The views are absolutely stunning! You could cut the hike short after either the first or second peaks, the views would make your trip well worth it if you got tired or weren't up to quite the full 9.5 miles. BUT the final peak is glorious and has some places to sit and eat lunch/ snacks. Only negative is that the trail is open to dirtbikes and sections of the trail have been torn up by motor use. The second incline is very rutted which makes it more technical to hike or bike than initially intended. We ran into 4 dirt bikers on the trail and they were even struggling to go up sections due to the severe rutting. I was hoping for more wildlife but I think the dirt bikes scared everything off- saw bobcat and (TONS of) elk tracks, but sadly no animals beyond squirrels

We missed the lake!!! Took trail 138 as all the online and hiking books suggested. We ended up climbing almost up to the trailhead 4.6miles then came back. We were able to look over the lone lake but there were no waterfalls as we expected. We will try again!! We talked to a couple and a group of three people. They were also thinking to get to the lake on the same trail. There were NO signs so, please don't make the same mistake as we did.... The hike itself was a very good workout! Steep steep hill and rocky parts. There was some snow close to the top and muddy. It will be challenging for a small dog and children. **There was a bathroom at the parking spot with toilet papers but No access to the water.

Pretty steep climb. Super pretty. Took a while to get there and was worried we were driving to no where. Didn’t make it up but made it a good ways in. Lots of fun and super pretty day trip.

Great Trail for a warm summer day. Plenty of shade on this heavily trafficked and well-maintained Trail. Lots of interpretive signs about Pulaski and the 1910 fire. Some insects but no mosquitoes.

Very well maintained trail until you try to reach the upper lake/pond—it is worth it though but be prepared to bushwack. Our 6 and 7 year old boys made it with very few issues. You are exposed to the sun a lot but there are opportunities for shade. The views are amazing throughout. I would recommend hiking poles as this trail is uphill with few switchbacks.

Wow! This trail is beyond beautiful. Our recorder said the trail was almost 6.0 miles, not the listed amount. It was hard and steep, but the chews were worth it. Saw a few families and dogs on the trail, though with the steep hillsides and difficult terrain I wouldn’t classify it as the best child/dog trail. The start of the trail, until about halfway up, was ALL SUN. We were bummed were weren’t hiking in the shade because it was so hot and sunny. But the shade came in eventually and gave great relief. Incredible views all the way, I mean truly. And the lake at the end was unbelievable. Not a ton of places to picnic as there isn’t much shoreline or flat services. But great regardless!

Another fantastic ride, down and back. Busy but still super enjoyable.

This bike ride was better than I imagined! I went early and had the trail mostly by myself. The tunnels and views are breathtaking. There are plenty of places to stop and take pictures or hang out and have lunch. It’s totally self-paced. This trail is dirt and rocky..well maintained and for all ages. Bring a light jacket for the tunnels, a good BRIGHT headlamp or flashlight small enough to hold and ride.

Super trail. Beautiful old cedars, gorgeous creek along the trail. Flat, very easy. Nice wildflowers too.

Beautiful hike at the end of June. Started at the new south trailhead and hiked in just past Alden Creek in search for a camp site but ended up settling for the meadow. Bring waterproof shoes or sandals because we had to cross streams several times.

It’s just steep. Like all of the way up. But very doable with breaks. The views and trails are gorgeous !!!!!! The streams are easy to pass. The snow was very minimal at the top and very easy to walk around. This is a serene place, average amount of hikers, certainly not a secret.

Steady incline most of the way up.. stunning views at the top and a great picnic are right before the top, loved seeing the horses on the trail even goats

Great trail! The first 1.6 miles are tough but it smooths out afterwards. Go straight at the intersection with Chilco Mountain trail (which is left). No sign at the intersection! Very few people on the trail. We followed a group of six people on horses who were doing trailwork. Last seven miles of road to the trailhead is gravel and filled with potholes. You are also sharing this road with a LOT of side-by-sides and dirt bikes. Suggest a vehicle with high clearance.

My 7 month old puppy and I did this hike. Dogs are allowed on a leash. I would recommend keeping your dog on a leash as the trail follows the creek and there are also some pretty steep embankments if your dog were to slip. Pros: No fee for parking. Paved lot and gravel across the street. Trailhead was very easy to find and paved all the way. Bathrooms at trailhead. Kid friendly. The trail was very well maintained and provides lots of shade. It was a great hike for a very hot day! It is 4 miles round trip (My Strava app actually calculated 4.5), but there are mile markers every 1/4 mile. I would say the trail is accurately marked as “moderate.” I thought it would actually be easier when I saw it would follow the creek all the way, but there are definitely some ups and downs. There are lots of benches to take a break along the way if needed. This is a hike with historical significance and there are many signs displaying information. Very interesting! Cons: I was hoping to get closer to the tunnel when I reached the end of the trail, but you look down on the tunnel across the creek from a viewpoint. It was clear that people have walked down the embankment to get closer, but it is steep and off trail. There was also a downed tree that ripped up part of the trail, but judging by the rest of the trail, I’m sure it is something that will be fixed soon. Overall, really enjoyed this hike today! Would recommend! 6/26/2020

Amazing hike! Imagine living in North Idaho and rating a hike bad cause a bear prevented you from hiking, where do these people think they are! Either way, hike was stunning, started late at 3 and got back at 10 in the pitch of night (and saw no bears!!). Trail is obviously rutted from dirt bikes and very rocky at the payoff but if you got decent boots you’ll be just fine, and only one very easy blowdown. AllTrails says it’s 8.8 miles but plan for at least 10, and enjoy the stunning views and wildflowers!

This was a beautiful trail! The waterfalls were incredible. The hike is steep in places...not a lot of switchbacks. Tricky in certain places. A lot of rocks, muddy areas which were not bad and about 5 or 6 creek crossings. Little snow near the lake. As of today, a few patches that are totally doable but take careful steps. Skeeters are out in force. The parking lot at the TH has a toilet. You can drive from there a half mile and park at another lot cutting off 1/2 mile each way if you choose. The waterfalls and lake are so worth the effort. You won’t be disappointed.

This is such a fun trail for families. It’s easy, well groomed and well marked with no challenging terrain. The ancient trees are breathtaking, and wildflowers abound.

It was hard to navigate the poorly marked trails. There are a TON of muddy puddles blocking almost the whole trail and honestly this is a major dirt bike enthusiast area. The views were amazing and the hike kicked our butts, but I probably won’t do it again. There were places that had no where to go if someone on a dirt bike was hauling ass and didn’t see you. But it was an experience for sure! NOT DOG Friendly!!!!
