Explore the most popular lake trails in Kaniksu National Forest with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

The trail was very popular, today. The parking lot was full between 1 and 3.

Conditions: the streams were rushing but only 3 to 5 feet across. The path was dry throughout. The snow at the top was slippery and prone to foot-cave ins. Other hikers remarked that the snow slowed them down. Poles were marginally helpful, but cleats were not.

There is no lake unless you count Lake Ponderay. This will test your knees on the way back down. The last mile or so still had snow and make things a little dicey. The mosquitos were relentless. Wear a bug net. There were some nice little water streams along the way. View was nice.

Great hike. Lots of snow still in April. Needed snow shoes at about 800 ft from the top. Great views.

Great hiking trail through the woods with streams and lots of snow at about a mile in right now. Didn't use microspikes or snowshoes as the snow was wet and packed down most of the way up. Last mile had us post-holing a bit up to our knees in areas. Great views.

Great trail! My second time here. Would’ve been nice to have a pair of yak tracks for the bottom half as it was slushy and pretty slippery, and a set of snowshoes for the top. Over a foot of snow once you hit the second mile! Great trail for dogs since they can be off leash once you hit public land. Lots of fresh deer tracks!

Love this area! Great place to camp and beautiful to hike around!

Hiked to the lake with the Boy Scout Troop for a quick 1 day/1 night trip. We had anticipated having some spotty snow on the ground at the lakes, and hoped to do some rock climbing practice in the area. However, we hit the snow line less than 1/2 mile into the hike and were looking at 8-10 inches by the time we reached the lakes. The biggest surprise was that the lake was quite solidly frozen over already.
We had to break trail through the snow on the way up, but we found it pretty easy to follow the route. Plenty of bridges over the marshy areas and orange ribbons showed the way. The temperature ranged from the upper 20s to the upper 50s while we were out, so the snow was soft and wet during the daylight hours, and frozen over during the night. Majestic views of the mountains and beautiful landscape made this a worthwhile outing.

Lots of snow, come prepared! Beautiful hike.

Loved this hike. Did it a year ago. would recommend not hiking in to stay the night after September. We had snow, rain, hail and sleet. Spent a freezing night and woke up to 2 inches of frost on everything. At one point we smelled a bear while hiking in and had a huge bull moose in camp. Cute little lake, be prepared for moose and bear.

Great trail, views and lakes that are seen vs the effort to get to them is unmatched in the area. Starting to have a little snow cover and we saw a bunch of small black bear tracks on the trail.

Scenic once you gain some elevation and break out of the forest. Not overgrown now. A couple nice camp sites and a Bear box.

We climbed to the saddle and around with the idea of heading to Hunt Peak. There's no trail, of course, and the terrain makes it slow going. Cat II & III on the back side of the left horn of the saddle. Fun but we had a late start from the TH so we turned back before the ridge. Maybe another time.

Creek was flowing.

Hiked on 10/7/17. Snow on all trails, but still easy to ID trails. Great views at both lower and upper lakes. Camped overnight at lower lake. Five established campsites, all with nice pads for tents. Four have only one pad -- one has three. This group site is located with lots of parking and vault toilet.
VERY well maintained trails -- obviously lots of work to prevent water erosion. Wood boardwalks at both upper and lower lakes -- nice touches.
Long drive -- figure at least an hour from Naples cutoff.

Great overnight backpacking trip! Took the wrong turn finding the trailhead but that was our falt. Awesome lakes surrounded by high granite peaks of the Selkirk Mountain Range.

If you're interested in this hike, I made a video of the trip and you can find it at: https://youtu.be/GjWZR1K1Fr4

Or just search for the lakes on YouTube and you should find it. Leave a thumbs up and subscribe if interested. Lots more to come!

Incredible colors, fantastic atmosphere, dog friendly, and fun for all levels! Can't wait to go back :)

By far my fav. The 6.3 mile hike in was difficult for me but so worth it to see the view. You can also take a day hike from fault to hunt lake. It was a little long but very pretty.

I gave this a 5 just because we took a off the beaten path up to the top of the ridge for some outstanding views. It wasn't easy (recording) and not recommend for the beginner hiker its steep and a bit hairy in a couple spots. The main trail is in great shape and is a nice little hike with good views and three lake all in a few miles.

wonderful hike. 3 lakes for the price of 1. Slightly advanced to the upper lakes but still family friendly

Went this morning, we hit snow about a mile from the trailhead. Absolutely gorgeous, just weren't prepared for the cold this early. The trail was still easy to find even with the snow

All of it was beautiful!

Very easy hike for the 1.5 miles to Pyramid Lake. We had to turn around near the top of the switchbacks before Ball as the days are getting shorter. Spectacular views from these switchbacks and here the grade is moderate. Last mile to TH is rough. Don't need 4WD but low slung cars may lose an oil pan. Still had plump huckleberries despite bushes turning red for fall.

Great hike with a little side hike up to the peak above Hunt Lake for some awesome views. First four miles is a bit blah but after that things get pretty nice. Great trail pretty easy.

I hiked this last January. I used snowshoes where the trail had deep drifts, but a lot of it was packed down and extremely icy. I think I slipped twice. There were lots of mule deer and plenty of birds to look for. The view at the top is great!

This time of year, very dry and plenty of smoke in the air. Made for a very different setting. The trail to Bottleneck lake is well marked and in very good shape. Some horse riding activity up to Snow lake, however we had the Bottlneck trail to our selves. Beautiful lake, brought home a half dozen pan size brook trout. And had a great day! Certainly will be more enjoyable once the smoke clears out.

If you're looking for a decent hike and a good workout, this is it. 3.5 up and down! 7 miles total. There are a couple great viewing spots of the lake! It was a very smokey day, so the views were hindered. Still beautiful!
Wish there were better markers for when the trail ends. At the top there are two more benches, but nothing about how far you've gone or where it ends.
Few people out today, but I enjoyed that because I went solo. Yes there are better trails out there, but this is a good one and I will do it again (it's basically in my backyard!).

there is NOT a mountain lake at the top. The trail has a couple of decent view points but one would be better off driving to Schweitzer mountain for the same views only unobstructed. Find something to hike on the south or East end of the lake
