- in caves. One Missouri cave stands out above the rest -- Onondaga Cave in Onondaga Cave State Park. Deep underground there is a world that nature has created using water to form deposits of tall stalagmites, dripping stalactites, active flowstones and many other colorful deposits. Onondaga Cave, a National Natural Landmark, and Cathedral Cave showcase these natural wonders, which can be viewed during cave tours. There is also plenty of natural beauty to enjoy above ground at the park. Vilander Bluff Natural Area provides visitors with a panoramic view of the Meramec River. Come and take a hike through the Meramec River valley, canoe or fish in the Meramec River or enjoy a picnic lunch. Learn about the park's natural resources above and below the earth's surface through exhibits inside the visitor center. The park's campground offers both basic and electric/water campsites, many of which are reservable.

Nothing to write home about. Just an average Trail for the average hiker. Not too difficult. Just repetitive terrain and scenery.

Love this trail! Beautiful scenery.

All paved and goes along the water for most of the way. Pretty but not really a hike.

This well blazed wooded loop trail is probably best hiked during the fall or spring when there are fewer leaves and you can see the valley the Meramec River flows through. It would be a nice trail for trail running as it has some nice ascents and descents and is rocky in parts.

Highly recommend especially the cliffs along the river. But even deep in the woods the trail was built into the side of the hill as it snaked around hills and ravines. Lots of rocks and roots in the trail. Sometimes the trail seemed to dead end into the hill just to make a 90degree turn and continue around the hill. Hiked in about 2hrs with a 6 yr old and a 60 yr old. Really pretty.

Decent trail. Beginning is neat with the river over look. Did a lil trail walk/running on this one with the “Zombies, Run!” App. Fun times.

Easy trail. Pretty wide open. Bring good shoes since there are jagged rocks along the trail.

We were expecting to be able to see the river from the bluff, but apparently the pamphlet where we got our info was incorrect. A good workout nonetheless. No one else on the trail. All shaded so we kept out of the sun and cooler.

Okay hike. Well shaded, but not necessarily well marked. Did get lost about 3/4 way in. A LOT of webs to walk through

Enjoyable, well used trail that is nicely blazed. The left portion of the loop will take you directly to bluffs overlooking the Meramec River. There are several short side trails from there that give different views of the river along the bluff. The remainder of the trail passes mostly through forest although there are several wet weather streams to cross as well as a couple of glades. The entrance to the Cathedral Cave is toward the beginning of the right portion of the loop but was locked when I passed by.

This trail is about one mile in length if you go out and back (1/2 mile each way). The entire length of the trail is paved. There were some interesting rock and water features along the way. The highlight was a beautiful Red-Eared Slider crossing the trail that posed for a photo.

This was an enjoyable hike through the Ozark woods. There are a couple of wet weather waterfalls. While the trail is mostly wooded, there are some glades that provide a nice view. A thunderstorm blew in while I was at the half way point, which did create a little excitement. The highlight was a Whitetail Deer next to the trail that made a loud snort and ran off as I did some trail running to avoid the rain and lightening.

This trail follows a steep paved service road uphill (if you go clockwise) and then follows along Highway H leading to the park’s visitor center (which has a great collection of nature and hiking books for sale) and finally it overlaps the Blue Heron Trail back to the starting point.

Excellent hike. It would be good to note this trailhead is directly behind the showerhouse that you will find if you pass the State Park visitor center and take the very next right turn, through the camping area. Start the loop to the right and you’ll be blown away by the views at the end. There are also awesome side trials to take to get great views of the river.

Very short trail but it does climb around and over a good sized hill. I takes you to the top of the hill that Vilander Bluff is on but never gives any views of the bluff or valley below. Found this very disappointing since this is the tallest bluff on the Meramec River. I've seen pictures of the bluffs but it's up to you to do some bushwhacking to try to find a vantage point.

Did this hike on 2.25.18 and loved it. Great views from the bluffs and great exercise on the hike. Pics are uploaded. Plus, see these and more at my IG: wdp_photographyinstructor

Gorgeous, little paved trail. We took our 5 yr old and also pushed an 11-mnth baby in a stroller. A couple of water sources to look at, a little waterfall and an old foundation of some sort of building off in the woods on the left. It's a simple, little trail that's great for even the smallest of kiddos.

Great view of the meramec over bluffs. Nice stands of oak and cedars. Glades. A nice easy walk.

Not really a hike as it's all paved, but a beautiful short walk. If you park at the beginning of the campground it works out to be a little over a mile round trip.

Very nice hike for everyone. I would recommend starting by going right instead of left. Trails are very well maintained.

Really an awesome trail. It's quite hilly, but also only 2.75 miles long. Beautiful views along the Meramec River. I love how the trail is narrow and not a huge ugly swath cut through the woods.

Loved the view of the river along the trail. It was such a beautiful color today! Not a great trail to start off on if out of shape, but wasn't too bad.
