Lodging, picnicking and easy family nature hike (0.7-mile loop trail) in a native 'ohi'a forest at a 2000-foot elevation. Trail passes through the beginnings of an arboretum of the Island's native plants. Additional trails in the adjoining forest reserve, including a 2-mile horse loop trail.

Lush, damp, muddy but beautiful. Nice, easy short loop walk through rainforest and learn about native plants and trees along the trail. Pick up booklet provided at the trailhead is a must. The trail is well-marked. Wear well thread shoes, long pants and long sleeves shirt to protect you from mosquitoes and be prepared for the rain.

The nature trail, botanical garden, picnic area and the mountain hikes at Kalopa offer something for everyone! This is an underused gem of the island. Bring shoes that can tolerate a sometimes muddy terrain and mosquito repellant. Wear layers as —with many places in Hawaii— the weather may change rapidly. When we hiked (July) the wild ginger was in bloom on the perimeter trail and it was heavenly. Another tip: until AllTrails lists the other hiking trails, I recommend taking a photo of the map at the trailhead for navigation. The old growth Eucalyptus in this forest is Ent-like. Be prepared to be in awe.

Nice walk through native forest with explanatory booklet. Quite muddy but worth it.

Very easy and well marked

No one around. Lush, dense rainforest. Trails in pretty good shape with good signs (although AllTrails app was still key at times). We didn't do the route shown on this page, but did a different 2 mile loop.

Easy, yet so beautiful and peaceful. If it's wet, be careful as you can slip and fall.

Great hike with kids. We went with a 6 & 2 year old and it was just the right length. Interactive trail, with the info pamphlet at the start that talks about the forest. My 6 year old enjoyed scouting the white tree markings that are trail indicators. Lots of birds, lush surroundings, cooler temps, beautiful park, bring a picnic and make a day of it. The trail was a little muddy and there are mosquitoes, but neither were too bothersome.
