This is a great trail in the Loch Raven watershed for getting an industrial workout. The main loop is around 2.6 miles, but can be easily extended by adding on adjacent loops. This trail has some of the longest grades of the various Loch Raven trails. Some of the spurs down to Loch Raven on the back side of the loop are very steep, and hikers would benefit from poles. All in all, a tremendous workout with beautiful vistas of Loch Raven.

SKIP THE LOOP. The straight line into the resovior and back is great. The loop off the trail was completely gone, unmarked, and full of downed trees and burrs... ouch.

Easy traveling, this is my go-to trail for riding. Beautiful scenery and plenty of stopd, if needed. Sometimes gets a bit crowded but always enjoyable.

Fun little loop trail that is surprisingly not busy on the weekends. Be aware of where you are when going through the section under the power lines because the trail turns and isn't marked (but is apparent if you are looking at the trail map on here). If you follow the trail you are on there, it takes you on a side loop trail that adds a little distance to the hike.

This trail name is wrong. The correct name is Dead Man's Cove trail. There is no cave, though there is a sinkhole as well as some long-buried kiln activity. Before the reservoir was created, the hill coming down what is now 146/Jarrettsville Pike was known as Dead Man's Hill. The cove that this hike goes along eventually took that hill's name after the current bridge was built and the road made more safe. This is one of my local hikes and I really enjoy both the trails and bushwhacking around the shore, where much beaver activity can sometimes be seen.

Very, very nice trail

We took this trail today and it was ok. There are sections that have been clearly worn that go to the lake, the loop on the map goes into paths that are not there, overgrown so many briars. We should have just stayed on the well worn areas because trying to get a five year old and dog through the briars was awful. If we go back it's to the lake and out. We tried the recorder but had to turn it off as we started to run out of battery. There isn't a parking lot just a pull off of the road to park at a little ways down from where the map shows the trail head being.

Quiet on a weekday midday. Nice people, nice dogs, but only a few. Silence, no wind, no birds, no squirrels, but strong sunshine. Easy trail.

Love taking my dog here. Never gets as busy as other nearby parks can.

This was a 7-mile outing as a recovery activity, after a super-hilly 11.5 mi run the day before. I hiked at 4.3 mph (13:57 min/mi), on the North Central Railroad Trail, starting northward from the Monkton trailhead, turning around at Wiseburg Rd/Schoolhouse Rd, in GFSP. However, I took two pics, and recorded only 1.3 mi of this activity — the 25F weather led me to turn the GPS off and focus on the hike. This is an awesome trail and I will be returning.

Awesome set of trails through some beautiful nature. Lots of mountain bikers. Not too many people, even on a Saturday.

Fun and challenging with a few short areas where you have to walk your bike because it’s too steep

Nice easy trail with gorgeous views of the Loch Raven Reservoir. We backtracked a bit near the end to add some extra time. This will definitely become one of our go-to quick weekday hikes.

It's an easy hike/ but not well used and overgrown. My dogs got a lot of burrs that were hard to remove, however, if more people used the trail, I think it would be a quick hike to a beautiful spot!

This is a very scenic ride with some rarely noticeable elevation. The trail is in good shape, mostly dual track with some areas that narrow, making it hard to pass. The mileage is well marked and accurate, making it easy to create a loop of any length. The trail has light traffic during weekdays, but can get very heavy on the weekends.

Very nice gravel trail to bike. Trailhead can be accessed in a neighborhood but the main parking lot is at mile marker .03 which is no big deal. Best to start early in the day as it can be fairly packed late morning or afternoon.

This is not a well marked trail to make it a loop. It's an out and back section of the NCR trail. Very disappointed it is not a hiking path more of a biking/run/walk.

0/10 No cave

This was the first "real" trail I hiked back in 1999 and it kicked my butt, but it also made me fall in love with hiking. I come back often and would categorize it as easy. On weekends when the road is closed, most foot traffic is on the road, not the trails, but parking can be tricky.

On the part of the trail closest to the bridge, there is a side trail that adds distance and some small hills. It loops back into this trail near the road. It's pretty easy to spot the trail but it's not marked.

Love love this trail. Great for everything. Biking, walking or running. Family & pet friendly. It's a flat dirt trail. The Gunpowder River runs along side of it. Things to see at different areas along the way!

Beautiful area!

Depending on the day, you can have a really relaxing walk or a nearly stressful jaunt with too many bikers, dogs, and kids.

My boyfriend and I spent an enjoyable Monday afternoon meandering along this trail. We easily found parking, but had it been a nicer day on a weekend, it may have been trickier. We caught some views of the waterfront as the foliage has not yet filled in for the spring season. It was an easy, dry walk, but recent rainfall would make this trail quite muddy. I would revisit this trail to do some running or even just to get out of the house for fresh air. This was a very relaxing way to spend my day.

The trail is extremely crowded which makes it difficult to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

Great trail, didn't think it was moderate though, on the easier side. Very friendly people. Lots of families with small children down by the water.

Beautiful setting but the state of MD is letting this jewel go rusty. For biking the trail has deteriorated over the past few years. Very bumpy, and the latest insult is the fact that they dug it up for gas lines and did not restore the trail to a decent shape. I hope some maintenance can be done on the trail
