This is my favorite quick getaway! We snowshoed in on New Years Day 2019. Had to park just south of the freeway bridge due to snow. Broke trail around 10:30. Both switch backs where lost in the snow so we we straight up. It was a good workout, but do-able. There was over 5.5 feet of snow at the lower lake and °14. Got back to the truck at 3:00. Awesome hike ♡

Did this trail at the end of December. There was a lot of snow and with about .3 miles left on the trail there was a steep narrow incline with a lot of snow that I just couldnt climb up so I called it for another time. That being said, the people who were snowshoeing were able to get across, with a little difficultly in that one spot but still made it farther than I did with snowboots and crampons (not really necessary). The trail is gorgeous. There were a few other people out on snowmobiles in other areas that you can hear nearby and I saw a few back country ski and snowboarders. It is a beautiful trail, just dress in warm, waterproof clothes. I will definitely go back to this trail again soon.

One of favorite alpine lakes. It made for one epic snowshoe. Be prepared for technical shoeing, cold conditions and predators.

Great hike. moderate is a fair rating based on a regular hiker. Good elevation gain but short distance. Good payoff for moderate effort. Both lower and and upper seemed to have nice campsites. No snow as of 10/24. Noticed the time changed to Mountain on our phones between lower and upper. Bringing the fishing pole next year.

Moderate wouldn't be the best way to describe this hike. There is a lot of different terrain which keeps it fun but theres a large area of rocky terrain that can be challenging to walk up (even though there is a slight path created) especially after fast incline with shakey legs! it is beautiful but bring spikes just in case anytime after October as it can get icy on a very narrow trail just at the top. One of the most beautiful and serene hikes I've done. Dogs should be leashed ALWAYS but on this trail we saw some un leashed dogs and it could be very dangerous for even well behaved pups.

10/27 - no snow on the trail or surrounding peaks. Well maintained and no obstructions on main route. Circumnavigation of the lake is possible but not well marked; steep, muddy and poor footing in places. The drive out through Murray and along the river was beautiful. Plan enough time for breakfast at Snake Pit or lunch and beers in Wallace.

We backpacked in and camped at Upper Stevens Lake. Their were a couple very nice camping sites at both lakes. I would not consider myself an avid hiker and it was challenging but the moderate was accurate due to the short distance. I would highly recommend and on my top five places I've hiked.

This is a great trail. Easy directions to drive to the trailhead. Bathroom there. Plenty of parking. However...I would not consider it MODERATE. Any trail that you traverse a large rock shale slide should be hard. And should be mentioned. People hiking with dogs need to know this as well. There are also a lot of large root steps. I found this hike challenging and would definitely do it again but for my companion who does not hike a lot, it was not enjoyable. Beautiful lake at the top and gorgeous tamaracks in yellow right now.

Gorgeous views but you have to work for it! The fall colors are in full effect & we were surprised to be greeted by snow along certain sections of the trail.

The start of the trail is quite steep & definitely gets your heart pumping & calves burning. The scenery is beautiful & the lake at the end is worth the work. Certain parts of the trail weren't marked as well as others but there were several groups of hikers so we followed the footprints in the snow higher up.

Wonderful day hike!

Hiked to upper Stevens and stayed the night. The trail to the lake was well traveled and was a lot of fun to hike. The autumn colors were amazing, the mountains were red at the top and yellow and orange plants near the trail. The waterfall this time of year was barely a trickle, but it was still neat to see the large granite formations and crevasses where the waterfall was.

Camping at the lake was fun, but got below freezing and was very windy all night. We even had snow falling in the morning which was actually a treat. There are about four good camping spots at lower Stevens and a couple at upper.

I would recommend the hike for anyone who likes short hikes up hill and great mountain views.

Turnoff is a little hard to find. We had to go past where maps told us to go. Very easy hike! We took a group of 5 kids. The hike is roughly 3 miles round trip unless you go around the lake which is very steep and tough. The view is incredible.

My boyfriend and I are just starting to get into backpacking and this was our first real backpacking trip! We had a blast however there were a few problems along the trail. The trail was pretty easy to follow until trail 108. In the beginning It was an easy trail for the most part however once we got to the fork of trail 12 and 108, the trail disappeared. They were both clearly labeled and trail 12 looked decently maintained but about 100ft from the fork trail 108 was practically nonexistent.

We decided to keep going however thinking the trail would start to come back or we would be able to find It... we ended up doing this for so long there was a slim chance we could make our way back to the trail. Not the smartest idea, we admit, but It was too late. So we kept going northwest, luckily we had brought a compass and some printed out maps. We kept going northwest knowing we would hit the sawtooth creek or the river.

Finally after about 9 hours of going up and down steep mountains and over/under tons of blown down trees and through shrubs that were taller than our heads, we finally hit the sawtooth creek. We ended up hiking about a mile down and hit the river and knew about a quarter of a mile back was trail 50. So we turned around went back up the creek and got back on trail at that point and completed the loop. It was extremely challenging when we lost the trail and we contacted the forest services afterwords and they said multiple people have complained about the lack of maintenance of that trail. I would advise bringing a compass, a good map, an excellent gps, and a lot of determination. It was a great challenge and I feel a lot more confident surviving in the woods now, but It was not the safest route by far. Good luck!

Slightly aggressive if you go off the main to save some time. Lower lake is clear and cold with nice views.

Good hike. Great views. I agree with the previous reviews - it is not worth it to hike around the lake. I reached the lake quicker than I anticipated... It’s a little less than 2 miles to get up to the lake.

Beautiful hike. Very well maintained trail. Had a little FuzzNgrub at the lakeshore. Definitely going back!

Hiked this trail with a friend on August 29th. The main trail to the lake was fantastic; beautiful and green. There was a little bit of water flow on the waterfall. We attempted to hike around the lake (starting out on the left hand side, couldn't find the path on the right side), but there is not much of a trail. We were climbing over trees and trying to stay away from the steep hillside. When we got halfway around the lake we asked a couple fishing if there was a better trail and they said that it would be best to turn around and go back the way we came. Pretty sure there was a cougar in one of the bushes on our way back, didn't see one but heard a low guttural growling. Not sure how long it had been tracking us, but sounded an air horn and it must of scared it off. Didn't have any problems. Aside from the trail not being great around the lake, the experience was great and the lake was very beautiful. Would go again.
