Great trail. We did it East to West which meant that we went downhill on the West side of the summit and the rocky road. Had our 4x4 Tacoma in 4Lo and 1st gear crawling down the rocky slopes - no problem. Very nice views and spots for photos.

Started from Silverton and came up the CR2 from the end of town.

Quite a bumpy road towards the end, so air down at Silverton (we aired down in Anmias forks).

The ghost town is cool and there's plenty of places to park there.

This is a great jumping off spot for other trails as there's a number of different routes out.

Historic mining town, now abandoned. There's a fair bit of history around this area and well worth delving into before you come here, so you can appreciate what you're seeing.

Given some of the trails round here were used to carry ore out of the area and other mining activities, you have to marvel at the people who lived and worked here in times past.

Mostly a maintained road along the Animas River. Started at mine and drove to Silverton. Was last leg of day long drive.

The views are incredible here. I did west to east.

On my way up 2 people had popped tires going east to west so I suggest driving slow! The first few miles were steep and knuckle clenching on the shelf. Basically climbing over large rocks. I have a 4x4 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and we bottomed a few times and had to almost gun it to get out in a spot. I’ll post pics once back.

Once you pass the top you’re out of the rock scrambling, and as another user mentioned is minivan worthy.

Such an amazing drive over the San Juan mountains. I recommend going from Ophir to the Million Dollar Highway because climbing the rocks is much easier than braking down the whole pass.

Easy driving trail. Several places to pass. Maybe one moderate area near top but nothing crazy. I like doing this trail in the evening, great sunsets make for amazing pictures.

Went west to east. There's a bit of climbing early on then it gets extremely narrow, steep, and you're bouncing over relatively large rocks. I was carrying a lot of extra weight with camping gear in my 4runner so that climb was a slow, steady pace. After you get over the pass you're quickly on an easy minivan road.

Easy driving with amazing views. The ghost town was so cool. There are also a few vault toilets along the way.

Drove most of Trail in high range. Climbed during rain, so used low range to negotiate some rocky areas. There are two lakes, and the trail ends at the second lake. Map shows it going past, but map is wrong. Abandon mine about 2/3 up, entrance blocked with boulders.

Only ran a partial way up, late afternoon and not enough time to do it all. Ran 2 wheel drive, high clearance is needed breathtaking views and saw about a dozen other vehicles.

great trail with a couple of waterfalls and an amazing lake at almost 12000 feet.

Great jeep trail with awesome views. The trail is fairly easy with a high clearance vehicle. 4x4 recommended - though I saw a Subaru Outback and a Toyota Rav 4 on the trail. Many rough spots, semi-wide switch backs. Of course the views are what make this trail incredible and Clear Lake is a beautiful spot to relax and meditate, hike around, and take some wild flower photos. Very serene!

Drove this pass 4th of July, went over to Silverton from Telluride and back. Great trip! There are very large and pointy rocks on the shelf in several spots, so I was pretty concerned about my tires. My rig handled it fine though. I drive an all wheel drive Yukon. Beautiful photo ops.

Trail open for the season. As others mentioned not to technical but driving a skinny rocky trail and meeting oncoming traffic can be intimidating for novice drivers and passengers

Great easy off-road trail. 1 downed tree that was easy to pass under in my wrangler. Stopped about half a mile to the lake due to snow about 3 feet deep covering the remainder of the road. Hiked to the lake and it is currently completely frozen over. Few washouts on the trail at the start of each switchback you will have to straddle to get up in a vehicle. 4 wheel drive recommended but wasn’t needed in the Jeep. Medium clearance would be my suggestion. Plenty of rocks in the road but only had to move one to make it with no scrapes.

Went up the trail 5/14/2018 during a perfect sunny warm day. The spring of 2018 was extremely dry so the climb up was overall pretty easy and dry. Came across a few down trees during the climb but our Land Rover Discovery fit under them with a few inches to spare. I assume the trail isn’t cleared very often. As we approached the summit we came across some drifted snow which blocked the trail as well as a fair amount of 1-3’ rocks that had fallen on the trail so we hike the last section up to the falls. Beautiful scenery and long range views. Great trail but as you reach the summit the trail narrows however there a several places to pull off on the way up. Passed only one other truck on the climb. Had a great time, great trail.

I have done this trail several times, I live near Chicago and drive to CA every year for business. Every year I do some trails in route and Ophir, usually my first of the season. It is a good road for me to get my off road juices flowing for the rest of the trip, it is easy, scenic & fun.

Fun jeep trail. Not technical but the drop offs can be intimidating for people who aren't used it.
