Three distinct units can be found at this state park, three of which are located near Lucky Peak reservoir just 8 miles east of Boise. Discovery Park is a popular roadside park for picnics, walking your pet or fishing in the Boise River. Sandy Point, at the base of Lucky Peak Dam is most popular for its sandy beach and clear, cool water. Spring Shores offers lakeside access for water enthusiasts by providing two boat ramps, parking, a full-service marina, on-site watercraft rentals and convenience store.

Kids made it up an back, though we had to take a couple breaks. Mormon crickets everywhere. Saw a bull snake.

The Trailhead was a little difficult to locate. As you take a right onto East Spring Shores Rd. from HWY 21, keep your eyes open for the 2 mile marker. If you park at the Marina, you haven’t gone far enough. Continue just a little bit, you’ll see the 2 mike marker and then a dirt parking lot on the right (or north river bank). Today, the “gate” was closed so we assumed that wasn’t the proper Trailhead. It was! You’ll follow the dirt road until it dead ends; look to the left, there’s a VERY NARROW route through some brush. Once you pass that, it’s mostly a dirt route you follow. While the hike was challenging, it was doable. We (a group of 3 in our 30s) did not take poles because we’ve never really experienced a need for it in our hiking adventures. They REALLY would have come in handy on the way down those steep slopes of gravel and sand; it’s non-negotiable next time I go! The “mormon crickets” were out in full force and there aren’t many blooming wildflowers out at this time of year.

None the less, it was a great work out with very beautiful views. Make sure to leave a note in the little black tub at the peak for others to enjoy and get an early start. We began around 9:30 a.m. and the majority of hikers were finishing their trek. We only saw 1 more group attempting to summit on our descent.

Others have addressed it already but there is no shade so bring lots of water! Also, due to the slippery slopes, I don’t recommend bringing a dog who isn’t well trained on a leash (if on a leash) because they’re likely to pull you to your death (my pup would)!

Great view the whole way up. Be sure to pack a lot of water as you will need it due to the lack of the shade. Also, note that this trail isn't easy. It averages 824ft of elevation gain the first mile and 968ft the second mile. If going for sunset be sure to bring a headlamp for the trip back down.

Good trail to get some exercise! It’s only a little over 2 miles up, but it’s STRAIGHT uphill - so be prepared for a workout. If you are taking a dog, go early in the morning and bring plenty of water for him/her! It’s in the sun the whole way! Overall easy trail to follow and nice hike.

Good time, located between mile post 17 & 18 on hwy 21, and pass the 2 mile marker on spring shores. Hiked/ran, we summited in 42 minutes and down an 32. Direct uphill the whole way up

Great hike, challenging at parts and hot during the day. Bring plenty of water for your dog as there's no shade once you're on the trail. At the end of the hike, jump in the lake by following the trail near where you parked!

Make sure you go in the morning as there’s no shelter from the sun on this steep trail

A great short, steep hike (about 1+ hrs up and 1 hr down). Views are wonderful, trail is pretty good with a couple spots rutted out. Flower and foliage are coming in strong during the middle of May. Great time to be out and about!

Definitely a challenging but rewarding hike. Can’t wait to do it again!

Tough, but rewarding when summit.

The hardest hikes have the best views. Worth it.

Nice trail, fairly steep but not terrible, killer 360 degree views at the top and not a lot of traffic. All components to a great hike in my book. Really liked this hike!

Wonderful views, nice cool weather hike because you get HOT climbing this bad boy. Winds at the top will chill you down quickly, pack a lightweight wind jacket.
