Explore the most popular trails in Lake Maria State Park with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

Visitors who come to Lake Maria State Park will enjoy one of the few remaining stands of the "Big Woods," a maple, oak and basswood forest that once covered part of southern Minnesota. The park is perfect for hikers, backpackers, horseback riders, and cross-country skiers who enjoy the challenge of the rolling terrain. Take a stroll on the boardwalk which winds through a marsh. Backpack sites, located on remote lakes and ponds throughout the park, are one to two miles from the trailhead parking. New log camper cabins, located near lakes and ponds, provide bunk beds for six people and a table and benches for campers who want more of the creature comforts. Lake Maria State Park is home to the Blandings turtle, easily identified by bright yellow spots on its shell. It is one of Minnesota's threatened species.

Lovely quiet walk among the towering trees. Past peak fall color, but sporadic pockets of yellows and red could still be found. Lots of whitetail deer running throughout the words; even had a bald eagle soar right overhead. Lots of trail markers to make finding your way quite easy.

Favorite trail I've been on so far!! Some of the trail allows horses, but I didn't see any. Definitely a nice and peaceful trail! Besides the trail center building which contains a bathroom, we didn't see anyone the whole 4-5 miles on our hike. When you arrive, you have to stop and pay $7 for a parking permit, otherwise nice roads with a fairly big parking lot. The trail had plenty of signs letting you know where you are. The signs can sometimes be a little confusing though.

A nice easy trail that was simple to hike and very well marked. It was perfect for our 3 and 5 year old. They were able to do the whole loop. The trail was nicely kept up and we loved looked at the pond from the bridge. A perfect trail for a family hike with smaller children.

This is a very well maintained trail. It can be muddy in some areas there was only one place where we had to walk in some tall grass to get over some deep mud. It is buggy as it’s surrounded by a lot of ponds and some marsh. Wear a long sleeve shirt and cover you head to keep the flies at bay. Saw a few deer, owl, swans and other birds. It is very shaded for most of the trail. On the day we went it was 81 degrees but we stayed comfortable.

Beautiful and peaceful.

Fairly easy trail and well maintained. Didn't see much wildlife, but the views on a few of the hilltops were pretty great! We missed the peak leaves by about a week or so or I may have rated the trail a little higher. I'll be back in the winter months to try out the remote cabins we passed.
