If youre looking for the ideal place to drop your line and catch a record fish, look no farther than Clinton Lake State Recreation Area. Recreational opportunities abound at this 9,300-acre facility, just 3 miles east of Clinton in central Illinois. From picnicking, hiking and camping to swimming, water skiing and boating to hunting for upland game, people from all over the midwest flock to Clinton Lake to enjoy the great outdoors. If just relaxing and watching the animal life is your interest, Clinton Lake has various small mammals and nearly 40 species of birds, including osprey, which dive into the lake for fish. In the spring, it is the place to search for morels. In the fall, it is ablaze with a rainbow of color. The park land actually belongs to AmerGen which operates a nuclear power plant in the area. The State of Illinois has operated the park since 1978 through a long-term lease with the utility company. The partnership demonstrates that the state government and private businesses can work together to provide outstanding recreation.

Enjoyed the hell out this trail! 90 degrees and sunny. Easy to follow, not much for sights and views, an ok challenge for a 55 year old.

Great views of the lake, saw some deer too!

Make sure you read the posted signs about when the trail is open. It is closed certain times of the year for hunting. It's a nice trail but can be primitive at times. Ticks can be very bad in this area.

Most parts of this trails are through the woods so not very amazing visibility. However occasionally you can get off the trail and have an overview of the lake. At one point the trail changed into a prairie which is pretty cool.

Warning: When you were hiking south again, pay attention to the side of the trail. Someone put something interesting there, but I won't spoil it.

This trail is very slick after a thaw and has quite a bit of elevation change for the middle of Illinois.

Gem of a trail. Primarily ridge and ravine hiking. Cool abandoned cars and structures. Great views of the lake. 1/11/15 27F overcast with some sleet. Frozen mostly snow covered trail. Easy to find path.

Not terrible for the middle of Illinois. Mostly the same scenery through the woods the majority of the time. Can only see the lake for 1-2 miles. No real good viewpoints of the lake.

Really nice trail, and pretty challenging since there are bluffs to climb and mini-valleys to go down to. Can also get off the trail to see the lake if you want a break. There are also a couple of benches to stop at, but your best bet for rest is to sit down on one of the many small bridges.

This is a man made lake formed by a dam, some waterskiers were emjoying it. The nice wooded trails were mostly all to myself. Good, quite place to camp over nite if travelling through the area.
