Hands down one of my favorite and memorable hikes! I went in late August in 2016 and we barely saw any bugs. There were blueberries EVERYWHERE along the trail! It was a tough hike - very steep at places with some loose rocks. But the view is well worth it. You break above the trees very early on in the hike, so the rest of the way you have grand sweeping views of the surrounding mountains! We saw three other people on the hike the whole time we were on it.

Amazing! I mean simply Amazing! The views are unbelievable, the lake is very pretty and a great place to swim after the hike, doesnt get nearly as busy as Katahdin does, only passed one other hiker myself hiking this trail, great camping area (need to register/pay to camp) make sure you check in with the ranger before hiking, this hike is extremely difficult, 90% of it is above the tree line so youre constantly in the sun, elevation gain is no joke and tons of rock scrambling, the weather can also be a little unpredictable on the ridges (got caught in a 10 min thunder storm myself) so bring a rain jacket and min of 2 liters of water per hiker!

Very difficult for an active hiker approaching sixty years of age and requires a good weather day, but has to be one of the most spectacular hikes you can do. The loop took over ten hours to complete, as there are very few stretches where one can just walk. Most every step (or scramble) must be planned. Still spectacular.

Hiked it in June of 1999. From South Gate 8 miles to Katahdin Stream Campground. Stayed in Walk-in Lean-to No. 2 one night and 3 another night. (Lean-to’s 1 – 3 or tent sites 24 & 25 are the best sites in the Campground. Lean-to’s best for 2 people or 3, maximum. If with a group, lean-to’s 4 – 8 are best.)

Great trail to do! My friends and I did it on our way up Katadin, and it was a great spot to stop. When we got there around 8am it was a great misty scene, by the time we returned from the summit the lake was beautiful! It truly opened up. Will have to come back to camp for sure!

I made it to the summit of Mt. Katahdin yesterday! This trail is absolutely challenging but manageable with wonderful hiking buddies who knew my abilities and let me take as many breaks as I need and helped carry water and food:-)! I would not recommend going down this trail if you are hike beginners. I went down by hunt trail, which is a very scenic doable trail, and I highly recommend.

Really fun, tough trail. Pretty steep in parts, great fun once you get near top with big boulders to scramble up!

Great trail from Roaring Brook up to Chimney Pond. Chimney Pond is breathtaking.

This trail was quite wet even though it was not raining and i was grateful for my rain pants and jacket. The loop was nice with views of the pond fairly often. We did this loop and the big and little Niagara falls in the same afternoon. There were lots of blueberries and partridge berries to nibble on the way.

Without a doubt the hardest hike I've ever done. I can hike and walk, even with loads. However, rock scrambling boulders that are taller than me was extremly difficult. The mt weather was expected and i was prepared for +20 Celsius @ the bottom and hail at the top... But bouldering was tough.

Great hike! But beware! The black flies are horrible in summer months. We hiked it yesterday and were constantly bombarded by those little blood suckers. The newer build ups in the switchback portion of the trail are great and made this trail super enjoyable and easier to descend.

We hiked down the Abol trail from the top of Katahdin (one the way up we took the Hunt trail). Abol was somewhat easier than Hunt coming down so I would recommend the loop (except the two trail heads are about 2.3 miles apart so you need to hike that distance to get to your car. Quite a bit of boouldering but it was a lot of fun. Took us about 3 hours to get down. Took my teenager boys 2 hours to get down first so they hiked the 2.3 miles to get the car for us, which was very nice. I would recommend this loop if you would like to experience two trails in one hike.

Great hike!

Great hike, most scenic hike in Baxter, rocky but fun. Day we went, person was re-doing the marking on the trail. It is well-marked trail now.

Great little trail for a short trip! A bit muddy from frequent rain but nothing you can't handle, just a forewarning for those wearing tennis shoes! Pass through a bunch of blueberry bushes so be on the lookout for ripe ones, this the season! Big and little Niagra are also both great viewpoints

Awesome hike

zipped up and down in 5 hours but it is very challenging lots of rocks and boulders towards the top. Use your hands to get up the rocks towards the summit faster. eventhough i did it fast this was the most diffucult and taxing hike I've ever done. But the views are amazing and it's so peaceful!

Super rewarding. Be prepared for precipitation and wind at the summit. Take David Torrey's advice and pack gloves. I appreciated having gloves during the bouldering. Views are spectacular when not socked in!!

Hiked 9/3/16. Difficult but rewarding hike! Nice combination of steady incline, switchbacks, and rock scrambling on the Abol trail! Breathtaking views at Baxter Peak.

We did this trail in July of 2016! Gorgeous day. Nice new trail; but I can't wait until it's broken in a little. The loose gravel was kind of scary coming down.

We drove into Millinockett, Maine from Brunswick. Early in the morning you have the road all to yourself and the highway is wide and straight. We were pretty much focused on Mt. Katahdin, as we were doing an up and over the next day. But Millinockett is a nice town, very welcoming. Didn't take many pictures until we got to the mountain, stopped by the ranger cabin and walked down to the lake to view what was ahead of us. Ate a good home-cooked meal at one of the local restaurants. Hardly slept that night knowing we had a great day ahead. Recommend a one night stay just to take in the area in Baxter State Park and do as much hiking as you want.

Tough when there's 6" of snow above the tree line. Gotta have the right gear to stay warm and not slip.
