Hiking

Done this trail many times. It has gotten busier over the years, but I still think its worth a visit if you are an Illinois local.

Starved Rock is quite popular due to the number of different activities it provides. Hiking through the forest is very pleasant though it could be a bit tricky after a rainstorm. The stairs definitely get your heart beating and the canyons/falls are definitely worth the hike. There is ample shade throughout so sunscreen isn't mandated (but recommended!!). There are parts of the trail that has a fair amount of mosquitos so DEET would be useful.

really beautiful scenery with rivers and a tiny waterfall, but a bit muddy + surprisingly busy right now. camped for a night over at their campgrounds too and it was great! muddy due to rain and a lot of littering on the trails. shaded for the most part and lots of uphill climbs, but it’s not too strenuous!!

There is WAY to many people here. Also stop littering and smoking weed on the trails. Go be a degenerate at your own home. Went to Wildcat canyon and there was easily 60-70 people inside that canyon alone standing almost shoulder to shoulder. Constantly walking close to multiple people going up and down the stairs. I’ve never seen that many people at this location ever and considering the time we are in with COVID I think this Park should do something about it.

Great trail. Dog friendly. Lots of stairs at the beginning and end. Took about 2 hours. Worth getting there early (before 9am) to beat the crowds. Reminder to all - don’t litter!

I had a great hike. The hike w as s more work than the easy rated hikes but was still very good for someone just beginning.

A little crowded, and some bugs at the start. but, other than that a good family hike.

A great place for hiking regardless of your hiking experience and physical capabilities. This park is a family friendly place with very paved paths. There are different trails and sites to see. You can either spend a few hours or a whole day here. The only drawback is: it’s a big tourist spot. Go early or on a weekday.

Easy multi-surface loop from the Starved Rock SP Visitors Center to Starved Rock Lodge. Trails include heavily trafficked single-track, boardwalk, and concrete. Great view of the river and waterfalls along the way.

Visually beautiful place but very crowded trails. There was literally a Zumba class going on at the main waterfall. Not very peaceful. Not to mention, so much trash and liter!

Great trail! Beautiful views but very busy even for a Wednesday. I also found the paths confusing. 1.5 hours of walking and a ton of stairs and we never did find the waterfall lol

Beautiful area and one of the best hikes in illinois. AllTrails logged over 7 miles. Very crowed and lots of radios playing on trail.

So much fun! The waterfall is all the way down at (something) Point. I forgot the name! Sorry! But there weren’t many people while we were there. Later in the day, there’s less people. Have fun and stay safe!

It’s a beautiful trail, but there were hoards of people here. Went on a Wednesday mid-day. Felt like an amusement park.

Great hike! It’s very rewarding at the end. The only one con is that there is a lot of people there even on weekdays. But on the other hand, I think this trail is less popular than others, so it is less crowded comparing to other trails in this park.

The trails have always been beautiful with a touching dash of graffiti and vandalism on the wooden rails. Personally I don’t mind and I find it humorous. What I truly love is the camping. A different range of sites with accommodations offers great choices to meet all needs. Lots of greenery and trees allows privacy and the peacefulness of nature. The drive from the camp site to the visitor center/trails isn’t too long and the drive is nice since it offers a glimpse of the town.
