Our yearly trek! Waterfall canyon is also definitely worth the extra push. If you're planning to make it an overnighter the far side of the upper lake is the prime territory. Been up here 4 years running and have always seen wildlife. Last time a moose stumbled upon us and gave us all a good jump. I don't know who was more surprised us or her.

this is definitely a hike that is accessible in the winter as long as it's not crazy snowy. The trail was easy to follow and trafficked.

Great hike, say a lot of wildlife, moose, deer, elk. Fishing wasn't to great, but what can you expect since it's almost November.

Mid October hike. Only saw one other person in the trail and he was headed back from fishing. A bit of snow melting off the trees from a recent light snow fall. The fish ladder is interesting to see at the trail head and the trail just follows the river below. Took our dogs. Lots of ducks, geese and great blue heron in the river.

The road to the parking lot at the top is very rough. Four-wheel drive is highly recommended. There is snow now, so i would suggest parking at the bottom and hiking the rest. Its challenging but its worth it!

Great hike! Plenty of good views and not too difficult. We didn’t see any, but watch for bears and moose as they are active in the area!

A great backpacking trail with nice lake views at the top. Be sure to take a water filter if you are planning to camp at the top.

One of our absolute favorite hikes!! It’s long, but not a hard hike with lots of beautiful views!

beautiful but hard to access

Upper Lake was great.Leg burner for the last quarter mile. Don't look for campsites by the lake but pick your birds nest north of the lake by abandoned outhouse. Plenty of knobs to choose from.

Amazing place for a horse ride. Absolutely beautiful!!!!! Not for novice horses or riders.

pretty walk and well maintained trail. not alot of people. I recommend it!

A fun trip to do with friends! We hiked up to the upper lake 2 weeks ago and loved the scenery along the trail. I suggest leaving early in the morning to start the day off cool and to have plenty of time to hike. Also take plenty of water. We ran out of water on the way back and ended up filling our bottles with running river water. The river water tasted great, but I don’t recommend drinking it without a filter.

I LOVE this hike. It’s a hike that makes you feel so satisfied when you get to the upper lake. Not very many steep parts, beautiful views of meadows, mountains, water and wildlife. I try to do this hike at least once every year. This is by far my favorite hike ever.

Easy hike, lots of thimble berries and frogs.

Love this hike! It's one of my favorites. My kids love to catch frogs at the lake.

This is not the trail you want to go to. Luckily we were in a truck otherwise we wouldn't have made it to the trail head. Even still this trail was not for anything other that an ATV! Do yourself a favor and search for Packsaddle Lake Trail. You access from the North and both the road and trail into the lake are much better! This one should have some description to note that access is very difficult. Once we made it to the trail head we found out we could at least drive out another way heading west so that we didn't have to travel out on the same road (still rough but 10X better). The forest service has pushed up berms along the Eastern access road to help with water run off, but you will high center your vehicle of you don't have a good bit of clearance! Please be careful if using this trail and again search for the Packsaddle Lake trailhead that accesses from the North. It will make your trip much less stressful!

Scenic hike along the river with good opportunities to see wildlife.

I'm not really sure how the original Trail got recorded on to All Trails but I logged 15.25 miles on that same route to go up to the upper Palisades lake so I think the trail details need to be updated. Aside from that it was a great Trail beautiful views little bit longer than I had hoped but I would do it again.

Beautiful hike and views. The wildflowers were amazing. Saw a bull moose in the water when we got to Alduous Lake.

This was a beautiful hike. We came from 8000 feet in CO, so the lower altitude made it even easier. We hiked to the lake where my husband caught (and released) 30+ fish in an hour, then we hiked back. It started to rain and lightening mid afternoon, so keep an eye on the weather as there are some very exposed sections of the trail. This would also be a great trail running trail.

Nice easy trail. The river is fairly calm this stretch, and the trail offers overlooks and a few areas of river access. I only saw one other person on the trail, but parts of it skirt around a campground so there was a lot of noise and generator smells for that section. The rest the hike was very pleasant and easy. Good for walking, running, or biking.

This hiking trail was a really fun one. It does provide a bit of a challenge, but it makes up for it. I only have four stars because there were so many people. It really slowed down our hike because we had to keep stepping off trail for others to get through. There also seems to be an issue with the fellow hikers not following rules by not keeping their dogs leashed (as it says right at the beginning to keep them leashed). This caused a lot of issues with the dogs running past us and almost knocking us over.

easy, flat trail in mostly shaded forest with beautiful wildflowers and river views.

Beautiful views. Lots of different scenery. Accessible.
Make sure you're in good shape - can be a challenge.

Lake was beautiful! Trail was not great at all. Our gps took us to the atv trail on the east side. Found out after our very dusty climb that there was better access to the lake on the north side. We ended up hiking closer to 3 miles.

Enjoyed the hike - beautiful wildflowers! We hiked to the meadows... be prepared for a steady climb up and carry bug spray.

Used the trail to go trout fishing in the Box Canyon. The trail is a very beautiful trail and for parts of it follows the top of the canyon along the escarpment. Descending to the river can be tricky at times because of a steep inclines. It’s a beautiful stretch of river and a beautiful trail.

Don’t leave the trail without checking at the trail head where the Buffalo River joins the Henry’s Fork — there are two dams - one for The Buffalo and the Other for Henry’s Fork.

Nice hike along Big Elk Creek. We took our dog and he was able to cool off in the stream along the way. My GPS measured 6.3 miles to the creek crossing and trail split to Siddoway Fork and Neeley Cove. Stream was still moving swiftly so we didn't attempt to cross. The trail also appears to cross the Big Elk Creek at about mile 5+, but there is an optional trail up along the cliffs on the north side of the creek. It is a good trail, although a little rocky. Didn't see any animals, but there are plenty of wild flowers. Still, watch out for thistles!

Overall this was a pretty hike and camp but a few warnings: the bugs were absolutely terrible and gps had a hard time getting me there. I live in Idaho Falls and two different ways, gps wanted me to turn on a road that was private property. It was a struggle but I figured it out. Parking is good and the trail is well maintained but my goodness I have never seen so many horse flies and mosquitoes and this is coming from someone that grew up on a horse farm with mosquito breeding ponds. I was covered in spray and it didn’t help. My poor dogs have blood blisters all over them from all the bites. The entire hike we were just in a swarm. It was hard to enjoy the hike. We then camped. There are really nice camping spots with tables, bear boxes, and fire pits. I lit a fire in hopes of getting rid of bugs. Nope. We ended up hiding out in the tent the rest of the evening. It was very pretty but I probably wouldn’t recommend to anyone until bugs are dead.
