A day-use park along a secluded strip of Lake Michigan shoreline, Saugatuck Dunes State Park offers 2.5 miles of shore line. The park has fresh water coastal dunes that are over 200 feet tall. The park's terrain varies from steep slopes to rolling hills.

Great adventure on a 5 mile hike through the woods that ends up at sand dunes and a sandy beach on Lake Michigan. Be sure to pack a lot of water and sunscreen as the dunes and beach get hot with no shade from the sun and also bug spray as the mosquitoes and flies are plentiful in the forest (went early July). Overall, great workout and sightseeing as dunes are challenging in the sun and Lake Michigan offers an amazing yet private view of the water and surrounding area! It was so hot when we went we hopped right in the Great Lake and the water was refreshing! Also, we packed a small lunch which was perfect and the hike took a couple hours in and out if you stay moving. This is truly Pure Michigan!

Beautiful trail. Some of the dunes that were uphill were a little challenging, even for someone who is in shape. Be prepared for lots of sand in your shoes. Definitely worth it for the gorgeous views.

Peaceful woods (which would have gotten a bit monotonous if the trail were any longer tbh) lead out over the dunes to an almost private strip of beach which I’m sure is gorgeous at sunset! Took my older parents on a Mother’s Day hike and they managed easily — it’s pretty flat :) Lots of pups so definitely bring yours! Also lots of parking, which is $11 if you don’t have a state park permit already. Outhouse bathrooms only at the trailhead!

Great 5.5 mike hike from trailhead and back. The dunes are cool and the small beach at the tip of the tail is breathtaking for a Kansan. Saw no one on the trail and my dog loved the sand.

The trail is beaitiful and moderately challenging. There are a lot of veering off that are unmarked. We took 12 to 14 and looped back around but somehow never saw the 13 mark. It was an adventure and we loved it! Dunes for sure.

Great trail. Beautiful views between the woods and the dunes. Steep climb up the dunes from the beach, but other than that a pleasant hike.

Trail head for the south trail was on the Livingston trail. We walked the trail, my wife and I and we both found the trail pleasantly nice until we got to the sand dunes, this is were the moderate rating is earned. Though not to bad for me, I rested a few times going up the trail. The entire trail was sand, either hard pack with dirt and the loose stuff was by the lake. We enjoyed this trail and would recommend it.

Beautiful hike! Caught the sunset with my dogs on the beach, but next time I won't forget my headlamp for the hike out in the pitch black!

Awesome hiking trails!

This is our favorite "hike to Lake Michigan" trail. Beach is usually private when we go in September on a 70 degree or more day (sunny).

Love this trail ~ open dunes, forest, and beach access! Great dunes along the way & at the beach. Definitely earned its "Moderate" rating!

The end goal is a beauty it was pretty tough.

The trail is nicely taken care of. Finding the entrance was a little rough for me, but I believe that was because of where I parked.

One quick note: if you aren't that in shape take the trail in a counter clockwise rotation. Doing it clockwise leaves a lot of steep dunes on the back half of your hike.

quite a beautiful spot with enough graduated hill climbs to make it interesting and excellent views of Lake Michigan.

Well groomed forest trail through the dunes. Easy walk, some hills. Great for all ages.
