Description

When the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers were impounded to create Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, an inland peninsula was formed. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy designated the peninsula Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area in an effort to demonstrate how an area with limited timber, agricultural, and industrial resources could be converted into a recreation asset that would stimulate economic growth in the region. Today, LBL remains the country's only such demonstration site and is the centerpiece of the region's tourism industry. Land Between The Lakes offers all the outdoor recreation "basics," with some unique opportunities for environmental education and historic interpretation. Nestled in western Kentucky and Tennessee, LBL hosts visitors from all over the nation and from more than 30 foreign countries. With more than 170,000 acres and 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline, you'll discover a wide range of opportunities in LBL to create memories that will last a lifetime. LBL is maintained by the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, in partnership with "Friends of LBL" for the public's enjoyment and safety.

This is a an excellent extended hike. Some terrain is very difficult but some is very easy. The south portion is mostly in the woods and the north section takes you along the banks of Kentucky Lake. Not much to see for the most part but it's a great time in the woods. Show more

This is a nice route that combines several trails to make the loop. You can find parking at the trail head just northwest of the start showing on this map, the hike to the trail intersection is approximately 1 mile and will require to cross over the road, as there is no available parking on the road side. If you are looking for solitude this could be the place for you. Early in the year there were several small stream crossing and one bride crossing about 2/3 of the way in, the second third of the loop does not have water sources available after the bridge, so check your water and fill up if needed.Show more

When the campground is closed, you can park in the small lot by the gatehouse. You may want to have the app or downloaded map on hand as there are several branches off the main trail that can be hard to follow. This is a good family hike. You have to park at the day parking area about 100 yards from the campground entrance, walk to the entrance and check in but there is no fee. The trailhead is just past the campground entrance. There are a few long hills but nothing steep. There are markers along the way that tell about the history of the area.Show more
