It’s funny how oddly anti-climactic it is seeing the beginning of the Mississippi. But a BEAUTIFUL spot, nice easy hike. The park has lots of information about the river & the discovery of the headwaters at an info center at this trailhead.

Great trail. Lush vegetation. Nice lake views. At a little over 2 miles and a bit of up and down it was a good test for young kids’ (3-5 years) hiking endurance.

Great views, but parts of the trail were becoming overgrown in July. Great hike with some hills.

Nice relaxing trail that takes you past an old log cabin made from very large timber. Many nature markers along the trail that I wish we had the secret decoder ring for so we would have known why they were there.

Very easy trail, with quite a lot of traffic. Completely worth it to see (and wade in) the headwaters of the Mississippi River.

Note the length of this trail is actually a little over 3 miles. I hiked it right after a light snowfall. Beautiful!!!

The loop trail shown is called the "Dr. Roberts Trail." It is a nice, moderate hike through the woods and along a lake. The 2-mile loop makes it just the right length for a family with kids.

So cool to see where the Mississippi River starts. We went at sunset, so it was not too busy, but still quite a few people.

Itasca lake was incredibly clear with lots of birds. The terns dive bombing into the water was a hoot to watch and the trumpeter swans were breathtaking. Several other birds were spotted as well. I never stopped hearing multiple birds chirping.

Itasca State Park is a great place. There are trails that are easy and short and their are trails that are longer and get you out to some real forest. I went last October that the color of the leaves are fantastic. The Mississippi River head water though not really hiking is really fun to see

Great Place to camp

This is one of those places you must go and see for yourself if you find yourself in Minnesota. There is a 17 mile bike trail going around the lake, boat rentals, cabins, campgrounds, and tons of wildlife. I had a skunk run right up to me while I was sitting in front of the the camp fire (Thank God I didn't get sprayed). You can even walk across the headwaters of the Mississippi river. The only down side to it is the extremely bad mosquitos. Wear light-weight long-sleeved shirts and blue jeans to salvage as much of your skin as possible. I left with around 30 bites on my arms and didn't bother counting my legs (I was only there 1.5 days).

Great environment to experience. I went during this time of year as the numbers of wildflowers in the woodland areas is at it's greatest. The Haptica, False Solomn Seal and Trilium were at thier best. Many photo opportunities with the wildflowers and the vistas found along the trial. Following the North Country trail adds a historic perspective the can be brought time the journey. Adding this dimension lends itself to extending the journey to the next legs of the trial. Woeth while visit on this section of the trial. Itasca Park as a whole is a treasure to the State Park system and deserves a longer visit to see the diversity and history that abounds in the park.
