Very Rocky trail, so watch your footing if you're running! The shade on the west side was heaven (if you go early enough to catch it!), otherwise, lots of sun with only a few sparse trees along the way for shade. overall nice, moderate trail!

We cut this trail a bit short, but for being so close to town and getting away from horsetooth traffic, this is a nice hike for locals.

this trail is about 6 miles, not 4.8 but very enjoyable when cooler.

I loved this trail! Beautiful views and wonderful flowers. There is no shade at all so bring sunscreen and plenty of water

Went for a trail run. There were some nice dirt parts and some more difficult rocky parts of the trail. As others suggest, there isn’t much shade, but what was expected? Great views from the top of Devil’s backbone, Horsetooth Reservoir, and Fort Collins. I didn’t adhere completing the trail AllTrails laid out and ran closer to six miles by hoping on the Alt Line trail for a bit. There were a handful of other people out, but sparsely separated on the trail.

no shade on trail. lots of dogs were let off leash when we went. we did see rattlesnakes so be cautious! long walk in to get to where you are actually climbing pretty but not one of my favorites

What I wonderful afternoon hike through the meadows around the foothills of the Rockies. Not too many people, however all of them are friendly. I give it a big thumbs up

Great hike for kids, great views of both the reservoir and town. Popular hike but not bad on a Sunday afternoon. The trail can be rocky at times so bring good shoes. Oh and sunscreen !

Solid trail close to home, or if you're staying downtown in FC. Quick and easy, not too difficult.

Breezy day in NoCo today. Good outing with the dog. Trail was open and dry.

Not much elevation gain but beautiful hike. Great for beginner to intermediate!

Some mud and snow today

1 week since snow, only a few muddy spots.

Fantastic views on the ridge even in the winter. As a newcomer, I cannot wait to hike this trail in the summer. Trails had a light dusting of snow, so it wasn’t bad with boots. But it gets pretty rocky, so be careful.

This is a great, easy and simple hike. If I had to do it again, I would access it via Michaud street vs Overland because the extra walk on the flat windy plain wasn’t really worth it. In the winter the switchbacks aren’t always visible so we ended up making almost a full second loop, but it was easy to get back on track. The view once you crest the ridge is spectacular looking down on the northern end of Horsetooth and seeing the north dam. It is windy and exposed here so plan accordingly.

Did trail on January 27, 2019 with a group. We did an add on by going on an extra loop with the Foothills trail down and up for a total hike of 5 miles. Weather was great with temps 30-40 degrees and no wind. Trail is sometimes rocky and had patches of snowpack. Later on started to get muddy. Elevation gain is gradual and trail is generally easy. Nice views of Ft. Collins and Horsetooth Reservoir. A good winter day hike.

Easy trail with a moderate climb to start. Nice views and moderately trafficked. Horses, mountain bikers and hikers.

This is a great, easy-to-moderate hike. As stated, it’s really rocky, so wear shoes that support your ankles. The ridge can get quite breezy, so keep that in mind as well, especially in winter. Really nice views of Fort Collins and snow-covered foothills. I got 6 miles total as well, not 4.8.

Nice little trail. Pretty rocky in some places so you need to keep your head down in parts. I would say it isn’t marked that well. We were on the main trail and ended up at 6.5 miles so I’m not sure where the 4.8 is coming from.

I love this trail. I walk it a lot and love watching the changing foliage over the seasons. Sometimes you have to share the trail with bikers/

I agree with Dixie!!! Okay, here is my review- Bathroom- YES, at start of hike TRAIL- starts flat and gradually builds near side of mountain Poop from wild animals/horses is on the trail... My dog and friend’s dog loved this trail. The flat at start was great to warm it up and get started. The hike up the hill wasn’t too bad, but I did get sweaty. The top is gorgeous!! Take a pic of the map, if you aren’t inclined to naturally know where you are. I’m glad I did, as it isn’t just a loop, there are other connecting paths you can do too. There were many bikers, but they were nice. Super fun and not in the woods at all. It is nice to have a foothills climb and not be stuck amongst trees. Two Dachshunds give eight paws up!!
