Fair Hill is a 5,633 acre Natural Resources Management Area, where multiple management practices are employed for the maximum use and protection of Maryland's natural resources. Bordered by Pennsylvania to the north and less than one half mile west of Delaware, Fair Hill is known for its pristine fields, woodlands and natural beauty. At one time one of the largest private land holdings in the East, Fair Hill was formerly owned by William duPont, Jr., an avid equestrian who acquired the farmland as a means to enjoying riding as well as fox chasing. Fair Hill was purchased by the state in 1975 from Mr. duPont's estate. Fair Hill's attractions include the turf course, where steeplechase, timber course and flat races are held Memorial Day weekend with pari-mutuel wagering (www.fairhillraces.org). A pavilion is situated near the historic, rustic covered bridge where visitors frequently stop for picnic lunches. The fairgrounds host the annual Cecil County Fair where some 80,000 visitors attend the weeklong event (www.cecilcountyfair.org). Also located at the fairgrounds is the Edward L. Walls Activity Hall, with a capacity of 350 people. It includes kitchen and restroom facilities, and is available to rent for functions which further the mission of the Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service or the local agricultural community. Fair Hill is open dawn to dusk.

Very nice trail through the woods. Quite a bit of a hike but not difficult at all. Active horseback riding trail so watch out for the droppings. Mix of wooded and field trail spots but majority in the woods. Well marked with orange markers. Overall a nice hike.

Some nice stretches in the woods in a fairly built-up area.

Great trail and well marked except for a short section around the nature center. Nice varied terrain with good Hill sections and a short section of open fields. Trail was pretty quiet saw a few mountain bikers and only two other hiking groups. All in all a great afternoon walk. Highly recommend.

Really nice, well mostly forest loop trail with beautiful scenery and some decent elevation. I had no trouble following the orange blazes, but there were a couple of places that could have been marked better especially near the covered bridge and Nature Center. Hiked counter clockwise starting at the access trail near the sunken bridge. Saw a decent number of mountain bikes and horses and only one other hiking group. Most of the trail is marked multi purpose but many sections are for hikers and bikers only....equestrians seem to be ignoring signs in these areas since I found lots of "land mines" where there shouldn't have been any.

So fun! Until the end... I didn’t take the recommended trail and the last two miles exhausted me. In a good way

Every time I try a new trail, it becomes my favorite. This is a great trail and at the moment it’s my favorite, Until next week of course...;-) The trail is a fantastic ride. It has an even amount of ups and downs as oppose to quick down hill with long up hill travel. Some spots are very narrow and curvy which adds to the fun. There are a ton of trails and one of the best features is throughout all the trails, they all circle back to a main in & our road. So if you’re too tired, you can leave. And if you’re still fearing to go, take another trail off the main road. We had an absolute blast and I highly recommend the trail. If you look at our recording, you’ll see we didn’t take the normal route. We just had fun and took random trails throughout. I really recommend this as it’s so much more fun. One caveat, Take a phone or gps. There are so many trails, it’s easy to get lost.

Nice trail. Nothing steep but a long steady ascent out (clockwise). 95% in the woods. A couple swimming holes available. Not a ton of scenery but the creek is pretty nice.

This may be my new favorite trail. This is the first time I’ve run this and but it’s pretty awesome. There aren’t a lot of jumps and things but this is a true mountain bike trail. It’s easy as far as experience goes but it’s an exhausting ride with the constant up and down. Be sure to watch out for the horse droppings if you run this line, it’s very prevalent throughout. Super fun and super exhausting.

Lots of gravel carriage paths so if you are walking with dogs or on horseback, not ideal for sensitive paws and hooves. I’m not sure I agree with the moderate rating. I would rate this easy. It’s mostly flat with a few minor grades but nothing strenuous. There were a few black flies but overall not too buggy. It was about 72 and slightly humid.

Nice variation of terrain. Well marked except at the covered bridge. Go straight across the road and slightly to the right, not directly next to the river.

Did the green trail both CW and CCW. Easy to moderate

Great mix of carriage roads in & out, with mostly single track hiking trails through the woods. Some nifty stone ruins and streams along the way. Would benefit from better trail markings.

This trail was amazing! Definitely challenging and wouldnt recommend to the novice hiker. It was peaceful, serene, and hardly saw anyone else on the trail. There are a few spots that aren't clearly marked so we spent a little extra time making sure we were going the right way. But overall, I'd definitely enjoyed it!!

I hated this trail. Too much high grass field for me.

First time here. Note to self, come earlier in the day so you can enjoy more of the trails. We cut the ride short because it was getting dark. The trails are marked well once you get used to the trail markers. Our parks in DE use a different marking system, but honestly this made perfect sense to me. Hope to come back soon. Was a great work out. Also note to self - park at the covered bridge parking area. There were more people there. It seems safer. There was a warning sign at the 273 parking area that there were thefts reported there. Oh and remember to bring cash for the day use fee. $3 for MD residents $5 for non-residents.

look out for horse shit ;)

I really enjoyed this hike yesterday. It was ver muddy in places but I was able to find a way around it pretty easily. I was there very early. I saw, heard and smelled (lol skunk glad I didn’t see it) a lot of wildlife. It is well marked but in some places you have to be paying attention. This is definitely one of my favorites.

Beautiful trail. Well maintained. A few soft spots from the horses, but nothing crazy.

Our group did 3 miles of this today (time constraints) and it was very pretty and peaceful early in the AM. Keep your eyes open for big piles of horse waste, as lots of riders use these lovely trails. A couple of places could have been better marked, but we were with someone who knows the trail well so it wasnt an issue.

Very easy to get off the trail. This is not a moderate ride for mountain biking. Very rocky and hilly. Great ride though if you’re up for a challenge or are an experienced rider.
