We went about 2.5 miles in before we had to turn back due to our own time constraints. The trail was very well maintained and clearly marked throughout. A bit muddy in spots and would have been really skuck if we'd had any real rain recently. I'd recommend good hiking shoes with ankle support and traction. We are in decent shape and there were spots on the trail that still left us winded after some pretty steep climbs. Overall though, it was a gorgeous hike with lots to see and lots of different types of trees, plants, and terrain.

My first hike and couldn’t have picked a better place to start off my new obsession. Well worth the 4 hour drive. I definitely will be back. I had to cut my time out short do to running out of water. I also went during a drought. I’m a big guy and definitely packed to much for my trip and the trail was fairly easy for me to complete.

great trail! conditions were perfect, a recent rain has settled the dust and hikers and horses have packed the dirt in tight so its pretty smooth. the difficulty level seems a bit high...I would consider this as a moderate difficulty with some scrambling. Lots of rock formations and bluffs to explore so this will be an excellent trail to hike in the winter when the leaves aren't blocking the views

Easy trail. Half way thru many stairs down to the Rim Rock which is somewhat narrow but not too much. Could be very slick if wet. Coming back takes some effort if you opt not to take the loo around. You can also take this to Pound Hollow.

Stayed here for a night. Nice primitive camping and dog friendly. Close to several trails. Will camp here again. Fire pits at each camping area along with grill and picnic table.

Lovely and easy enough for this 70 year old nana.

awesome hike

One of our favorites in southern Illinois. Well maintained.

Sooo many horse flies! They follow you no matter how much bug spray you put on. Other than that I loved it. It’s hard to complain about bugs when you are outside but it was really A LOT of them. They are knocking on your car windows as soon as you pull in haha. (Not exaggerating). We took a wrong turn and ended up at pounds hollow...i did not see any signs to let me know we were leaving rim rock trail so that upset me. That connecting trail was super overgrown as well (should have been a clue we weren’t on rim rock trail anymore but we have never been here so didn’t know). That lake was full of more flies but also lots of cute butterflies! Other than those annoying huge flies..it’s a pretty trail.

Nice trail through a peaceful forest, with the creek and slot canyon as a great bonus!

I went for the first time last week and loved it! Lots of steps/stairs but definitely worth it.

We missed a few blazes and had to back track a bit, but all-in-all It was a really great hike,.. up until about the 11mi mark anyway. After that it was pretty tortuous. There were so many pines across the trail that it was just easier to make a new trail around most of them. Can you say briar patch? In many places it was a whole grove of trees on the ground. The trail was also cover with a tall grass that made it impossible to see where we were putting our feet. Once we finally got out of that mess and reached Bassett Rd we were greeted with a very official looking notice informing us that the next section was closed for logging. Yippy. We ended up road hiking it the rest of the way back to our vehicle. All of that aside, we still had a good time and I'm hopeful that the next section is in a little better condition, when we come back in a couple of weeks...

Nice trail with great views and cool rock formations. There is also a nice connecting trail to the East that brings you to Pounds Hollow beach at a small lake. There are a few cross crossing trails which can be confusing at times.

Dog friendly hike through giant boulders and skinny walkways. Beautiful, my favorite on the area!

Great Trail! Here's an article about the hike from my Blog. https://chrisbunton.blogspot.com/2017/05/rim-rock-and-pounds-hollow.html

I ran a couple mile on this trail and had to stop. It seemed like no one had been on the trail for months. There were spider webs every two steps and parts of the trail looked overgrown. I didn’t have a problem finding the trailhead or staying on the trail. I took one wrong turn around the first creek but that was my own fault.

Not much in way of views but does have some things of interest; a cave, stone wall and other features. was nicely shaded.

Despite the trail conditions, I’m thankful it is so close to home and that it even exists.
