"A man may stand there and put all America behind him." Henry David Thoreau The great Outer Beach described by Thoreau in the 1800s is protected within the national seashore. Forty miles of pristine sandy beach, marshes, ponds, and uplands support diverse species. Lighthouses, cultural landscapes, and wild cranberry bogs offer a glimpse of Cape Cod's past and continuing ways of life. Swimming beaches and walking and biking trails beckon today's visitors.

This past Monday, we drove over to this trail from Orleans only to find out the trail was actually closed to dogs. You probably want to investigate a little more before you head over.

Although opinions about this hike's difficulty vary, it should not be rated as "easy", which is the current rating. Indeed, any review of this hike owes it to members to comment on the elevated risk of severe injury that this hike presents. It should be rated as no easier than moderate. At the beginning of the breakwater, over which hikers traverse to get to Long Point, there is a warning posted by the National Park Service. It explains that the junctions between the huge granite boulders that form the jetty are not evenly placed in distance from one another, nor on the same plane. Going from one to the next, I stumbled more than once. There is a not insignificant risk that a bad stumble could result in a fall, causing a bad scrape, a broken bone, or worse. The views are spectacular, as a number of commenters have said, but if traverse the breakwater looking at the view, you substantially increase your risk of a serious fall. This is not a hike for people who are weak or out of condition.

no shade

Excellent trail ,great workout, beautiful vista s,beautiful ending at the ocean ,giant sand bowls. Shade is scarce so bring wide brim hat or small umbrella. Best to go before sun gets too high 6 - 9 am. Easy to loose trail on return so constantly look back on the way in to identify return trail. Or use gps or compass. All trails app is good. Better traction with sneakers. Bare feet feels good but sand is hot and traction is poor. Also bring a couple bottles of water and sun glasses. Definitely don,t go if you have medical problems. Climbs are strenuous

nauset Marsh trail to coast guard beach to Doane rock

Moderate to east terrain in pine forests and a nice Pine needle base. Parts are a little overgrown so tick repellent is advised. Mostly shady with 2 short road walks.

Overgrown, you end at the top of the dunes, decent view but you can’t get to the beach. Severe erosion at the end of trail makes the viewpoint s hazard.

absolutely stunning coast line. fun to play in the water

Nice short easy hike that leads to a beautiful beach with seals.

Best trail on cape. Make sure you go out during low tide. As the trail will extend

Realy beautiful, easy trail.

A relatively short walk to the boardwalk thru the swamp and that “Jurassic Park feeling”. Time the day and weather right to avoid the mosquitos which could ruin the experience. If you get caught in a swarm just pick up the pace and jog about ten quick steps to break away from your co2 trail.

Amazing trail through the dunes. highly recommend hiking through barefoot if it's not too hot!

One of the most peaceful beautiful “walks” you could find. A gentle “walk” as apposed to any kind of strenuous hike. Bird life abounds in season! Although you’re only a short distance from the hustle and bustle of the main thoroughfare — you feel like you’re alone in nature.

Do not hike up Higgins Hollow Road toward camera icon on map for view or picture. There is no view. Trails are not maintained, overgrown and impassable. Stay south of start of Higgins and towards ocean for best views. 3 stars for lack of maintenance. 5 stars if you stay south of Higgins

Bring mosquito spray or you will DIE!!!!!

very beautiful view of the marshes. Easy trail to walk.

Very scenic hike along boardwalks in the swamp, the swarming mosquitos biting us continually despite our bug spray reduced my rating, we were there June 4.

Beautiful short hike with trees, beach and cove. A nice one for the family.

Very rewarding experience. The hike and bike trail to Coast Guard beach is not serene: beware the mad cap bike racers who could care less about the view. The Naucet Marsh trail is very nice and reasonably well marked.

Gentle inclines. Peat bog ponds are so black. Pretty cool.

Spectacular hike. Windswept pines, wild blueberry, bayberry, pink lady slipper orchid, seals, pipers, wild roses, various lichens and mosses. Not to be missed. Not too easy.

Great scenery trail, easy to hike with kids. We walked on the beach first and when back by the woods. It was nice to watch some seals bathing near the shore. The kids enjoyed to watch all the small crabs hiding in holes almost all along the way. We also saw some dead animals, two dolphins et few ducks.

This is absolutely horrible. Nothing is marked. We followed the app the entire time which let us onto private property and we got yelled at for trespassing. So apparently this is not a loop trail because you need to tresspass to do so. Whoever maintains these maps should update this listing. We ended up wading through water just to get back to the beginning after the older gentleman allowed us to trespass on his property.

Beautiful views. Very rewarding trail. Warning for animal lovers. We encountered a few dead dolphins and seals along the way.

Amazing! Well paved and very HILLY bike trail through the dunes and forests of the National Seashore. Not easy on a bike if you’re a beginner. Park at Race Point Beach and use the (cold) showers before heading into town for dinner / drinks and shopping.
