Machimoodus State Park overlooks the beautiful Salmon River in East Haddam, Connecticut. A network of three ponds is nestled near the entrance abutting fields mowed for the benefit of the summer wildflowers. Picnic tables are sprinkled throughout the area. Further into the 300 acre park, old roads and trails take the visitor to picturesque and grand overviews of both the Moodus River and Salmon River Cove.

This was our 14th hike on the 2018 CT DEEP Skys the Limit Challenge! Nice, easy hike for our final challenge hike except for the upper to lower vista connector (steep downhill ... I would have preferred the steep uphill climb!). Views from the lower vista are much better than upper vista (too much overgrowth blocking the views).

Nice trail. A few steep inclines to tackle. Some sections are overgrown near the river. But overall we’d hike it again.

Easy trail that is basically a road except for the upper vista connector. Lower vista has better views. Both vistas need to be cut back. Picnic tables everywhere. Nice pond for the dogs to swim in.

It was a good hike. The first half was pretty flat the second half had some very steep parts.

I did the Vista loop on a June morning. I found much serenity. Well maintained. Diverse scenery for a park of its size. Meadows at one end and ledge with overlooks at the other. Glimpses of Salmon Cove and the East Haddam bridge.
