This was my first experience with a vertical hike using iron rung bars for cliff ascension and I was not disappointed! A truly stunning climb with gorgeous views and adventure the whole way up. Not for those who have a severe fear of heights or vertigo. I would highly recommend this to anyone who truly enjoys hiking/climbing (not just trail walking). Definitely go up beehive for the climb and down bowl for the lake visit during descent.

The climb up the steep, south facing section is exhilarating and the views are amazing all the way up. I would not recommend that section for beginners or those with a strong fear of heights. It's not anything crazy but there are a few tricky spots requiring the use of iron grab bars, including one that you use to swing around a convex rock face. If you have decent balance and good footing you should be OK. If not, you can go up and down the back side and still get the view at the top. This is a beautiful, iconic hike.

We hiked up Dorr ladder south trail first and then came down Dorr south ridge and canon brook. My husband struggles with heights and was able to do this hike easily. They weren’t lying when they said 2,000 stone steps in beginning. I have asthma and the beginning was pretty steep, so I did have to stop frequently on that first part but once we got to the ladders it wasn’t bad. Loved the trail coming down. Beautiful hike well worth the effort because the views are magnificent.

Hands down one of the best hikes I’ve ever done!! If you have a fear of heights, pass. Once in a lifetime type of hike

Acadia never disappoints. For this hike you’ll go up over 1,000 stairs almost straight up the side of the mountain. There are also 3 ladders (this ascent is in the Ladder Trail). The first ladder is the longest and a bit scary, but I just said some choice words and climbed fast. The other 2 ladders are much easier. Like many of the peaks in Acadia, the top goes on for a long time. Lots of great lookouts and places to hang. On the way down you’ll take the Cannon Brook Trail. That part was a little boring until the pond. (You take a left onto this trail to complete the loop. I’ve read you can also go right, go up, see waterfalls, and check out Cadillac. I plan to return later in the week to check it out. ). The first half of this trail is strenuous but a LOT of fun... even that first ladder!!

Beautiful hike!

Make sure you go at high tide if you want to actually experience the thunder hole. Still a beautiful view, but we missed that.

This is an amazing trail if you're willing to take things slowly. The views are amazing. The trail is an uphill climb involving metal ladders driven into the rock, and narrow cliff edges. This is definitely a trail where a good sense of balance is required. I did this with a group of 4 others, all varied skill levels, and we made it to the top in one piece.

This trail is short but one of my favorites- good steep workout and the views are beautiful

Hard but great views! One of my favorite trails I have ever done! Go in late August! There are many metal rungs and ladders used to climb the mountain. Do not attempt if you’re afraid of heights!

Neat to hear the boom and waves crash but it’s more of an overlook on the side of the road.

did this trail but came in the long pond trail and up. not gonna lie, the first half of this climb from the lake up is exposed and not entirely safe or comfortable for those not cool with heights(which I seem to be becoming). that said, after the first half you can really enjoy the absolute marvel that is this perfect staircase up the side of a mountain. I would never decend these stairs! took the backside down to notch trail...as others have said the trail down from the backside is not well marked. the trail down to notch trail after it branches off, is LESS well marked and I wasted some time walking back and forth on the rock and the face of the ledge. a memorable hike from the fire road to the north. I would not take kids under 10 from the lake up the mountain.

Wow!!! A real challenge for me, but what an experience. View from top panoramic. Hiked 2015.

Super fun trail, with a little climbing! Certainly not a trail for younger kids and dogs.

Really nice hike with good views of Long Pond and Bernard Mountain. Not terribly difficult but be prepared for some stairs! This trail also has some great links to other trails!

I am a little nervous of heights but the views are beautiful. Would do this again!

It’s more of an attraction along a trail... not a trail itself. Very cool however.

March 22,2020 there was a lot of ice coming off the rock face which made it very pretty. I wouldn’t rate this trail hard, just stairs going up made difficult this time of year only by the ice. I wouldn’t bring a small child here, but that is only because it would require my attention and my feet needs me to pay attention to where I was walking. Went up and down this trail, next time I will add Mt Bernard to the hike.

Beautiful !!! But very hard and scary! Not for people with the fear of altitude.
