With 12 ski areas, 10 mountain peaks over 14,000 feet, 2,500 miles of trails, eight Wilderness areas, 1,900 miles of forest roads, and 2.3 million acres of nature, it is easy to see why White River National Forest is the most visited forest in the United States. Visitors to these Colorado public lands can see Dillon, Ruedi, Homestake, and Green Mountain reservoirs, check out the ski resorts, hit up the hiking trails up one of the 14ers (Castle Peak, Grays Peak, Torreys Peak, Capitol Peak, Maroon Peak, Snowmass Mountain, Pyramid Pea, Mount of the Holy Cross) many of which are in the famous Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, check out the White River, and look out for elk, mountain goats, bobcat, and lots of other wildlife in the Rocky Mountains. Hanging Lake is another enormously popular attraction in the forest. This forest makes a great trip from Central Colorado cities like Vail, Aspen, or Glenwood Springs.

Summited on 1/24/2018.
Could have used snow shoes at the base, but I was able to push through with just Microspikes. I only saw two other people and was the only one at the top when I summited. Awesome views and defiantly worth the effort.

I have done this one a few times this winter. It is a great hike if you don't want to see any one. Bring your Microspikes or snowshoes, especially the snow shoes if it has just snowed, not manny people hike this trail and it can get deep in areas.

I arrived around 8am last Saturday and had the lake to myself for nearly 30 minutes. Two other people arrived as i headed down. Very rewarding hike and not to difficult. Bring yaktrax and arrive early.

Nice elevation gain in short span, but nothing too bad. Started early to beat the crowds. Only 2 people at the lake when I arrived. Beautiful, stunning and peaceful! On the way down, I passed by at least 100 people or so.

Feb 19 2018 hike. Started at 4am. Super windy. Had a ton of struggles with the crampons that I was using. Saw a Snow White ptarmigan! It was awesome!

Made it to false summit around 7am. Was freezing cold and getting blown down. The wind was fierce. Decided to head back. Made it back around 8:45am.

The snow was pretty crunchy.

One of my favorite trails, although very heavy trafficked. A pretty steep incline but the view of the lake is ABSOLUTELY worth it! Don't forget to check out the waterfall up and behind the lake and many people miss!

Snowshoed out to Section House hut, trail is packed and visible. Skis or snowshoes are advised.

Yak tracks are recommended in the winter. Absolutely gorgeous at the top!

Absolutely beautiful. Didn't make it anywhere near the falls though as we ended up waist-deep in snow! Still a great workout though!

Great little hike.

Very easy to get to, amazing views and very quiet and peaceful for how close it is to the highway. Went in August 2017. Like anywhere in the mountains, best to get there early to avoid afternoon storms (and light crowds if that's not your thing).

Great snowshoeing and cross country skiing area. Not too steep and very stunning views! Plenty of powder and moderately tracked out; even better if you can scramble up to the ridge!

Gorgeous trail, worth the climb year-round. Mid December I used my micro spikes since snowshoes weren’t needed. Dress in layers! Warm on the way up but hanging out by the falls and coming down gets chilly and damp.

Very nice, quiet trail through the trees. Isolated from the busy area of Breckenridge. We caught it on a fresh powder day which was perfect for snowshoeing. The markings to stay on trail were a little hard to follow so we broke trail for our own adventure.

It was very slippery with ice covering most of the trail. Lots of traffic came in around 10:30am as we were leaving.

This was a great challenge with a huge payoff!

Beautiful views! Of course, it was the Super Blue Blood Moon, so I was destined to be gorgeous! Light/easy hike, and as of January 30th, the snow is packed on trail so bring microspikes..

great views but usually over crowded
