Great trail with some nice hills to add a little challenge. Really beautiful and peaceful - I think I passed maybe three other hikers on this loop on a Saturday morning. It did throw me a bit when I ended up on what felt like a pretty long stretch on a dirt road. I'm still not convinced I didn't miss a sign to get back on the trail more quickly but ultimately I did end up back on the trail (there were stairs leading up to the trail on the left hand side of the road). I will definitely do this hike again!

Great 5 mile loop in the state park. Used to run this one all the time and the hills are tough but great. No better feeling than flying down one of the hills either. Challenging, but totally worthwhile and lovely scenery.

on Penosha Trail

Beautiful nature trail through the woods - a small part goes through a meadow and another along a dirt road. No mountain bikers on this trail, they have their own. On a Friday afternoon we passed ten other hikers. There are about six benches along the route and most of them are between markers 7 and 10. Good footwear is a must. We hiked this trail in just under 2 hours. We will be back :)

This is a harder “moderate trail. Lots of climbs and sharp turns to keep you on your toes and out of your seat.

Very nice trail. It was almost entirely covered with trees. 4.5 miles didn't feel like it. Moderate elevations along the way. I would definitely come back.

A very solid moderate trail for starters. I was also surprised how hilly it was compared to how flat Michigan is. Benches and markers on trail.

Good hike with kids!

I went here to hike the 12 mile loop but it was for mountain bikers mostly and didn’t want to get run over. However, this trail is quite the gem! I started around 9:45am and there wasn’t many people. Very quiet walk and absolutely beautiful trees and scenery. The trail was also mostly completed shaded! I will be back.

Did the Penosha and Kahchin trails a couple days ago. Well marked, get paper maps at the gate. All trails start off the parking lot at Bishop Lake. Very few bugs on the day I went, using a basic low-Deet bugspray. Looks like the previously eroded areas others mentioned have been reinforced with rubber [recycled tires?] gradations to prevent future erosion. Saw a few people on the Penosha nearer to the far parking area, but otherwise it was quiet. Great hike in a wooded area. There is a paved half-loop around Bishop Lake that was very scenic. Swimming area at the lake if you plan to cool off afterwards.

Good hike! A lot of sites to see, also a nice lake in the area. Will visit again!

Great trail, very quiet and great for a family hike.

Great trail with young and old tree growth.

Nice hike.

Great trail, well groomed!

very pretty. moderate hills are a challenge.

One of our favorite hikes 5 miles in 90 minutes. Take that step counters! :)

Great trail to run with no bikes. Ran the hiking trail around noon on a Friday. Only saw 4 people. Colors were pretty good. Really scenic.

I did Kahchin immediately after completing Penosha - the woods were so pretty today. Shout out to Greg Tasker and his 5-star trails of Ann Arbor & Detroit ( for convincing me to come to BSRA for fall color. The trails were very busy today, saw 30 or so others on the trails. Trails were in great shape.

Shout out to Greg Tasker and his 5-star trails of Ann Arbor & Detroit ( for convincing me to come to BSRA for fall color - Penosha was beautiful today. Even the boring back section on the road was pretty. The woods were so nice, I had to turn around and do the Kahchin right after the Penosha. The trails were very busy today, saw 30 or so others on the trails.
As always, the trails were in great shape, nice amount of up and down. Very pleasant afternoon.

Trails in great shape and well marked. Fairly flat easy hike. We'll do it again

A nice change of pace from other trails around but not much to see. Scenery is mostly the same throughout, but it's a decent 5 mile loop if you are from the area. I wouldn't drive from out of the area to check this one off your list.

Well marked trails. The day we went it was very humid and hence very buggy. Our morning was cut short because some where we missed a turn that would have given us the full 12 miles

Use this trail to get in shape

Nice trail(s) - I did both the Kahchin and Penosha, to get about 6.5 miles. The far part of Penosha, on the road, isn't particularly thrilling, but the rest is a nice walk in the woods. Nice little hills, the trail was in generally excellent condition, shout out to the maintenance crew. I did see one hunter walking through the woods with his gun (this was in late September '16), but didn't hear any shots :-)

Great trail, plenty of challenge for us old guys. In spite of torrential down pours the last two weeks the trail was dry.

The trail is nice and mostly flat, hills are not that big or steep. The walk was nice and scenery will be even better come spring.

Nice walk in a Michigan woods. The back part of Penosha, along Teahen road, is unfortunate, but that is just a short bit of the trail. If you just want the scenery, and some nice hills, do the 2-mile Kahchin; if you want more of the same (pretty) woods, but more miles and a few more hills, do Penosha. Neither trail, nor the combined set, is hard; these are at most moderate (I'm 58, in decent shape). Minimal wildlife observed. The trail is quite well maintained, is sandy in some stretches, packed dirt elsewhere, some erosion, rocks, or roots lots of places - a nice woods trail.

do this one quite often, my dog loves the up down-up down slopes, as do i.
I'd make sure you've got pretty good shoes on, this trail isn't for half way go'ers!

Good hike if you're looking for a couple of hours and some decently challenging terrain. Decent variation of scenery.
