Easy trail. The falls are crowded in the summer. When you loop back, you see some nice boulders.

The trail is beautiful and hits two great points of interest on the way to Chimney Rock, but definitely falls on the easier side of moderate and is one of the shorter routes in Catocin park. Those looking for a challenge should check out other trail routes, but anyone looking to pack a lot of great trail features into a shorter distance will love it.

A pretty casual hike. A bit busy sometimes. Kids loved it.

We walked counter-clockwise from the visitors center and saw the falls first, then hog rock, and then we turned south on the yellow trail before reaching thurmont. We had a 2 and 3 yr old with us and were taking our time. We recorded 5.7 mi on the yellow loop. It was a very nice hike with beautiful views and fall colors.

had a fun day with some brisk walking around 10+miles (we did a little extra walking here and there) in around five hours!

I enjoyed the beautiful boulders on this trail. The view was fine. I also love how open the forest is in this park. I need a knee replacement but walked this trail without a problem.

The hike in this trail was amazing. We started with a warm up through the Park Headquarter / Orange Trail, then climbed up to the Wolf Rock, Thurmont Vista and Chimney Rock, the view from Thurmont Vista and Chimney Rock is breathtaking.

Wonderful hike even on a foggy day, you miss some of the views but it’s an enchanting feel.

I'm docking a star only because one cannot truly summit this mountain since Camp David sits atop the peak. The trails for the most part are easy to follow. I tend to go counter-clockwise so I can save Cunningham Falls as a treat at the end. The large switchback on the White Trail is a bit tricky. Keep an eye out for the trail markers otherwise you will go a bit on a false trail that will disappear after about 1,000ft. Views from the overlooks are great. If you have the time, take the side trail, which is basically a pure scramble, to Wolf Rock for a proper view of it.

Nice loop with a great view. At the time I hiked it there was a fairly large tree at about the .5 mike mark that was blocking the trail. It was a little difficult to get over so just be aware.

This hike was a lot of fun and had its challenges! The Catoctin Mountain Extension trail is actually a combination of trails that loop around a majority of park. If you want more of a challenge, definitely go counterclockwise (starting with Chimney Rock). If you have any questions, the park employees are very friendly! Only gave it 4 stars because of the views aren’t to die for, but still very beautiful overall.

Nice short hike through the woods to the falls. Can get pretty crowded and you are close enough to the road to hear car traffic the whole way. A lot of people jump off the boardwalk to climb up the falls.

The loop provided a decent workout without wiping me out. The falls trail was a little misleading though. The falls are not actually on the trail. You have to deviate from the loop, cross a road with traffic going by, and then continue on the boardwalk. There is a sign saying you are no longer on the trail. You can get better views from the boardwalk that leads straight from the parking lot. There are signs stating that people should keep off the natural area of the falls yet there were dozens of people climbing the rocks and fallen trees beyond the boardwalk. To get back to the Hog trail, you have to turn around and cross the road again. There are two overlooks with ok views. Some of the downhill parts of the trail were gravel which actually seems more dangerous than plain dirt, especially if it's slippery.

Well marked and wide open trails with several nice inclines. Saw our first rattlesnake on the rocks at Wolf Rock. Great hike our gps logged this at 5.2 miles.

Nice, easy trail. Saw a whitetail and the falls were pretty!

Nice hike! First half mile uphill gets the heart pumping. Saw a rattlesnake on Wolf Rock, lots of up, but nice and flat along the ridge.

Not a big fan of this one. This felt like a long walk in the woods. The woods are beautiful, but there is no “real” overlook. I did not get the sense of a “summit”. Lastly, Cunningham Falls was a little disappointing. I expected more. Plus, the fact that the falls is not technically part of the hike(it has its own parking lot) took away some of the experience to me.

Great Trail! I did it counter-clockwise. Strongly recommend getting there early if you’re going on Sat or Sun as the lot can fill up quickly. The trails are well marked, so the risk of getting lost is low. Sections of the trail can be wet if there has been recent rain, but very little mud.

Nice scenic hike. Fairly easy even for someone like me with arthritis and bad knees. Beautiful view at Hog Rock vista.

Fantastic trail! Well marked and challenging but worth the views.

Good time to go in summer especially after the rains when the fall has good amount of running water. Had a great time climbing the rocks along the fall. I wouldn’t say it is an ‘easy’ hike but a moderate to hard one. You can also sit by the river which is near the parking lot and enjoy a picnic. Will definitely go again.

It was good not that great. but you will have couple of good views up there. for me its good experience because i climbed rock which is little bit challenging.

We really enjoyed this hike. With the easy rating, we expected it to be flat but were pleasantly surprised by the inclines.

Great hike! Cooler than staying in DC! Lots of boulders to climb!

Probably one of the best hikes for the area!! Crossing the road to get to the falls was a little precarious and some of the trail has stretches that run alongside the road unfortunately. It did have some fun challenges though and wolf rock was pretty cool to see! Definitely recommend doing it counterclockwise. I did also catch a woodpecker in action!!

Very nice people helping us get to know trials

I highly suggest to arrive early if you want to park where the AllTrails app takes you and park near the visitor's center. We got there around 9am on a Saturday and both lots were full. Fortunately, the park posted signs along the road that additional parking was available 1/2 mile up the road. The overflow parking brought us right to the trailhead. The trails are well marked and we took the trail to the vista counter clock wise. It was a bit more challenging going this route but definitely in the lower moderate scale for difficulty. The trail was heavily traffic today but well worth the trek.

Expected it to be more flat but had a good time.

I did this trail as a shakedown hike with my new backpacking gear. Made a reservation for 1 of the 2 shelters (equipped with outhouse and fire pit) that are located close to the halfway point. Perfect setup for this, or even just for a quick overnight trip. The trail has some moderate ups and downs, nothing to serious. Well marked trail. I loved the shelters. The surrounding trees are gorgeous and a little stream meanders behind the site. Leaves were not yet on the trees, so stargazing was possible and the sky was dark enough to see more than in town. I will definitely be back!
