Hiking

Great forest with beautiful tall pines. At the start, you feel like you’re in a couple backyards, but the rest of the time, it’s pretty secluded. There are a couple bridges and boardwalks and changes of scenery. We spotted 3 snakes on our June hike. The 3 miles went by quickly here.

This section of the Desert Natural Area seems a little less frequented than other access points. There's space for about 5-6 cars in the lot, and there was only one other vehicle parked there when we started. The trail is mostly flat and moderately shaded. A small body of water on the Witches Cove Trail is good for cooling off dogs in the hotter months.

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon there were all of two people on the trail. Great hike in the woods. The only issue is the intersections were not well marked. And the one map on the trail was not helpful.

This is a gorgeous and well-maintained trail that keeps you in stands of tall pine throughout the hike. The path is wide and level. There are several nice boardwalks along the way that allow views of the surrounding wetlands. It's a great place to get in some wildlife viewing - saw a turtle, a few orioles, and even two nonvenomous snakes to the side of the trail. The trail looks ideal for bringing kids for a family walk. Bring some bug spray during the warmer months. The parking lot fits about 8 cars, so you might want to get there early for a spot.

Well maintained trails. Mostly woodsy. Some areas open and exposed to sun. Not many bugs yet. Kind of boring, even for the woods, so four stars instead of five.

Perfect spot if you are looking for low key with lots of options. We saw maybe 6 people, which in COVID world was ideal. Good bird watching and we saw a lot of lady slippers.

Crowded for Covid times on a warm morning. Maybe 2 dozen people. Lovely trail, otherwise.

Some parts of the trail are flooded out right now, but really pleasant walk and not crowded at all!

Was a good trail but definitely wish I had snow shoes today. when the snow is 6+ inches like it was today they definitely would have helped.

This is a nice walk. Can get very buggy and muddy sometimes. Overall great walk in the woods.

Fairly overgrown in spots with swarms of gnats. Will revisit during cooler temps

Love the woods on the midsection of this trail: tall, stately pines with very little under story. Dog friendly - leashes required at stream-crossings.

On the day we took this trail there was still too much ice to make it enjoyable. Can’t wait to explore here when the thaw comes. Great birds.

I did this in the winter when the whole thing was snowy. It was easy enough and pretty in the snow, and it wasn’t hard to keep to the trail. But there really wasn’t much to see but houses so that was kind of a bummer :-(

Easy hike with well marked trails. I shared the trail only with a flock of wild turkeys. There were many fresh deer tracks and the old stone border walls Massachusetts is known for. The summit doesn’t offer much in views, but at the top sits an amazingly big, old Maple tree.

Very nice hike. The trails are wide and very well maintained, they traverse though nice wetlands, old growth pines and open pitch pine forest. The trails don’t have signs with names, so It can be a little tricky to navigate the area. Also, the Plymton trail has one section where water has overflowed onto the trail, it is not deep but it can soak a good pair of shoes.

This hike is one of those urban gems - the chance to feel like you're in deep woods while you're in the center of an urbanized area. Added bonus is the loop to the summit of Mt. Ward, really just a large hill, which gives you some elevation gain for extra exercise, and has a pleasant bench under a curious-looking old maple tree at its summit. This version of the trail starts and ends from a nice little parking area with a trailhead map station. You'll find the trailhead parking on the driveway just to the left of the Alltop Mobile gas station on Rt. 20 (Boston Post Road) across from The Home Depot and Dunkin Donuts.
