Open year-round, dawn to dusk. The Middlesex Fells Reservation's 2,575 acres offer a welcome retreat for city dwellers and a suitable terrain for hikers, horseback riders, rock climbers, cross-country skiers and picnickers as well as natural and cultural history buffs. "Fells" is the Saxon word for rocky, hilly tracts of land - an apt name for this scenic area which is rich in local history. This picturesque area was once favored for timber, granite quarrying, ice industry, and water power for the many mills including one that manufactured some of the first vulcanized rubber products. The Botume House at 4 Woodland Road is the Middlesex Fells Headquarters and will soon house the Middlesex Fells Visitor Center. Special features for visitors include the Sheepfold picnic area, Bellevue Pond, Virginia Wood, and Spot Pond. The Sheepfold is 10 acres of open field, ideal for picnics, frisbee playing and informal games. Bellevue Pond is a seasonal pond surrounded by trails and wide fire roads, some leading up to Wrights Tower which looks out over the Boston Basin. Virginia Wood, the site of a vanished mill village called "Haywardville" is now a dense hemlock enclave.

Went for run on Saturday AM. Trail was very beautiful even though ground was covered by full of ice some of area. recommend to bring phone or map to navigate your location. May unleashed dogs, I love dogs but it was really scary to see him(or her) barking at me on my back all the sudden.

Use it for training for summit ridge hiking. Too many dogs and cyclists, though.

Good location, fun series of hills with good views. Took ~2 hours or less to complete.

Markings could be better and trails maps located in the parking lot would be helpful. Trail contained some nice views.

Fun trail! The start from Bellevue pond could use better signage...

Middlesex fells is super convenient to the city and is very beautiful.

Great property, wish I lived closer. Decided to "peakbag" as many of the hills as possible. Started clockwise across the North Reservoir dam to Bear Hill (climbed the lookout tower) then over to Winthrop before witnessing a wonderful engagement proposal on the ledge near Wanapanaquin Hill. That was really sweet, took some pix for them as the lighting was perfect! Turned south from there to Gerry Hill then across the dog play area to a series of no-name hills before returning to car. A bit of bushwacking on this trek but it was easy. Lovely all around!

Markings could be better.

Great property, wish I was closer. Will be back!

I took another hike in mid fall hoping to catch some more nice late fall foliage and was not dissapointed. It's an easy walk but rewarding esp in a warm sunny November day and with all the colors of fall still around. I like how pretty these berry trees along the path, I don't know the name but they're quite picturesque.

Very beautiful reservoir! Lots of different trail options so you can really personalize how you want to hike. The only reason this isn’t 5 stars is that parking was tricky, some trails didn’t have the best markings and a big part of it was supposed to be off limits but it was really unclear where and those areas seemed to be just as crowded as everywhere else. But I absolutely want to go back and do more exploring, it was a truly beautiful area!

A nice short and fairly interesting trail. I took the side trail to Wright's Pond for a side sight seeing trip. Quarter Mile pond's fall foliage is absolutely beautiful esp from Woodland Road's trail. The fall foliage from Spot Pond is nice as well esp of Great Island in the middle of Spot Pond.

The view from the trail is pretty picturesque with a variety of things to see. I hike a bit too late in the evening today so I will have to return tomorrow earlier so I have more time to soak in the scenery.

Went here with a 9 and 3 year old hoping for an easy path- there were too many places that the 3 year could not handle. Great trail, had to stop 1/4 of the way and turn back bc kids got tired.

Will definitely come back, sans kids.

Very easy trail if you hike like we do.

Many of the paths are overgrown with thorns!!

Many of the paths are poorly marked and could be quite confusing if you don’t pay attention.

Gorgeous! Highly recommend.

Would have probably been more fun going clockwise, but great trails. Easy to feel lost in nature right outside a city.

Not really hiking. A nice walk around the lake.

Very good place near Boston for a 3 hour hike, especially when you walk around the lakes closer to the water. The only issue was that we had to check with map literally every 5 minutes as this trail is a mix of various other trails and routes. This was a little inconvenient and did not allow us to completely relax and enjoy the hike. We even got lost a couple of times, so pay attention to the trail that you follow. . Honestly I have no idea how people can hike here without a map or app with tracker, it’s very easy to get lost:)

Mountain biking trails aren’t marked too well. A good ride with some challenges. Will definitely do it again.

Good place for hiking, but it’s never considered as Hard, Moderate at most.

Overly complicated. Can get lost easily since the marks are not easily visible. You will hear road noise a lot as well.

Nice, peaceful hike. Not strenuous but the mileage makes it a good hike.

Well marked trails. Not really hiking yet not really a simple flat walk. I would say it’s on the high end of easy to the very low end of moderate. It was very nice but I have similar walks closer to my home so I personally wouldn’t go out of my way to go again.

This is a great trail for running as it varies in difficulty as you go. There are some flat, easy spots but there are also some areas with rocks and roots that you have to dodge as you run up and downhill. Highly recommended!

I've hiked this trail several times. It is a short and easy hike to do but other than Long Pond, there isn't much to see. Last time I hike it was in fall for fall foliage so it was one of my more interesting hike.

This is one of the most scenic trail in the Middlesex Fells Reservation especially on the eastern side of the loop. The sunset from here is pretty spectacular as I've had a chance to catch a few. It is worth it to do the loop at the bulge at the top of the trail and extend the loop to over 3 miles. The tip of the bulge is quick scenic looking southward over South Reservoir.

Conveniently close to the city. Started at Bellevue pond and was able to pick up a map at the trail head- very helpful! Trail markers were mostly visible. however a few times I had to really search for them, but they were there. Good up and down mix. Definitely recommend. Was able to finish in 3.5 hrs.
