Second time on this trail, or rather, trails. This loop is actually three trails with a lot of branches and different trails you could take. Manalaha, Maliki and a trail whose name starts with a K are what actually make up this loop.
From the parking lot you start on a trail that goes along the road and through what appears to be a yard then to a little park with a Bathroom. Cross the bridge and go left, wind up a trail about 1/4 mile to where the trails actually start with a trail sign. I went left to the Manalaha Trail first, then at the top of the hill there are 4 different directions you can go. Go down hill that’s Makikj. Then follow it down until another branch in the trail. Go left again. This will take you full circle.
There are waterfalls, a lot of flowers and beautiful jungle.

easy low hazard hike. I find it easier to go to the right loop. About a 2 hour loop total

Nice hike! Took about 2 hours total coming in from Manoa Falls. Nice to get away from all the tourists.

Went counterclockwise as most people suggested. Steep going up and slippery coming down. Crampons were very useful as the return leg was quite muddy. A pleasant, shady hike. Took me about 2 hours at an easy pace.

Really great for baby wearing! Easy and scenic.

Nice trail with a really interesting change of foliage as you go along. It was kind of rainy and the trail was super muddy and slippery. Still doable, but wish I had brought old shoes instead! There are a lot of trails in this system- lots of great options!

Awesome, very unique hike! If bringing kids or pets, it would be much advised to wait until the weather has been dry for at least a few days. We did it the day after a small rain storm, but after about a week of a swell. The river was extremely high! There were actual rapids, making the crossing fairly difficult for adults. My son, aged 3, had to be carried across and the water reached to my stomach and was very fast moving. It was absolutely worth it, though!
With the extra high waters, it was hard in two spots to find the path. The map had a hard time pinpointing my location, so it was a very loose guide.
We LOVED it! Definitely recommend

Came in from the Manoa Falls trail entrance. The trailhead for Aihaulama is marked by a small brown sign. There are no trail blazes anywhere along the trail that I saw, mainly we just followed the path better traveled looking. Wear good (old) shoes. Very muddy and slippery. The side of the trail is steep and eroded in some places. The views above the bamboo (about halfway up) and then out into the valley (at the top) are really great and it is a pretty quiet and secluded trail for being so close to a major tourist attraction (the falls).

Very kid friendly, easy hike. Mosquitoes and mud, so come prepared with bug spray.

Easy hike with bamboo trees, captain cook pines, and stream with waterfall. Kid and pet friendly.

Beautiful trees, you have to walk through the water at the beginning. The trail gets pretty muddy in spots, bring bug spray and wipes to wipe your hands if you need too. Our family had a great time!

Tired of the monotony of getting dirty and having near death experiences trying to reach some jaw dropping view? This peaceful and beautiful walk through the woods can help break that up. Sadly there was not as much garbage to pick up as I'm used to, until detouring over to the 'Ualaka'a loop, where people seem to find it a more suitable environment to leave their trash behind. Say hello to the cats and chickens living in harmony in the parking lot.

It was ok. There was a chance to go through a creek and interesting to see the different types of tree.

Great hike! Definitely agree with some of the reviewers that rec. to go right to start with the steep uphill climb. At the top before going down definitely rec. to take the Moleka Trail. It’s a great out and back trail through a bamboo forest.

Very easy hike. Absolutely beautiful foliage.

Nice little hike. Parking on the street, take mosquito spray! Has a river crossing, my kids 8, 10 loved hopping over the slippery stones in the water. Path a little muddy but overall ok. Beautiful forest walk with very small waterfall. Took us about an hour but we walked VERY slow.

The path to the falls is blocked. I had to lie down & slip between fallen bamboo to get there. There are many broken/fallen trees at the bottom of the falls. There are no pools at the bottom.

A good view or two but not great

We took this trail from the Manoa Falls side. I liked the idea of parking there. Seems more secure. i've done the trail back to the falls at least a dozen times. Its very pretty. If you've never been here you should do this section. Its a must. Once we branched off to the Aihualama the traffic dropped off. We saw probable about a dozen people from that point one. The trail is easy to follow for the most part. There was one branch about 1/4 of the way in. I opened the all trails app just to make sure I was on the right branch. We went left. Generally speaking the trail with the most traffic will be the right one. The Aihualama dead ends into the loop. I think it is also known as the Pauoa Flatt's trail. We went left up to the look out. Great spot for pictures. We didn't close the loop instead went back down the way we came. We didnt budget enough time. Happy hour was calling.

Awesome view at the top! Worth the hike!

So awesome

Very muddy but it is the rain forest. Once you get to the end of Aihualama make a right at Pauoa Flats to see an epic view, you can continue on just make sure you have enough water.

Go right. Easier to go uphill steeply then downhill.

Took a quick hike in the Nu’uanu Valley. Definitely a rooty and slippery hike, but a beautiful forest hike which included crossing Nu’uanu Stream and then hike down to the waterfall and around. Circular trail has a branch which leads to a 3 mike trail to Manoa Falls. That was not in the plans for today...especially when it started raining and getting dark. Maybe another time. Still in shock someone left a dirt diaper behind for the trail cleanup crew. Gross!

Great trail for an easy hike in the shade. My dog loved this hike. There was a stream and a waterfall my dog cooled off in. Highly recommend.

Good work out. Brought our 7 month old dog and he seemed to love it. If you take the right side maunalaha trail, you will ascend up faster and be at the top in no time. Once at the top then its all downhill. If you want to ascend up slowly then take the left side to Kanealole trail. Its a loop that connects to other trails. Makiki valley trail is very shaded and beautiful. Bring some bug spray.

Not much of a view and lots of ants, but good variety in terrain and lightly trafficked
