Probably one of the best hikes for the area!! Crossing the road to get to the falls was a little precarious and some of the trail has stretches that run alongside the road unfortunately. It did have some fun challenges though and wolf rock was pretty cool to see! Definitely recommend doing it counterclockwise. I did also catch a woodpecker in action!!

Very nice people helping us get to know trials

I highly suggest to arrive early if you want to park where the AllTrails app takes you and park near the visitor's center. We got there around 9am on a Saturday and both lots were full. Fortunately, the park posted signs along the road that additional parking was available 1/2 mile up the road. The overflow parking brought us right to the trailhead. The trails are well marked and we took the trail to the vista counter clock wise. It was a bit more challenging going this route but definitely in the lower moderate scale for difficulty. The trail was heavily traffic today but well worth the trek.

Expected it to be more flat but had a good time.

I did this trail as a shakedown hike with my new backpacking gear. Made a reservation for 1 of the 2 shelters (equipped with outhouse and fire pit) that are located close to the halfway point. Perfect setup for this, or even just for a quick overnight trip. The trail has some moderate ups and downs, nothing to serious. Well marked trail. I loved the shelters. The surrounding trees are gorgeous and a little stream meanders behind the site. Leaves were not yet on the trees, so stargazing was possible and the sky was dark enough to see more than in town. I will definitely be back!

easy, well maintained trail that the whole family can do - there is even an option that is ADA accessible (parking along a road only w/ handicap passes & a flat boardwalk to a large observation area with benches) we went in early july and enjoyed the freshly ripened raspberries that surrounded the trail

Great hike. The has steep hills and rocky. Nice rock formations and scenic views.

Pretty easy hike. It only took me about 3.8 hours but it was worth the drive. views were cool and the waterfalls was a nice one.

Great Saturday morning hike. I wouldn’t call the loop a hard hike, maybe a medium hike.

Views weren’t great. the waterfall was nice, but wasn’t part of the extended loop

Lots of great lookouts along this trail. I would say hiking it normal and save Chimney Rock for last!

Great little hike around 1.1 miles. Great overlook. Gravel surface but groomed well. Little bit of Traffic as it is an easy one for the kiddos. 4 year old had a blast.

somehow it was about 9.5 miles, but great fall trail!

Great hike!!! I hike trail counter clockwise. Great are views from Chimney Rock, Wolf Rock, Thurmont Vista, Blue Ridge Summit, and Hog Rock. Also, great views of Cunningham Falls.

Family hike on a rainy, cold day. Really enjoyed the views although it was overcast. Only complaint is the slippery leaves and rocks that I should have expected. I think the hard rating must be due to the elevation changes. If we did it again, I would cut out the section to the ranger station. It follows the road and is not very scenic. It was well marked with opportunities to bail back to the parking lot.

Had the trail to myself on a cool November day. Nice trail, little Rocky in places with a section of really big trees that must have blown down recently.

Great hike, nice views, pretty quiet on a bad weather day.

Dog friendly, moderate. Would do again!

Easily one of my favorite hikes in Maryland, Catoctin Mountain is home to several different short trails, with multiple crossover points between them. Wolf and Chimney Rock are highlights, featuring great views of the valley below and boulders that make for great picnics or pictures. Trails have a few moderate difficulty climbs, but for the most part the paths are fairly easy.

This route on the app says it's easy. The upper part of the loop ends up being the extended HARD hike. It was shocking to say the least but so much fricking fun!!! The upper loop was not for the faint at heart. :)

Easy trail, good for novice hikers and the falls are a great break before heading back.

Lots of sights. Too many people; but it’s great early. Long walk.

Good trail but short. Many people go to the falls and it can get crowded on nice days.

Harder with a 35 lb pack.

Too crowded today although it was great to see so many people out using the trails.
Also close to the road.
Trail would be better on a weekday withless people/ traffic.
Great views, beautiful woods not hard to hike.

Not sure why this is rated as Moderate as it is a very easy trail. My 8, 6, & 4 yr old had no issues at all. It is almost completely flat the entire trail with very few inclines/declines of any significance. Great for young kids and a great overlook view along the way.

It's a long, but easy hike. Chimney Rock is the only thing worth seeing, so I would actually recommend doing the trail in reverse, checking out Chimney Rock and Wolf Rock, then calling it a day.
