Take the trail that winds along the edge of the Temperance River gorge and enjoy the rushing waterfalls surrounded by pine, spruce, cedar and birch forests. The rapidly flowing river has cut deep potholes in and along the riverbed. Hike the trail to Hidden Falls or connect up with trails into the Superior National Forest and the Cross River Wayside. Visitors come to camp and picnic along the shore of Lake Superior. Winter brings cross-country skiers and snowmobilers to tackle the hilly terrain. Carlton Peak, a recent addition to the park, is popular with rock climbers and offers even more recreational opportunities to park visitors.

Best views on the lake and gorgeous views of the Temperance river as well. A family favorite for years.

I generally do the short hike from the trail head this is the first time I hiked from the Temperance river trailhead and LOVED IT. The first 3 miles of this hike are easy and the last half mile is moderate to difficult. I loved the amazing views of the Temperance River. There are lots of short excursion trails by the river where you can get better views. The last part of the hike around Carlton Peak is a bit irregular and a more challenging. Great views from the summit and Ted Tofte overlook.

Great trail, reminded me of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia, great views throughout!

Loved this hike! Trekking poles very helpful with the irregular terrain.

Great hike and the views make the uphill worth it! Trekking poles are a necessity.

Easy to access, but crowded trail. Dog-friendly. Requires some careful footing at times, but overall a fairly easy hike for most people. River is forceful, rugged, and impressive. Several great viewpoints. Worth a quick hike, even if you skip the wooded portion of the loop in favor of just seeing the river.

Hiked this in the drizzling rain, so couldn’t get as close to the sides, as I normally would have, but this river/falls are Spectacular. Slot canyons, reminiscent of Utah, in Minnesota. Loved this easy hike.

Breathtaking to start the trail off right by the river- the falls were unexpected and gorgeous! If you’re going all the way up to the peak be ready for a steep climb- not for the faint of heart with the flat terrain us Minnesotans are used to!

Beautiful hike with some great falls inside the gorge. The kids loved walking in the river (where it was ankle deep and very safe).

I’ve trod this path many times. In my twenties lugging climbing gear and a sleeping sack to spend weekends at Carlton peak, climbing and exploring, the woods, the rock and myself. As a grown up, sharing the path with my wife, on the weekend of our engagement and later still, having traded climbing gear for children, with my daughters, showing them the beauty of the shore. This is a wonderful trail filled with memories both epic and fond. Take some time to make your own here.

Beautiful views. Hike was rocky but not too difficult.

This is a beautiful hike! It's not hard, but keep.ypur little ones close. There are lots of drop offs, cliffs, and slippery rocks. The river also moves dangerously fast through this section.

a little steep in some spots with the snowshoes, fantastic view of Lake Superior at the top

Metal cleats made the hike an awesome day

Great any time of year. MicroSpikes can be a big help in certain spots in winter.

I love this hike! It is a beautiful place. one does need to be careful for slippery rocks in places. I grew up hiking here when I was younger and just visited again this year.

The river gorge hike is a highlight on the North Shore.

Fairly easy hike along a tight and very interesting river gorge. Hidden Falls is the highlight, but the area above the falls is nice too. Don't get in a hurry on your way up the North Shore and miss this one.

The Temperance River is a great spot for a short or extended hike up river. We only went as far as the falls and Cauldron. But when the water is really running after a good rain, this is a neat spot to check out.

very well maintained trails with great views of river, waterfall, and lake superior. Carlton peak is a must for any hiker.

For MN hiking at lower elevations this is moderate difficulty but if you are used to high elevation hiking it is easy.

Great view of the river.

4 stars for Minnesota, rare long-distance views from the top. One can see far to the north, Lake Superior to the south, and even Wisconsin on a clear day. Fun most any time of year. Swimming on the Temperance is good on hot days.
