One of Floridas oldest parks, opening to the public in 1931, this park was established when local citizens came together to promote the hammock as a candidate for national park status. During the Great Depression, just prior to World War II, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) developed additional park facilities and the beginnings of a botanical garden. Many visitors enjoy bicycling the scenic 3-mile loop drive or hiking along the parks nine trails. An elevated boardwalk traverses an old-growth cypress swamp. For equestrians, there is an 11-mile, day-use trail. Picnicking is another popular activity as are ranger-guided tours of the park. Highlands Hammock offers a full-facility campground, as well as a youth/group tent campground. A full-service restaurant is located on the park grounds. For schedule and catering information, call (863) 385-7025. A recreation hall is available for rental, as are several picnic pavilions. A museum showcasing the history of the CCC is open 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Located on County Road 634, four miles west of Sebring.

A beautiful trail with lots of birds and other wildlife sightings. Views include ancient cypress and towering old citrus trees. Just one of several incredible trails within the Highlands Hammock State Park.

I always see the most wildlife on this trail.

Great easy walk, great vegetation-including palms, pines, orange trees (with oranges), no Alligator(s)-did spot an Armadillo burrowing in the soft soil near the roadway entrance!

Peaceful ride, lots of cool wildlife to see. They have bike rentals there at a very reasonable price if you want to ride. Very nice staff

Decent trails. Trail "lengths" in minutes is a bit overrated.. Was done with most in just slightly over half the time it allotted per trail. Bugs were terrible.

Great trails for hiking and great primitive camping!

Tuesday, July 05, 2016

Great trails, all well maintained. Did all of the loop trails with ease. Camped in the primitive camping area and hiked starting from our site out to the bike path and made a full loop back to the camp site.

Highlands Hammock has lots of very flat, easy trails. Some are long and some are shirt. It's a great place to hike!

Did all 5 short loop trails. All were well-kept and we saw otter, alligators and woodpeckers.

Very nice for a Florida trail. Fun walk ways and plenty of alligator sightings! We saw a mama sunbathing with three or four babies on her.
