Expected it to be more flat but had a good time.

I did this trail as a shakedown hike with my new backpacking gear. Made a reservation for 1 of the 2 shelters (equipped with outhouse and fire pit) that are located close to the halfway point. Perfect setup for this, or even just for a quick overnight trip. The trail has some moderate ups and downs, nothing to serious. Well marked trail. I loved the shelters. The surrounding trees are gorgeous and a little stream meanders behind the site. Leaves were not yet on the trees, so stargazing was possible and the sky was dark enough to see more than in town. I will definitely be back!

nice hike with the dogs

easy, well maintained trail that the whole family can do - there is even an option that is ADA accessible (parking along a road only w/ handicap passes & a flat boardwalk to a large observation area with benches) we went in early july and enjoyed the freshly ripened raspberries that surrounded the trail

I went last week. Nice hike. When I got to the vista though, a large group was already there so I didn’t have a place to sit to admire the view.

Nice scenery and a fun little extra trail to tack on to my trip to this park. A little bit of history was a bonus.

Great little hike around 1.1 miles. Great overlook. Gravel surface but groomed well. Little bit of Traffic as it is an easy one for the kiddos. 4 year old had a blast.

I definitely would not consider this a “moderate” hike. I extended it and went over to Wolf Rock and Chimney Rock and I still didn’t think this was moderate. The hike itself is easy. With the leaves covering the trail and some of the rocks, it could be considered lightly moderate in winter/fall. Otherwise, it was a lovely easy hike and I would definitely do it again! The views were nice and it was good to be in nature.

Great hike.

A steep hill from Charcoal parking lot and a rocky climb down to a joining trail. Beautiful view of Thurmont and a must hike. It is a fairly rocky trail so beware.

Had the trail to myself on a cool November day. Nice trail, little Rocky in places with a section of really big trees that must have blown down recently.

Dog friendly, moderate. Would do again!

This route on the app says it's easy. The upper part of the loop ends up being the extended HARD hike. It was shocking to say the least but so much fricking fun!!! The upper loop was not for the faint at heart. :)

Easy trail, good for novice hikers and the falls are a great break before heading back.

Really nice hike! I went in the fall and the trees covered some of the views. I can imagine the winter being a better time to go to see more from the view points.

Good trail but short. Many people go to the falls and it can get crowded on nice days.

Too crowded today although it was great to see so many people out using the trails.
Also close to the road.
Trail would be better on a weekday withless people/ traffic.
Great views, beautiful woods not hard to hike.

Not sure why this is rated as Moderate as it is a very easy trail. My 8, 6, & 4 yr old had no issues at all. It is almost completely flat the entire trail with very few inclines/declines of any significance. Great for young kids and a great overlook view along the way.

Take the high trail for a bit more of a challenge. This also connects to the Catoctin Trail and campground trail.

Parked at Thurmont parking lot and hiked with my teen daughter. Middle of the week. Had the trail to ourselves all the way up. Glorious silence. Holy cow do those gnats and skeetoes love me! I'm outta shape so It was challenging for rookie hiker like me. It got rocky and kinda steep on some parts but the feeling of accomplishment when I reached the top! The view made it so worth the climb. Even though it was a bit hazy. Will hike again.

It was a good trail, but very crowded. Nice loop options. Was a good walk. The waterfall was beautiful!

Easy but the fact it was pouring rain made it more interesting :)

was nice..and the reward the falls..

Lovely views and unique rock formations. See if you can find some metallic blue slate like I did.
