Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (60,000 acres) is one of the few remaining large wilderness areas in the Midwest. Towering virgin timber, secluded lakes, and miles of wild rivers and streams make a visit to the "Porkies" a trip to remember. Black bears are common in the Porkies.

Nice mostly flat trail that hooks up with the Lake Superior trail for easy access to sites on Lake Superior. LS-3 is winner for being a bit isolated. Lots of mosquitos still but not too muddy. Made a weekend trip out of it with a few adults and a few kids. No one was disappointed!

Hiked the east trail from the south boundary road. You can park there near the bridge and get on the trail there. It’s a beautiful hike along the river and falls. The east trail is more rugged than the west trail but not difficult. Moderate would be an appropriate rating in my opinion. Hike this trail to Lake Superior and back and you will have gone appropriately 2 1/4 miles. One of my favorite hikes. Our dogs love it

Absolutely stunning!

super short little hike to overlook - which has a great view. but it's worth continuing on the trail to the left, alot more great views with evaluation change up and down.

A little muddy but the views are certainly worth it. Elevation can be challenging at times but nothing extreme.

Fabulous hike through beautiful forest and many waterfalls along the river. We took our 2 small dogs with us and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. i reccomend this hike to everyone.

I did this as part of a larger loop so went west to east on it. Amazing trail with forests and ridges and every kind of natural view you could want. You see the river a few times and on the ridges you get glimpses of Lake of the Clouds.

Pretty hike and enough challenge but not too bad. Muddy if there’s been a lot of rain, bring extra shoes or shoes. I went in late August so could be buggy earlier in the season. Mirror Lake is gorgeous so well worth it.

Gorgeous view. Very steep uphill and a lot of stairs but a lot of benches to rest. In and out from the parking lot.

My dog and I took this route July 4/5th. Had a blast, but mosquitos were absolutely brutal and mud was pretty serious. Sometimes you gotta go through hell to get to heaven.

Awesome trail to hike and the waterfalls are gorgeous. One side of the trail has lots of ups/downs but has better spots for taking pictures. The other side of the trail is mainly boardwalk. Definitely worth checking this trail out if you’re visiting the Porcupine Mountains.

A mosquito paradise. Please wear protection and bring bug nets. The hike up is thick and boggy, very muddy, but there are logs and rocks in places to be able to maneuver through. After a few miles, the more uphill you get the more the bugs thin out. At the lake itself the bugs aren't bad at all, but through the marshy woods they are terrible, and my sisters got bit so many times, the next day their faces swelled to the point that they were unrecognizable. The lake is peaceful and serene, birding was enjoyed, and listening to the loon calls echo off the water into the night was like a scene from a movie. Overall, I think the lake is worth the hike and for me, I was so distracted by trying to escape all the mosquitoes, that the elevation gain went unnoticeable as I was practically running and rock hopping through the woods.

Hiked in mid May to camp at site 1. So worth it! Great views. Challenging hills.

Great for beginners

Amazing views!

Definitely pack smart for this hike. Bring snacks and lots of water. The elevation changes and rocky terrain make this hike challenging! For a great view and less exhaustion, start the trail by the old mine shaft (picnic area). It cuts the hike in about half for those, like myself, without hiking poles or tough footwear.

It was interesting to read about the history of mining in the area. Decent hike.

This loop map is incomplete! This only shows the road and the West river trail. There is a matching East river trail on the other side that is definitely worth the hike! Refer to the paper maps passed out at the entrance to see both loops. I highly recommend going North (toward the lake) for the East Trail. It has some very steep embankments that would have been torture to climb up but were okay to go down ;) Lots of stairs and boardwalks on the West river side, more rustic on the East side.

This trail is awesome. Some sections have loose rock but it’s not exceedingly challenging. Bring lots of water and if you have trekking poles, bring them. Great views. Would love to go again at sunrise/sunset.

1) this map doesn’t show there is an east and west trail. Make sure to do both sides of the river. 2) they give you a paper map at the entrance which shows the east trail. 3) start with the west trail to learn about the waterfalls.

Very informative and interesting trail. Feels longer than a mile but worth the effort.

I have hiked this trail a few times, different times of the yr. muddy sometimes, cold sometimes, hot sometimes but that what I love about hiking the UP, Unpredictable weather, solitude and amazing views.
