Definitely enjoyed this hike! We hiked about 23 total miles from country road 6 to PENN Blvd. used Bob from superior shuttle for transportation. We did an overnight in between at east palisade creek. From county road 6 to the camp site, it’s about 16 miles. Much farther than I had calculated and too far in my opinion for one day!
I’d say some of the best views of the entire Superior trail. Lake Superior was visible in a number of places and at other peaks, we had amazing views of the trees (which were just starting to turn colors). The fog was super thick on the days we went, so we probably even missed a number of stunning views.
The camp sites were very basic. No picnic table, but did have a latrine, fire pit and some wooden plank seating. No bear hanging area like other sections of the trail have, so had to make our own.
The lack of water resources actually surprised me considering how wet it’s been this summer. Fill up when you see a creek!
I’d do this section again, but maybe over three days instead of two.

Perfect spot to watch the moon rise!

Beautiful falls at the end of an easy, well-paved trail. To enjoy the full experience make sure to cross the hanging bridge and follow the trail to the bottom of High Falls

Beautiful trail with varying elevations. Take the steep stairs (there had to be 75+ stairs) down to the river before the falls. Very quiet, which I assume not many trek down because of these stairs. We had the river to ourselves for the entire time. On the way back up you’ll get a good leg workout! We did this after exploring High Falls.

Great shoreline views but very mosquito-ey!! They know the path is highly frequented

A good waterfall to hike for (High Falls) that isn’t as crowded as Gooseberry. If you’re going to hit the other waterfalls, see them on the way - none are as impressive as High Falls. Also, a cool suspension bridge is just above the falls. P.S. Watch out for big scary black beetles flying around this time of year!

Awesome falls, cool swinging bridge and nice elevation changes make for a good hour long hike.

Great waterfall views at both top and bottom of the waterfall. Nice easy hike in with a great path. Cool
Old suspension bridge you can cross and the falls have multiple view points to see down the river.

Nice hike today we had a blast

Great hike for families. As others have said the park rates it moderate because of the stairs. If your little ones can handle the stairs it's a great hike for families. Beautiful views!

Great Hike! Took about 2 hours with two adults, two kids (10 & 8) and a dog. This trail goes down to both Two Step Falls and the High Falls. It also continues to the High Falls observation bridge. It does not go to Cascade Falls. If you plan on going down to see both falls plan on about 500 steps.

My boyfriend and I enjoyed every bit of it! Extremely beautiful!

Not too difficult. Hiked easily with my 2 month old in a carrier and my 7 year old handled it well. Beautiful views of the river and falls.

This says it is Easy but Park maps rate it Moderate because it has 300 stairs on the trail. Nice viewing spots.

This is the hike to the High Falls from the Visitor Center. It also includes Cascade Falls. The shorter hike to High Falls does not go by Cascade Falls.

I think this trail is the trail to the High Falls from the trailhead lot. You can cross the River on metal swing bridge and get down below the falls. Nice!

Lots of stairs:). great trip to the waterfall. the hanging bridge is a photo spot and a swim upstream towards the falls is worth the walk.

This is a wonderful hike with beautiful views. Be sure to take the trail down to the river and catch the beautiful photo ops.

great views once the hike is over.... muddy and visible water puddles along the way, so dress appropriately

Really like this trail. A few tougher stretches along the way, but the views from the High Falls are definitely worth it!

Great scenery--falls are just as nice as Gooseberry but hiking is moderately harder. Trails are nice. Could use updated way finding as many signs are becoming hard to read. They are apparently doing trail maintenance and in those areas the trail was drier--other areas were very wet and muddy because of erosion and lack of gravel cover. Beautiful visitor center. Saw several bird species and amazing fungus and mushrooms everywhere. Be prepared to do a lot of ups and downs--lots of stairs. I saw folks hiking in tennis shoes but I was glad to have the ankle support of my heavy hiking boots.

Fantastic quick hike. Park at the visitor center and have miles of hiking around you. Kaiaking routes available to.

Access to Sawmill Dome from Little Marais Road (Lake County Rd 6) is two miles west of our home. We hike this portion of the Superior Hiking Trail often. Ascent is steep from County Rd 6, about 200 feet in 1/4 mile. Steep ups and downs the whole route to MN Highway 1 near Illgen City. Worth the effort. Another wonderful access point is from Wolf Ridge Environmental Leaning Center, near Finland, Minnesota. Several trails branch off from the ELC access.

Crowded, very crowded day on this trail. Otherwise great trail, tough at times. Didn't hike far, again, to crowded for me.
