awesome hike, lots of trees down on trail

Fairly steep trail, with lots of sun, so I recommend starting early. No views early on, but once you climb past the tree line everything opens up. We turned around at the waterfall in sight of the mine because the snow bridge covering the water didn't look particularly safe, but others had evidently been crossing it. Sticks are highly recommended, especially for going down -- very steep and sliding is a problem. No snow on the trail except at the waterfall.

Trailhead is open. Beautiful hike with stunning views! Make sure you bring trekking poles or a walking stick for the descent!

This is ONE of the BEST hiking trails in Colorado. The description says its an out and back but you can turn it into a loop trail by connecting it with Mill Creek Trail and back down to Highway 145 and back to Telluride. Great chance to see herd of Elk high up in the alpine meadows. If you want to get away form people and the crowds, this is the trail. Once you get up above Pack Basin, the crowds drop out. Cross over the pass into Mill Creek Basin and be sure to rest at the pass for incredible views. Once you start to descend Mill Creek Basin be sure to stop and enjoy the waterfall right about tree line. And you get terrific views across the valley to Mt. Wilson plateau.

Definitely one of my favorite passes in Colorado. I lived there for about 7 years and have traveled over many. This one is not difficult at all with the exception of a spot or three. A must is a side trip from Camp Bird to the west up to the base of Mt Sneffels and the high alpine lakes there. IF your lucky and are there end of July early August you might catch the wildflower explosion. On a good snow pack year it might not be clear until end of July. On July 4th, they have the July 4th Ski Race at summit of the pass. Fun event.

FYI trailhead is still closed. About a mile hike from the parking lot to the trailhead.

I've hiked seven 14ers so far. This was my least favorite, but still worthwhile. I approached from Matterhorn Creek TH, as I also climbed Wetterhorn the same day.

The people I met on the trail were great!

Big exposure on top if you want it! Don't trip or slip!

This was my first 14er and was perfect for that, as there is less elevation gain than most and the trail is gentle. It was far more impressive scenery-wise than I expected. I've hiked 6 other 14ers since and while some others offered more interesting scrambling, wilder exposure, and so on, none quite matched the visual beauty of this hike. I did it in the late afternoon after a big morning thunderstorm, which is unusual, so I got the beautiful late light, which contributed to my experience greatly.

Lots of friendly marmots!

Don't hesitate to give this a go!

Very scenic, with tight switchbacks. I've driven Black Bear several times. Yes, you must aware of your surroundings, but you don't need to air down or need a spotter. Your on a Mountain made of rock and can't get stuck, unless mechanically deficient.

Bring a camera and a lunch. Bridal Falls is a must! You drive past it toward the end. Enjoy the scenic views and bask in the beauty of Colorado! I've done Hole in the Rock in Utah. There you must air down. Very steep crevices.

Fairly easy trail but one of our favorites in the area. We did it in a stock jeep unlimited sport with no problems. Great views. Passes by the waterfall they use in the Coors commercials.

Great trail lots to see not very hard, some off angle places that want to take it slow, I almost rolled my Jeep due to my own ignorance of playing around

Great trail, awesome views and not as hard as people make it out to be if you pay attention to the trail

Day after thanksgiving. Trail was pretty dry gorgeous views!

I hiked this beautiful trail on 10/14 after driving up from phoenix the night before. With perfect weather, I was confused why I only saw 1 other hiker the entire day! Spotted a fox and some pikas. I would recommend an ice axe to be secure in the section before the saddle. No snow past the saddle (albeit I turned around at the false summit), but lots of loose rock. So be mentally prepared to slide when coming down. The road to the TH is pretty rough for 2WD. Just before big bear creek (which was very low), there was a giant pothole taking up the road filled with water. With the right vehicle, I would imagine it would be fun! But I parked immediately after that and hiked the remaining distance to the TH.

Incredible hike, stunning views... can't wait to do this again!!!

Lots of elevation gain for an absolutely breathtaking view on top. Ran into a red fox, which was cool. Most challenging and rewarding hike I've done so far.

Great hike with fantastic views! Steep and narrow in some areas but easily navigable. A must do if in Ouray.

Gorgeous scenery. Easy for high clearance Jeep.loved it.

Great trail with huge views! Agree with Tom and Alison's review, below, that the description and map are confusing. Out and back distance of 16 miles from Lizard Head Pass to junction with Cross Mountain Trail (below Lizard Head Peak), then back, sounds about right. But although there's plenty of uphill, elevation gain is nothing close to 5900 feet - map shows it's about half that, and that's what it felt like to me.
Saw nice flock of White-winged Ptarmigans - rather than taking flight at my approach, they "hid" from me, just a few feet away, some of them hunkered down right in the trail. Cool!

Beautiful Jeep road, and I mean BEAUTIFUL! Not super difficult but a couple parts might get you if you have a fear of steep drop offs. We have done all the trails around Ouray and this is our favorite. Make time to sit by Lake Como and take it all in!

Unique hike, with a cool foot bridge

Heavy 1 ft snow at the top
Too difficult for a stock
Had to return from just .5 miles from the top
Will be back for sure

Beautiful views but you need to be a confident off roader without a fear of heights. Tight steep switchbacks are tricky.

Awesome hike. It's definitely tough though. I hike on a regular basis and thought this one earned its rating. Uphill the entire time. However, the views of Ouray, Mt. Sneffels and the rest of the canyon are fantastic and continue to improve the higher you go. The cherry on top is the waterfall before you hit the mine at the end. Really enjoyed this one. Took about 3.5 hours for me. I started early afternoon and didn't see another hiker the entire time!

Gorgeous trail-completely worth the climb. My husband and I did the Blue Lakes Pass route, which, although longer, has incredible views and is well worth the extra couple of hours. I wrote a complete trip report if you're interested in seeing photos and getting more information on trail conditions, gear, and general tips and tricks : http://borntobewandering.com/2017/09/15/the-ultimate-guide-to-mt-sneffels/

fantastic place to get away from society. My dad and I spent a week here backpacking and the trails were great and there is plenty of spots to get water. Slide Lake isn't really a lake anymore but it's great hiking. And the fishing is good. caught some rainbows and brookies.
