Hiking

A lot of challenging hills climbing in the sand. It is rewarding if you make it all the way to Lake Michigan.

HikingGreat!

It’s best to do this hike on a cloudy day the sand isn’t hot on your feet and you aren’t baking in the sun. There is no shade, but it’s great to cool off in Lake Michigan if you go the whole way! Definitely worth going all the way to the lake!

Lots of people. I like how you can choose alternate trailways for portions of the journey- it made things more interesting for us. Beautiful views and a nice brief toe dip in the chilly Lake Michigan waters at the end.

Super steep and deep sand, it poured rain almost the whole time we hiked but it was still very fun!

Fun little hike. -1 Star for the crowds but otherwise it’s beautiful. I did this one sight on-site, so I had not read anything about it until after. Lots of false “peaks” on the dunes. Barefoot and shorts is the way to go. It’s more of a challenge than it looks, but really not hard at all.

I did not expect to hike for this long but the trail was a nice surprise. Very pleasant. Bring water!

Just as advertised. Deep sand. Steep dunes. Sunny very little shade. But, oh what an experience! Unlike anything else I’ve hiked. As others have said, bring water.

One of my favorite trails! It’s a great hike out to Lake Michigan.

Best hike of our trip. Deep sand in places, but certainly manageable. Impressive diversity of ecosystems in such a short hike. Views for days.

Not my favorite trail, but we were the only ones on the trail so that was a huge bonus. The “lookout” is NOT a lookout! Haha. It was a good workout but nothing special.

Barefoot & shorts works the best, follow the mile markers for best route, pack in a liter of water at-least and 2-3 granola bars. Highly excruciating but the clear water at the lake and great views makes it worthy. 90 mins to go up and 45 mins to come back.

Awesome lake views and a tremendous diversity of plant life. A few stretches of sand climbs, but what goes up does come down on this wonderful loop trail.

I didn’t check any reviews or noticed the length of the trail before I started so I actually thought the lake was behind the first dune. Boy was I wrong. It took me and my brothers friends (15yrs) about 1.5 hours to get there mainly because we went off trail at one point. It took about 45 minutes to get back. We did not have water, sunscreen or hats so don’t make that mistake. The water at the end of the trail is absolutely breathtaking. I’m not sure I’d consider it necessarily hard tho.

Fun, beautiful, easy trail. Took the path to Lake Michigan shore and it was very shady. Once you get to the dunes the sand can become very hot barefoot but the views are stunning!! Went all the way down to the water and had a little picnic on the beach
