Hiked this trail with my wife and two kids (16,7). The trail is very steep in some places but doable. Coming down is actually more challenging with the loose rocks. Still some snow on the trail towards the top but very manageable.

Great hike with easy access from 70. Clear trail and views from summit are great.

I came here to say that whoever says “all the snow is melted now”-they’re lying- it’s not! Lmao. Maybe the previous hikers weren’t aware of where the trail really ends, but once you turn left to head to the end of the trail there’s several feet of snow. You can walk on top of it if you come early enough, and keep your eyes open for others foot steps. Great challenge to start off the season. Poles recommend for surviving the snow lol

June 9th - Great trail with plenty of incline. Views at summit are amazing. Trail was dry. There was a tiny bit of snow on the trail with a little run off, but is a non factor - this trail is ready to go. Well worth the trip. You can easily step around what snow is left! Posted recording.

Good views at top but incline hike majority of way up. Not for the faint of heart. Peak 1 and Victoria still have at least 1-2 feet of snow.

Path is dried out. Cool view of the avalanche debris.

Trail was great today, however there was a little snow and fallen pine. A good incline too and careful coming down, the dry rocks are slippery. Really beautiful view at the top though, totally worth it!!

Wow this trail was hard! I loved it!!! So rewarding. The views , just wow. Totally worth the work up. It is pretty much a straight incline to the top with very few switch backs . I recommend doing it! Try to stay positive and happy on the way up and it makes for a lot more fun of an experience.

Breathtakingly beautiful short but sweet hike. As of 6/7 I was able to make it all the way to the top. You’ll encounter some snow about 3/4 of the way up but the trail is highly visible and packed down. You can walk in previous hikers’ footprints to avoid sinking. Don’t turn back if it gets slushy it is 100% doable! The trail disappears once you get near the top and turns into a bunch of rocks, helpful to open the map in the app to guide you to the peak. Amazing views at the top!

Absolutely beautiful and challenging, albeit short hike. Very steep in sections. As of today, 6/4, there was still a decent bit of snow at the top. It is starting to turn slushy and my feet / legs were consistently falling through. Sometimes up to about knee height. Even with that, very doable, I was only wearing hiking shoes. Views at the top are definitely worth the hike!

Really fun and tough hike! Went today 5/31 with just boots and was very doable. Snow towards the top but it was pretty packed down and not too slushy. The views at the top are totally worth it!

Hiked on 5/26. Snowy near the top but packed down enough that micro spikes were enough. Pretty steep hike but great views at the top.

Moderate hike, with some good views overlooking Frisco. Worth it to keep going up to Mount Victoria.

Just a correction to the previous review made by Charles George. The entire upper portion of Mt Royal was not wiped out. There is a small section (about the halfway point) that was slightly affected by an avalanche. Do not proceed up the avalanche strip, if you do you will be way off the trail. You can pick the trail back up about 20 to 25 yards up the avalanche strip. The trail is easy to find just to the right (you just have to know where to look). I have been up to the top of Royal several times this week - beautiful as ever.

washed out

Hiked this trail on 3/22, we did it with snow shoes but saw several others in just boots. Good trail, well marked, very steep in places. First 30 minutes were great, but the entire top half of the trail was washed out by an avalanche.

I saw so many different animal tracks. Very few people on the trail. Very tough incline. Towards the end of the trail, the trekking in the snow became difficult as I kept falling in the snow as each step wasn't solid flooding and I would be knee to hip deep in snow. I wore cleats for the hike and layered up. I would definitely recommend this hike!

Great winter trail. Gets a bit slippery at the top so cleats or snow shoes are useful.

Hiked it on thanksgiving day. Snow packed, a few icy patches. If you go to the top, trail is not packed with deep snow. Recommend poles and yak tracks unless you have great agility, which I don’t.

Nice little local trail. Packed snow, put on snowshoes about halfway up with the stepper inclines ... microspikes would have been good as well.

Great views!!

Loved it! Went around 6:30am to watch the sun rise. It was fantastic! Very little snow on the ground, just towards the top and I was fine in my sneakers and light layers. However, it is quite steep in areas, with lots of loose gravel that makes coming down a little challenging. (I only fell once! Haha!) Love the peak area, lots of places to sit and enjoy the view on all sides! I’ll definitely be doing this one again!

STEEP! But fun

Difficult incline but doable with a good amount of breaks. Really beautiful view at the top (not much of a lake view, mostly able to see the lake on the ascend/descend parts).

Beautiful hike! I hiked in a considerable amount of snow; about 4-6 inches around mile 2 and increasing to a foot or more around mile 3.5-4! The trail through the snow stopped short of the pass and I didn't have the gear to break new snow trail, so didn't make it to the pass. The highway noise fades away after the first mile and then it was silent!

This hike is one of my favorites. The beginning of the trail is lined with many dead trees. But, the ground cover and aspens are gorgeous in the fall! There is about a mile of steep incline. Otherwise the trail is fairly moderate. The last lake is about a mile from the first lake, but it is definitely worth the time and steps!

Out of shape and from Iowa, this trail challenged me at times and overall a great hike. steady incline all the way up. Rain and snow the entire time but the cloudy view at the top was still amazing with the snow covered trees.
