Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area is a 384-acre park located approximately 12 miles from Waikiki. Keawa Heiau is located at the park entry. Continue along the paved park road to the campgrounds, picnic areas, and trailhead for the 'Aiea Loop Trail. Groves of Norfolk pines and eucalyptus trees create a forest recreation environment on the hills above the town of 'Aiea and Pearl Harbor. A resident caretaker near the front gate should be contacted in the event of emergencies.

We started out early @ 7:15am. Definitely less traveled at that time of day. It rained a bit yesterday so the trail was a tinsy mushy but doable in durable boots/shoes. The views are beautiful along the path. Be sure to take a few of the small jaunts off the trail for the best views!

We hiked this trail with our 6 year old, and we all had a good time. It’s not too difficult but it was raining a little and the mud was deep and slippery during half the trail. Wear old/resistant clothes and be prepared to ruin your sneakers. Bring some wet wipes in case you slip in the mud. There are three stopping points with benches.

9/30/2018-Started hiking about 0745 and met 13 groups/solo hikers along the way. The weather was better than expected and not super humid as it has been for the last week or so. The trail was mostly dry but some areas had sticky mud. All in all it was a good adventure!

Really enjoyed this trail. When it has rained it is a bit slick, but when dry, it is very nice.
Certain areas were soft enough to even go barefoot which I truly love.

Amazing views. Slippery and muddy in quite a few areas

I hike this often, and difficulty always depends on how wet it is, as all the mountain trails here. This one has some great valley views and very interesting trees and fauna along the way, including some strawberry guava trees that form shady tunnels in some areas, and you can pick and eat them for a great vitamin C source and boost! Though it may lack the great coastal views of some mountain hikes, it makes up for it with it's interesting foliage, including steep fern valleys with giant twisted koa and other giants among the vast greenery! I personally love this trail, especially the west side of loop,(which I often go up and down)

Easy hike

Great trail with some nice views from the summit. However, the half the of the loop coming back was currently closed due to construction. Overall it was a great time. Moderate difficulty is accurate, however I would say it could bump to hard when it rains, as it did today for us.

Fairly moderate with no real gradients. Very muddy at the moment but slippery rather than deep. Very peaceful and great when it’s hot out as it’s fairly covered. Pigs are damaging some of the trail and I saw a fairly large one at the 4 mike mark. Worth doing for a quick outing.

Great trail, though it’s longer than listed. My app said it was 5.6 miles for the loop. Starting at the lower parking lot helped.

The views aren’t super fantastic there but it’s a great nature outing nonetheless. The trail itself isn’t difficult it’s just pacing yourself to make sure you make it haha. Lots of species of plants (im a botanist so im biased) to ooh and aah at plus the trail is great for groups and dogs.

Beautiful trail with lots of tree coverage! Definitely a trail that submerse’s you in Hawaii’s more realistic, naturally beautiful forest. From the trail you can see the highway in some spots, which is beautiful unlike L.A.’s highways, and Honolulu. I can see what people mean when they talk about a muddy trail if it’s rainy because I did this trail with my husband during a dry day and the trail was still muddy where the sun doesn’t reach. I love greenery and that’s what this hike had! Trail head is obvious if you drive all the way to the top of the paved road.

Longer hike with no real payoff. Brief views of the highway but that’s about all. The path can get fairly narrow and if it’s rained recently will be very muddy.

This is a beautiful trail. I love the trees and terrain. I got some beautiful pictures. Just very serene for me. It was muddy in a few spots but not too bad today. For me this was an easy hike but I’m an avid hiker, hike recorded at 4.8 miles with 1335 elevation gain. There are som narrow spots but not too bad. Nice morning hike.

Nice trail but really muddy . . Beautiful view of h3. . Took us about 2 hours going at a casual speed . . Definitely better with hiking shoes . . Not a hard trail but narrow paths might make it difficult for young kids . .

It is a very easy, kid/dog friendly hike. Surrounded by lots of trees. A hike I would recommend for family day.

A great trail! Bring the family and pets on this one! Be respectful of this trail there is memorial for soldiers who died in this forest. The views of the H3 and pearl harbor from the top are well worth the trek. Be careful if it has recently rained , the trail can be quite muddy! Bring lots of water. Hiking shoes highly recommended.

Great trail ... I ran it in just under an hour. It was muddy and I fell once. If you walk at a moderate pace expect to take a couple hours.

7/4/2018-Started on the trail about 0730 and ran into 17 groups/solo hikers; couple of them brought their dog and one group had remote controlled toy monster trucks driving through. Trail was a little muddy but the overall weather was nice. Especially with the breeze rushing through the area! Easily made it with 1L of water and don’t forget sunscreen!

The trail is muddy. No way around it. Bring a change of shoes. Most of the trail is joggable even though it's very slippery. A great workout! Good for a hot day, lots of shade.

Awesome trail. Took my two boys. It’s a bit muddy but all’s well. Has beautiful scenery along the way. One thing no one suggests is to park at the bottom and start there. If not, it’s a bit of a trek back up to your car.

Great place to enjoy a leisurely hike. Even midday heat during summer, which is usually fairly stifling, was mitigated by the beautiful airiness of this well covered path. Wife and I tried to tackle a little much for the entire loop and added some portions of the Aieia ridge and Kalauoa Falls trail (going counterclockwise; don’t recommend it as it is not well developed this way) before settling on doing the rest of the regular loop. Altogether, even adding another mile or so, it took only three hours. Highly recommend.
