Good little hike not to bad it gets muddy in the beginning if it rained but I would just plan to do it if your going to go to the beach right afterwards!

Just finished this hike and had a blast!

As others have said it's basically divided into three parts:

Part 1: The North Fork, which is the main trail, is mostly muddy jungle. There were a few downed trees when we were there, one was a really large Eucalyptus (I think?) that definitely made it confusing where the trail was. I was very happy to have my GPS with me for that segment.

I wouldn't take kids on this part unless they're experienced hikers.

Part 2: the gravely connective section of the trail is more like a decommissioned road and easy to traverse. If you take it North for a period of time you can snag some additional cool jungle views. Otherwise just take it South toward the road.

Part 3: The abandoned road. I thought this was freaking cool. It does totally feel like you're in a post-apocalyptic world and nature is taking back the mountain! You get some really awesome views of the wind turbines rising about the jungle and ocean. If you have kids that aren't going to be able to handle the entirety of the hike you could just do the road (be sure to keep them away from the edges that have fallen out!)

My Gaia track said that the whole hike, including our extra jaunt north and the road leading to it, was 7.83 miles and took us 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Decent little hike with a mediocre view of North Shore. The graffiti art up at the pillbox was my favorite part which somewhat speaks to the lack of difficulty or reward on this one. Good for the family or bringing the dogs.

Nice short hike that even my teenagers enjoyed. Which is saying a lot.

Short hike. Good view. Wild pigs. Not too much mud. Steep enough to get my heart beating.

We did this hike in the rain, took us a little over 2 hours. The first part of the hike ‘’jungle’’ is great, muddy, peaceful, amazing trees. Second part, ‘’rocky climb’’ is not bad, I think that you would have great valley views if it was a nice day. Third part, the ‘’post apocalyptic road’’ was cool, yet disappointing that you cover such a large distance on pavement.

Cute little hike. Not strenuous at all despite being muddy and slippery as hell (definitely one of those hikes where it takes longer to get down than up). Pretty views of the North Shore from the top of the pillbox and I recommend exploring inside.

Fairly easy trail that didn’t take more than 2 hours, got lost a few times but easily found our way back to the trail.

I gave this trail 5 stars because it is very beautiful, mostly shaded and great for a moderate hike. BUT it is way too hard for mountain biking.. Even for a professional mountain biker. Too many big, slippery roots crossing the path. along with slippery rocks and leaves. this is mainly the top half of the trail.

Very quick/easy trail for an awesome view of north shore! Be ready for the incline!

Quite a forest trail, do some research prior to taking it on as there are multiple, multiple paths to take throughout the Pupukea Forest. A Mountain cyclists dream come true, as most of the trails are geared for bikes.

I liked how much of the windward side of the island I saw from the peak. Rabbit island and Makapu’u to the south and the mountains to the north that border Kualoa ranch. I went when it was overcast and it was an enjoyable hike.

Just did this hike. It was a nice trail, well maintained; about 1/2 was on a road. It was a little rainy today so I didn’t want to deal with anything too slippery. This fit the bill. Only a few slick spots. It was very easy to follow. Not sure how someone could get off track. Lots of wild orchids. The biggest disappointment was that I was hoping for more eye candy. There was only a view of the north shore at the peak and a couple of spots on the return. The forest and gulches were beautiful, but I was hoping for views of the Bonnzai Pipeline. Would need to do the Ehukai pill box hike for that.

Very disappointing to read about all the car break ins that occur. This seems to happen at just about every hike I have read about.

The only reason I'm marking this one at 1 star is because we didn't actually take the hike outlined. There is a spot where the road forks and you either climb over a gate to the right or duck under a flag-marked line to the left. TAKE THE LEFT FORK. We accidentally took the right fork and ended up a good 6 miles out away from where we wanted to be. It's an easy mistake to make if you don't have a good map, because both forks look very well travelled and like they could be a hiking trail.

Great run on the trails today. Ran up to trailhead from Sunset and got several miles in on trails. Awesome.

Great hike to see the sunset!

Great family hike! The pictures were very helpful in picking this hike. The views were great, the forest shade was nice, and the moderate beginning challenged everyone in a good way. My kiddos are 4, 6, 8, and 10 and didn't complain at all.

Esforço legal, vista muito bonita. Somente umas árvores que atrapalham um pouquinho. Vale a pena!

Steep, initially yes. The steps and ropes help in some places. The view from pill box 1 is beautiful. We tried to take the loop at the top, but couldn't find the turn from the road - it's confusing at the junction of 3 roads - so came back the same way. (Some blazes mark a side trail the used by mountain bikers.) It was pleasant nonetheless. Once back by the beginning of the road found the other end of the loop, but it's obscure. Use the map on this site to keep from going off trail. It began to rain as we began our downhill return. The mud, rocks and roots get slippery fast with very little moisture. A walking stick might have saved me from my fall. Not a flip-flop hike although there were plenty of people in them.

Trail is very pretty with some cool trees. There is a neat bunker at the top that you can walk in. The trail is not marked well and I ended up taking a different trail for a while.

Just finished this hike. It's VERY steep and slippery from the mud so take a trekking pole or stick if you have one. Use the rocks to stop your feet from sliding and hold on to the trees that line the trail for balance and to help you lift yourself up. You'll need your hands so be sure to take your belongings in a backpack or leave them in your car. Once pass the steep muddy stretch you'll see a picnic table that has a view of the beach. Rest here if you need to but from that point you're only a few minutes from the Pillbox. The trail splits off to the right which I didn't venture off to since no other hikers were going that way. The view from the Pillbox is nice and it's super breezy up there. I'd recommend doing this hike with at least one other person because you may need to help each other on the muddy sections. Overall it's a great hike for beginners. I'd definitely do it again.

The hiking trail wasn’t clearly marked and I don’t feel like I got in the full 9+ miles, but still a great area to trek around. The whole area is a network of walking/biking/atv trails.

It’s mostly woods and bike trails, so unfortunately no epic views, but I think it’d make for a great nature walk/zen session. The only steep/difficult areas (for hiking) are the entrance/exit and the specifically biking areas, so strongly recommend for those who are looking to get into/new to hiking.

Seems like a great place to take the dogs.

Reasonably easy trail made somewhat challenging by slick mud when there have been recent rains. Great views of the northwest end of the island and surfers down below as well as two interestingly graffitied pillboxes. Can be a bit of a challenge to find the trail from the first pillbox to the second but just follow the ridge downward, keeping in mind that pillboxes were placed strategically on the ridge overlooking the ocean.

Nice simple hike and a beautiful view of the ocean

Overall, excellent hike for a family. We took our 5 year old daughter and 7 year old son and they made it the whole way...in the rain. However, we had 4 pig hunting dogs come up behind us on the trail which scared me a tad considering I had my kids with me. But they didn’t bother us. Maybe not the best place to hunt for pigs and this is a fairly well trekked hike.

Great view
