Experience the fun of outdoor adventure at Starved Rock State Park. Whether you enjoy hiking along the nature trails or viewing the many spectacular overlooks along the Illinois River, recreational opportunities abound. From picnicking to fishing to boating, from horseback riding to camping to enjoying winter sports, theres so much to do that youll come back again and again. The backdrop for your activities are 18 canyons formed by glacial meltwater and stream erosion. They slice dramatically through tree-covered, sandstone bluffs for four miles at Starved Rock State Park, which is located along the south side of the Illinois River, one mile south of Utica and midway between the cities of LaSalle-Peru and Ottawa. The park is best known for its fascinating rock formations, primarily St. Peter sandstone, laid down in a huge shallow inland sea more than 425 million years ago and later brought to the surface.

Awesome trail! A bit icy in more heavily trafficked areas, a good bit of stairs and the waterfalls still had a bit of running water. Overall a great moderate level trail!

Trail was easy. When you get to the end it was amazing who knew it was an hour away from Chicago.

Just an ok trail compared to other trails in the area. Limited canyon trails and main trail was very muddy. Great bluff views of the river though.

Paired up a hike that includes this canyon and Illinois Canyon. Great hike and a bunch of rock hiking in a nice winter day!

Great trail in winter. Needed to cross several sections of water that were not yet frozen. Great waterfalls and not crowded.

Easy to moderate hike, with a great box canyon with some falls to see. Trail was a bit muddy but not bad.

Perfect hike for a perfect 56 degree day!!

Trail is in really good condition. A little muddy down by the river, but everything else is pristine.

Short walk to the back of the canyon from the trail head. Trail is a bit washed out but just stay on the high ground and you’ll be fine. Bring an extra pair of shoes. You will get muddy

when we were here a couple years ago there was a huge tree down back in the canyon, after crossing the water and getting on the rocks to pur surprise we seen a HUGE waterfall! disappointed this trip cause the water had washed the tree away and there is no way to see the waterfall except the small one at the end of the canyon.

This was an amazing hike and not too difficult. There are some stairs but they weren't too steep. Great look out spots of the Illinois river. You are mainly up on a bluff most of the time. Our dog enjoyed this hike as well and it was lightly trafficked in some areas. Will be revisiting!

very easy. some stairs but the boardwalks have good handrails. the overlook is pretty fantastic.

canyon is close indefinitely due to hazardous conditions

Extremely crowded trail and somewhat unkept in parts. The human erosion is an issue here.
