First time in Gambrill State Park. Really enjoyed it. Rain made rocks on part of the trail a little slippery, but other than that it was what I expected.

Nice trail....very enjoyable.

Entering the trail from the right of the parking area is a rocky downhill hike. Beginners like my husband and I benefited from using trekking poles. The second half of the loop heading back up to the left side of the parking area is much smoother.

Fun, challenging, remote trail. Was only able to do the southernmost section by Gambrill State Park. Would definitely complete more of this trail, especially when it's not a blizzard.

Nice hike on a warm winter day. We got a pretty good workout in and saw some cool views (we were able to see pretty far as most of the trees had lost their leaves).

Not much to see and a lot of it is by the road. I'm sure in the summer with the leaf cover it seems more secluded and quiet but the car noise cut down on the quiet during my warm January day hike. The trail is very rocky too so you spend a lot of time on foot placement/focus looking down. I did this with a 30lb weight best so that tended to make the hike more of a workout so keep that in mind with this review. What made this challenging was the sheer rockiness of the path. I don't think I'll try this one again soon but it's worth a hike for sure.

My husband and I randomly decided at 10am that we wanted to go for a good hike but still be done in time to get the kids from school. We got to the trail head around 11am. We took our time and made frequent stops to just enjoy nature. We were done by noon. Even with stops it was about an hour and very enjoyable. We’ll definitely bring the dog next time but it’s a little too rocky for our 4yo to hike without constantly tripping. Great for big kids, adults, and a sturdy dog

Beautiful trail not too many people!! I was able to let my dog off leash to run around. I’m somebody who gets scared of animals but I did not see any on the trail though. Before walking into the trail there was a sign of snakes and black bears so I got nervous but I felt very safe hiking alone with my dog!

Great views! However it is more challenging than moderate with the rocks - especially the downhill after 1.2 miles . It can be tricky with fall leaves covering the rocks.

Perfect distance and good cardio!

A good bit of up and down. Couple of nice look-outs.

Easy/moderate trail with upper and lower loops. Follows close to the road for some of the trail, but otherwise good seclusion. Loved the frequent change in plant life as we looped around to different faces of the mountain. Very peaceful all around and worth making the trip for.

This is a local trail for me and I hike it all the time. I found a ten dollar bill on this trail last fall! It's a great trail. I hike it counterclockwise. It does up and down quite a bit but not too steep. Very easy to hike - good for kids. There was a small fire here a few years back and there is evidence of it on the right when you are going up after the split. After that there is a spring with fresh mountain water to fill up your bottle or water your dog. At the top there is a look-out overlooking the north side of Frederick city and Fort Detrick. This portion of the trail runs beside the road - that is why I docked one star. Other than that this is a great trail - especially if you take the Black Trail from the top for the wide loop.

got a bit lost. the park labels both an upper and lower yellow trail

Nice - I like the overlap with the black trail as well. Forgot to record my hike lol.

We got a bit lost, and ended up accidentally following the green trail for a bit, but the black was easy enough to get back on to, and the maps were very accurate. I think we missed some overlooks as a result. :(

Being a beginner this trail kicked my butt when doing the steep inclines! I've done other trails marked moderate and this trail was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I was having a good time until those hills! I think I definitely need to lower myself to easy for a bit until I build my stamina!

This trail is a little bit harder then they describe it, however it's manageable be ready to let your dog stop for water breaks if you go in the summer! beautiful veiws, a very relaxing hike, and the most rewarding view is at the top of course! this trail seems longer then 2 miles and the hills are long, yet once you get to the top it's a easy loop back down making a great workout. My dog loved it..i went way to late though and had a nice park ranger help me back to my car! if you want to watch the sunset like I had planned get there at 7:30 or 8:00pm! so rewarding to hike. Also they saw a bear yesterday, so amazing to think this is so close to my home!

Nice hike

The trail was nice but it is way too close to the road for a good portion of it. The upper part of the trail was the best part.

Hundreds of Mountain Laurel are blooming. The ferns are so beautiful. Go now, before the blooms are gone!

Lots of road noise for 50-60% of the hike. It's right by the road. Cars won't bug you but there's no escaping the motorcycles dragging out the low gears. It would be better when it's not riding season. Trail feels isolated the rest of the time and is quite rocky. I would rate it easy if not for the rockiness.

3.1 miles total for the Black Locust Trail. Few spots are tough to run due to incline, but overall a moderate run.

fun hike, and great scenery! some of the rocky parts are a bit tricky due to the rocks being small and loose, but over all alot of fun!

Is this trail 2.9 miles or 2.0 miles? The trail guide in the parking lot said it was 2 miles. But that would explain why it took me 1 hour and 15 min to hike through. I did the whole loop, moderately challenging, good ups and downs. I just don't like that you have to walk along a road for a portion of the trail. Otherwise I am definitely doing it again!
