We hiked this the first weekend of October just after a massive rain storm. Trail was super muddy (suck-your-shoes-off muddy in some parts) and a lot of roots (watch your step!). Had no issues with bugs and it was great temp, beautiful leaves changing colors. We had the lake to ourselves! Definitely recommend.

Solid trail and easily navigated. Some moderate inclines. We only hiked to Buckshot Cabin and back. Weather was excellent for October and allowed for great views above Lake Superior.

Awesome hike. We started at the Lake of the Clouds parking area which kind of spoils the view right away but the views change quite dramatically as you start moving east and you definitely get away from the crowds. It is a lot of uphill and downhill but if you are starting from Lake of the Clouds trailhead, you don't have to go all the way to the other parking area to turn around. You can turn around at Cuyahoga Peak which shortens the trail dramatically and cuts off quite a bit of elevation. If you wanted a bit more of a challenge and want to be rewarded for your hard work, start at the Government Peak trailhead, hike up to Cuyahoga Peak and continue onward to the Lake of the Clouds overlook at the very end before turning around. That guarantees the full 8.6+ miles and 1,800 feet elevation gain and you won't spoil the view right away. It's definitely a lot of distance to cover but overall it only took about 4 hours to do 8 miles starting from the Lake of the Clouds trailhead and hiking a little past Cuyahoga Peak. I wouldn't really rate this as "hard." It was more the challenging end of "moderate." It is very gorgeous this time of year with the fall leaves. It definitely seems like the best hiking option in the Porkies.

Muddy hike but well worth it! Views along the way were beautiful. We left our bikes at Lost Creek Outpost and hiked from 107 to the South Boundary Road. The bike ride back to our vehicle on 107 was MOSTLY downhill.

Trail was somewhat muddy in spots, but not enough to turn us back. We are in good shape but found the middle section a pretty rigorous climb. Definitely used our poles. We did an out and back. If staying at one of the cabins, try hiking in from the south side as this would have been tough with heavy backpacks.. . All in all, beautiful area for hiking.

This hike was challenging but so worth it. We went the day after a good rain fall much of the trail was muddy, for sure wear water proof shoes.

Hiked from south boundary road up east side and back west side. Forgot to turn off recording till after we got on car. Petty falls and rapids from both sides. Crossing at lake side was across east branch of river. Couldn’t do this in spring.

Well-marked trail. No real surprises with the view if you’re starting at Lake of the Clouds, but beautiful nonetheless. Rained the night before, a little muddy/slippery but doable. Took 50 minutes to get to the bluff at the 2 mile mark. I opted to turn around here and not hike the full trail. Some ups and downs but not too difficult.

Magnificent view! Thx Bruce

Spectacular! Hiked both sides of the river. Your BEST pictures will be from the east side. Most of the falls slightly face the east. Not as good of views from the west , boardwalk side. I was a little surprised at that. East side is difficult in spots. If time is limited I highly recommend this one and the Escarpment Trail. I so want to come back and hike this again! Thx Bruce

Magnificent! Did the 4 miles out and back. Amazing views from along the ridge line. Highly recommend. Thx Bruce

The falls are beautiful but you get a better view if you don’t follow this route but continue on by the river. It’s not really a loop, either, unless you want to walk along the road for half of it!

Sometimes great. Starting from the lot on the west side, there's that vibe where the authorities want you to enjoy nature, just not TOO much. Everything is boardwalks and fences and stairs. It's more intimate both upstream and across the bridge. For the best short hike cross the bridge right away and explore the island.

Fantastic. Excellent views. Everything a hiking trail should be. Fall colors starting already before Labor Day. Plenty of people, especially on the west end...but everybody is having a good time, friendly and happy.

Beautiful but challenging! We shaved a bit to save our knees but still had plenty of climbs!

Guess this is "hard" for Michigan, but it's more moderate than anything. The hardest part is that it's 8.2 miles and probably about 8.6 overall if you're going to the Lake of the Clouds outlook. Otherwise, up and down, great views, solid trail.
